If you want the Steam Machine’s built-in light bar to react to sound, GabeCubeAura is the only option in this comparison whose current project documentation lists audio sync for that hardware. SteamLED offers animations and game-linked colors, while Audio Aura visualizes audio on a Windows screen rather than controlling the integrated light bar.

Which option fits your goal?
For sound-reactive lighting on the built-in bar
GabeCubeAura is the documented match. Its Audio Sync feature maps mixed system sound to the Steam Machine light bar locally. The project says the audio is not recorded or saved, and lists ten patterns with palette and custom-color choices. Home and in-game routes can use different Audio Sync settings. These are project-documented capabilities, not independent performance findings. [C001]
For animations, fixed colors, or game-linked palettes
SteamLED is aimed at users who want to customize the light bar without relying on audio input. Its README describes eight animation motions, static color displays, custom combinations, and a Now Playing mode that changes to colors for 21 named games. Audio-reactive input is not listed in its current feature documentation. [C002]
For an audio visualizer on a PC display
Audio Aura produces spectrum waves at the edge of the screen, making it a different kind of output from either Decky plugin. Its Steam listing gives a release date of June 21, 2024 and lists Windows 10 and Windows 11. It does not document control of the Steam Machine’s integrated LED bar. [C003]

What happens to Steam’s native light-bar activity?
GabeCubeAura’s README says Steam system activity keeps its existing priority: hard system priority blocks plugin writes during startup, downloads, and repeated native LED activity. The project also explains that it requests Decky’s root flag because the Steam Machine exposes the bar through root-owned valve-leds sysfs files. Treat these as the project’s documented implementation and setup context, not a guarantee verified across every SteamOS release. [C001]
SteamLED’s README does not establish how it handles native status lighting. A community discussion raises the question of whether it interferes with download-status lighting, but the thread does not answer it. Do not assume GabeCubeAura’s documented priority behavior applies to SteamLED. [C004]

- Choose GabeCubeAura if your priority is audio-reactive output on the integrated Steam Machine bar and you are comfortable with its documented Decky and root-access context.
- Choose SteamLED if you want motion patterns, static palettes, or game-associated colors; its current README does not list audio sync.
- Choose Audio Aura if you want audio-reactive graphics on a Windows computer screen, not the Steam Machine’s built-in bar.
- If preserving native status lighting is important, use the behavior documented for the specific plugin; only GabeCubeAura’s priority handling is described in the project documentation here.
