record.dll is a private application file associated with MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX, not a standard Windows component. If Windows reports that record.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the MusicMatch installation that needs it rather than copying a random DLL into a Windows system folder.

| Verified version or size | Not established by a surviving vendor release |
MusicMatch Jukebox was an old media-management and playback application. It was not part of Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Visual C++ runtime. The product is discontinued, so modern Windows installations may have compatibility problems even after the missing file is restored.
The exact error may vary:
- “The program can’t start because record.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The program can’t start because record.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading record.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load record.dll.”
- “Cannot find record.dll.”
These messages do not always mean the file itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that another dependency required by record.dll is missing.
Before repairing anything, identify the calling program
Do not assume every record.dll error comes from MusicMatch. The name can theoretically be used by an unrelated application. First establish which executable is failing.

Check the error dialog
Read the first line of the message carefully. Windows may identify the application in the title bar or in wording such as “MusicMatch Jukebox.exe cannot start.”
If the dialog appears when Windows starts, the original program may have been removed while a startup shortcut or scheduled task remained.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- On the right, select Find.
- Search for
record.dll. - Open the matching event and note the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
If the event identifies MusicMatch Jukebox, continue with the MusicMatch repairs below. If it names another program, repair that parent application instead. Do not place MusicMatch’s copy of the file into an unrelated program folder.
Search the old application directories
Open File Explorer and check these locations:
C:Program FilesMUSICMATCHMUSICMATCH Jukebox
C:Program Files (x86)MUSICMATCHMUSICMATCH Jukebox
You can also search the computer:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, type
record.dll. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click any result and select Open file location.
A copy in the MusicMatch directory is relevant. A copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unfamiliar application directory is not automatically trustworthy.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall MusicMatch Jukebox
This is the most likely solution because record.dll belongs to the application rather than Windows.
Try the built-in repair option
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Find MusicMatch Jukebox in the installed-program list.
- Select it.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start MusicMatch again.
Not every old MusicMatch installer exposes a repair option. If repair is unavailable, use the program’s original complete installer.
Reinstall from trusted media
Before uninstalling, back up your music files, playlists, exported library data, and any MusicMatch configuration you still need. The program’s database may not be recreated automatically.
Then:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select MusicMatch Jukebox.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer from your own archived installer, original disc, or known-good OEM recovery media.
- Install the complete application to its normal location.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program before restoring custom shortcuts or startup entries.
There is no current Microsoft package that installs record.dll. Because MusicMatch is discontinued, do not assume that a modern installer claiming to be an official release is genuine. Use installation media whose provenance you can verify, and scan it before running it.
A successful repair normally restores the DLL inside the MusicMatch application directory and allows the program to open without the missing-file message. If the same error remains, check whether the dialog names a different executable and continue with the dependency and compatibility checks below.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old application file. This is particularly possible with discontinued software whose installer and binaries are no longer regularly maintained.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
record.dllor the MusicMatch installation directory. - Expand the event and inspect the detected path.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only if all of these are true:

Please verify your device type before purchasing
- The path is the expected MusicMatch application directory.
- The file came from your known-good installer.
- You recognize the detection as a false positive or a permitted application.
- A current security scan does not identify the installer or restored file as malicious.
If you decide the file is legitimate, use the available Restore or Allow on device action and then run a scan. Microsoft explains that restored quarantined files are scanned again through Protection History.

Fix 3: Confirm that the application directory is complete
A missing-file message can result from a partial installation or manual cleanup.
Open the MusicMatch directory and check whether record.dll is present. If it is absent, reinstall the complete application. Do not copy a similarly named file from another release.
If record.dll is present but MusicMatch still fails:

- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try an older Windows version available in the list.
- Select Apply.
- Select OK.
- Start MusicMatch again.
You can also test administrator permissions:
- Right-click the MusicMatch shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
Administrator mode is a troubleshooting test, not a reason to run every application permanently with elevated rights. If it makes no difference, turn the setting off again.
Microsoft provides additional guidance for making older apps compatible with current Windows versions.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
MusicMatch is legacy software. A 32-bit application normally loads its own application DLL from its installation directory, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Do not move a 32-bit application DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are Windows-managed locations and are not interchangeable application storage. Copying files there can cause version conflicts or make Windows load the wrong architecture.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
A 64-bit Windows installation can usually run many 32-bit desktop applications through its compatibility layer, but an old program may still fail because of obsolete installers, permissions, codecs, drivers, or discontinued online services. If the original MusicMatch installer will not run, right-click it, select Properties, open Compatibility, and test an older compatibility mode.
If the installer specifically offers separate releases, use the one matching the original application. Do not treat an unverified listing that claims to be a native 64-bit record.dll as proof of what MusicMatch shipped.

- Technical Support & Usage Tips: If the device is not recognized, try restarting your computer or testing with a different disc. Requires 3V-5V (1.3A-2A) output from your computer’s USB port. Keep the external CD/DVD drive away from magnetic objects. Ensure your laptop has sufficient power—low power may cause recognition failure. Our dedicated customer service team is always available to assist with any compatibility or connectivity issues to ensure satisfied experience.
- Troubleshooting & Solutions: Common Causes of Freezing - 1. Insufficient power supply through USB; 2. Damaged or dirty disc; 3. Compatibility issues with certain software programs. [Check Your Drive: 1. Make sure the disc is clean and not scratched; 2. Try a different disc to see if the problem persists; 3. Ensure the drive's lens is clean.] --- Quick Fixes: 1. Try a different USB port - Use a USB 3.0 port (usually blue); 2. Connect directly to your computer - Avoid using USB hubs, as they may not provide enough power; 3. Restart your computer with the drive disconnected, then reconnect it; 4. Check the disc - Try a different CD/DVD to see if the issue is with the specific disc.
Fix 5: Repair dependencies only when the error identifies them
Installing every runtime package is not a reliable fix for record.dll. This file is not documented as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime component.
Only install a runtime when:
- The error names a specific runtime DLL.
- MusicMatch’s installer requests it.
- Windows Event Viewer identifies a related dependency failure.
- The original application documentation requires it.
The current Visual C++ Redistributable packages are documented by Microsoft, but they do not contain record.dll. Installing them will not recreate a deleted MusicMatch file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If record.dll is present and the error says “specified module could not be found,” reinstalling MusicMatch is still the safest first step because it restores the application’s complete dependency set. If reinstalling fails, record the exact error and the executable named in Event Viewer rather than guessing at individual DLLs.
Fix 6: Remove a stale startup reference
If you no longer use MusicMatch, the correct repair may be removing the obsolete startup entry instead of restoring the application.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for MusicMatch or an unfamiliar entry connected with the error.
- Select it.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Check the Startup folder
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
shell:startup
- Press Enter.
- Remove only the shortcut that clearly belongs to the uninstalled MusicMatch program.
If the message still appears, check Task Scheduler:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch MusicMatch or its executable.
- Disable an obsolete task only after confirming what it launches.
Do not delete unknown scheduled tasks at random. If MusicMatch is still needed, reinstall it instead of disabling its working startup components.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore may help when the problem began immediately after a cleanup program, driver installation, update, or system-image restoration.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs without changing personal files. It will not reliably recreate a third-party application file if the original installer or application data is no longer present. If the restore does not help, reinstall MusicMatch from trusted media.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only for broader corruption
record.dll does not appear to be a protected Windows system file. System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Use DISM and SFC only when you also have Windows corruption symptoms, such as damaged built-in apps, repeated system errors, or other protected Windows files failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run DISM first:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test MusicMatch again.
A successful DISM operation reports that the restore operation completed. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations or that it found and repaired corrupted files. Neither result proves that record.dll has been restored. If MusicMatch still reports the same error, repair or reinstall MusicMatch.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Update or reinstall related drivers only when identified
A driver is not the normal source of record.dll, but an old media application may interact with sound, disc, or playback hardware. Update drivers only when Device Manager shows a problem or Event Viewer identifies a driver-related failure.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and check Device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began directly after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, when available. Otherwise, obtain the driver from the computer or sound-device manufacturer, uninstall the device from Device Manager, restart, and install the known-good driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not expect a driver update to supply record.dll. If manually comparing many driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing which drivers it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it does not replace reinstalling MusicMatch.
Windows Features will not normally repair record.dll
Windows Features are for optional components such as .NET Framework features, legacy media components, and virtualization tools. They do not provide MusicMatch’s private record.dll.
To inspect them:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the listed features.
- Change a feature only when the MusicMatch installer or a separate error specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random legacy features as a substitute for reinstalling the parent application.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a damaged file, the wrong release, or the wrong architecture. Even a clean file may not fix the problem if another MusicMatch dependency is missing.
Recommended Free Tools
The safe sources are your original MusicMatch installer, original installation disc, OEM recovery media, or a verified backup of your own installation. Microsoft does not provide a record.dll package.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
The correct location is normally the application directory. System folders are not general-purpose storage for third-party DLLs. A misplaced file can create conflicts and complicate later repairs.
Do not register it with regsvr32
The .dll extension does not mean that a file must be registered. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A private application library such as record.dll should not be registered merely because an error mentions it.
Running a command such as this without vendor instructions is not a repair:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsregsvr32 record.dll
It may produce another error and does not restore missing dependencies. Use regsvr32 only when the application’s documentation specifically identifies the DLL as a COM server and gives the correct path.
Do not install unrelated runtimes automatically
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET packages are not interchangeable with MusicMatch’s application files. Install them only when a separate error or the original installer identifies a need.

If MusicMatch still will not run
At that point, the issue may be compatibility rather than a missing file. MusicMatch is discontinued, and its old installer, codecs, permissions, or online features may not function correctly on a current Windows release.
Record these details before seeking further help:
- The exact error text.
- The executable named in the error or Event Viewer.
- The full path of any existing
record.dll. - Your Windows version and system type.
- Whether MusicMatch appears in Programs and Features.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Whether repair or a complete reinstall changed the message.
If the application is no longer needed, remove it and delete its stale startup entry. If the music library is important, preserve the music files and playlists before uninstalling anything.
FAQ
Is record.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. It is associated with MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX.
Is record.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified evidence that it belongs to any of those runtimes. Installing them is not the normal solution.
Can I download record.dll separately?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. Use the complete MusicMatch installer or trusted original media so that the correct file and its dependencies are restored together.
Does Windows 11 support MusicMatch Jukebox?
Support is not guaranteed. The program is discontinued, and results depend on the installer, application release, permissions, codecs, and compatibility behavior of the Windows installation.
Should I use the System32 or SysWOW64 folder?
No. Keep the file in the MusicMatch application directory. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally uses its own application DLL in that directory.
Will SFC fix record.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while record.dll is an application file. Run SFC and DISM only when broader Windows corruption is also present.
Why does Windows say a specified module is missing when record.dll exists?
The message can refer to a dependency loaded by record.dll, not necessarily to record.dll itself. Reinstall the complete parent application and check the exact executable in Event Viewer.
Should I register record.dll?
Not unless the original application documentation specifically identifies it as a COM server. A normal private application DLL does not need regsvr32.
