Your exact path can differ because Windows uses architecture-specific folders and different driver layouts across releases. Look below the print-spooler driver tree, not only in the root of C:WindowsSystem32.

Historical Microsoft servicing articles list versions including 0.3.9200.16384 and 0.3.7601.17514, but these are tied to particular Windows releases and packages. They are not a universal current version, and the same filename can have different versions and sizes on different Windows builds.

Microsoft’s documentation identifies separate x86 and x64 files. Do not infer the architecture from the filename or replace an x64 file with a random x86 copy. The calling process, Windows installation, and printer-driver package must be compatible.

What the error usually means

The wording may vary:

• “The program can’t start because fxsdrv.dll is missing from your computer.”
• “fxsdrv.dll was not found.”
• “Cannot find fxsdrv.dll.”
• “Error loading fxsdrv.dll.”
• “fxsdrv.dll could not be loaded.”
• “The specified module could not be found.”

These are generic Windows loader messages, not a special Microsoft error family for this particular file. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency or printer-driver package is missing, even when fxsdrv.dll itself is present.

A game or unrelated application showing the message does not automatically mean that the game legitimately requires this Windows driver. Check which process is reporting the error and whether fax or printing was involved.

Causes and symptoms

Before repairing anything

1. Identify whether fax or printing is involved

Write down when the error appears:

• When opening Windows Fax and Scan
• When selecting a fax printer
• When installing or removing a printer
• When printing from a particular program
• Immediately at Windows sign-in
• Only when launching one game or application

If the problem occurs only in one third-party application and you never use fax printing, that application may have an incorrect dependency. Do not assume that installing a replacement DLL is the right answer.

2. Check the file’s path and signature

If a copy of fxsdrv.dll exists, inspect it rather than replacing it.

1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
2. Browse to the location shown in the error or found during a search.
3. Right-click fxsdrv.dll, then select Properties.
4. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
5. Select the signature and choose Details.
6. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft Corporation.

1. Open Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Windows Update.
4. Choose Check for updates.
5. Install available updates.
6. Restart Windows, even if the update process does not immediately require it.
7. Test the fax or printer operation again.

Windows 10

1. Open Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Update & Security.
4. Select Windows Update.
5. Choose Check for updates.

Microsoft ended free Windows Update support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 systems may therefore have fewer servicing options than supported Windows editions. Microsoft’s current update guidance is available through its Windows update instructions.

If Windows Update fails, note the error code, restart, and run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. Do not move directly to a downloaded DLL.

Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

This is the most important repair sequence when fxsdrv.dll is missing, corrupted, or unloadable.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from the repaired store. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Run DISM

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
6. Enter this command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Press Enter.
2. Wait until the operation completes. Do not close the window because the percentage may pause for a while.

A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully or that no component-store corruption was detected. Restart if Windows requests it, then open an elevated Command Prompt again.

Run SFC

Enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.

Possible results include:

• Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files were not detected as corrupted.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the result remains unchanged, continue to the driver and optional-feature repairs below.

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance covers this sequence. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the Windows edition, release, and architecture; do not guess at a source path.

Restart after the repair commands, then repeat the action that produced the error.

Fix 3: Restore Windows Fax and Scan if it is available

On current Windows 11 builds, Windows Fax and Scan may be an optional feature. It is not guaranteed to appear on every edition or build.

1. Open Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select System.
4. Select Optional features.
5. Choose View features.
6. Search for fax.
7. If Windows Fax and Scan appears, select it.
8. Choose Next, then Add or Install, depending on the wording shown.
9. Restart Windows if requested.
10. Test the fax workflow again.

If the feature does not appear, that does not prove that fxsdrv.dll is malware or that the file should be downloaded. Availability varies by Windows edition and build. Microsoft’s Windows Fax and Scan guidance describes this limitation.

On Windows 10, the wording and location of optional features may differ:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Apps.
3. Select Apps & features.
4. Choose Optional features.
5. Select Add a feature.
6. Search for a fax-related feature if your edition provides one.
7. Install it, then restart.

If Windows cannot install the feature, return to DISM and SFC, check Windows Update, and verify that the Windows edition supports the feature.

Fix 4: Remove and re-add the affected fax or printer driver

Printer drivers are installed as packages through Windows’ driver store. Copying fxsdrv.dll into a folder does not recreate the driver package, registration, dependencies, or printer configuration.

First remove the affected device:

1. Open Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Devices in Windows 10.
4. Open Printers & scanners.
5. Select the fax printer or printer associated with the failure.
6. Choose Remove or Remove device.
7. Confirm the removal.
8. Restart Windows.

Then add it again:

1. Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
2. Choose Add device.
3. Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
4. If it is not found, select the option to add it manually.
5. Follow the wizard and select the matching driver supplied by Windows or the hardware manufacturer.
6. Print a test page or retry the fax operation.

For a more complete driver cleanup, use the classic print-server properties:

1. Press Windows key + R.
2. Enter:

printui.exe /s /t2

1. Press Enter.
2. Open the Drivers tab.
3. Select the affected driver.
4. Choose Remove.
5. If offered, select Remove driver and driver package.
6. Confirm, restart, and add the printer again.

Only remove a driver when you know which printer uses it. Removing a shared package can affect other configured printers.

If the problem concerns a physical fax modem or multifunction printer, check its driver in Device Manager:

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand Print queues, Printers, Modems, or Other devices.
4. Right-click the affected device.
5. Select Update driver.
6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
7. If Windows finds no suitable driver, select Uninstall device, restart, and install the matching package through Windows or the manufacturer’s official support channel.

Fix 5: Check security software quarantine

Antivirus quarantine is a possible explanation, but it is not proof of the cause.

1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
2. Select Virus & threat protection.
3. Choose Protection history.
4. Look for an entry involving fxsdrv.dll or the related printer-driver package.
5. Record the detected path and action.
6. Run a Microsoft Defender scan before restoring anything.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:

• The path is the expected Windows print-driver location.
• The file is digitally signed by Microsoft Corporation.
• The quarantine entry clearly identifies the same file.
• You have ruled out tampering or an unsafe replacement.

If the file is unsigned or located in an unrelated program folder, do not restore it. Remove the associated application or investigate it separately. After restoring a legitimate Microsoft file, run DISM and SFC and reinstall the complete printer-driver package if the error returns.

Fix 6: Repair the application that reports the error

If fax and printing work normally but one application or game reports fxsdrv.dll, the application may be incorrectly calling a Windows printer DLL or may have bundled an unsuitable copy.

Use the application’s own repair option first:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Apps.
3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
4. Select the affected application.
5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
6. Select Repair.
7. Test the application.
8. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove local application data.
9. If no repair option exists, uninstall the application.
10. Restart Windows.
11. Reinstall it from the vendor’s official installer.

If the program is old, contact its vendor and ask whether it supports the current Windows architecture. Do not place fxsdrv.dll beside the executable as a first-line fix. If the program explicitly bundles the file, reinstalling that program remains the definitive application-specific repair.

Do not register this DLL with regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing DLL.

fxsdrv.dll is a printer graphics or driver DLL, and Microsoft does not establish it as a self-registering COM component. Running a command such as:

regsvr32 fxsdrv.dll

usually produces an entry-point error or changes nothing. It does not install the fax printer driver.

If you already ran regsvr32, do not keep trying different copies or switches. Repair the Windows component and reinstall the complete driver package instead. Microsoft explains the purpose and limitations of regsvr32.

Why downloading fxsdrv.dll is unsafe

Avoid DLL download sites websites and unofficial file repositories. A loose download can contain malware, have the wrong Microsoft signature, target the wrong Windows release, use the wrong architecture, or satisfy only the visible error while leaving the damaged printer-driver package untouched.

Never copy a downloaded file into:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Do not copy it into the application’s installation directory either. This can create version conflicts and bypass Windows servicing.

Use these safe sources instead:

• Windows Update
• DISM and SFC
• Windows Optional features
• Windows’ driver store and printer-management tools
• The matching Windows installation media
• The printer, modem, or multifunction-device manufacturer’s official driver package

Check architecture before replacing a driver package

Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications in some configurations, but that does not make driver DLLs interchangeable. The print subsystem and its driver package must match the required architecture.

To check Windows’ architecture:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select System.
3. Select About.
4. Read System type.

On Windows 10, use Settings → System → About as well. If an application is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows, Windows may use compatibility components, but you should still restore the driver through Windows rather than manually selecting a 32-bit DLL.

Historical file listings may label particular files as 32-bit or x64 and show different versions and sizes. Those entries describe specific operating-system packages, not a universal download target.

If the error continues

Work through these checks in order:

1. Confirm whether the error is tied to fax or printing.
2. Check the file’s location and Microsoft digital signature.
3. Install available Windows updates.
4. Run DISM, then SFC, from an elevated Command Prompt.
5. Restart Windows.
