They address different parts of the problem: one works on the game’s code, while the other recreates the environment that executes it. Recompilation is a third, related technique that translates a program for another system.
What do decompilation, emulation, and recompilation mean?
These terms describe different technical approaches, although projects may combine them. A useful starting point is to ask what the project is recreating or changing.

A port or engine recreation is another possible route: it involves implementing the game or a compatible engine for a new platform. The labels are not interchangeable, and individual projects may use terminology differently; look at what the project actually does rather than relying on its name. The Decomp Games guide explains these distinctions, but its taxonomy is a guide rather than a universal standard.
Does decompilation make a game playable on a new platform?
Not necessarily. Decompilation can produce or help reconstruct source code, but a playable version for another system may require additional work, such as recompilation, a port, or an engine recreation. Some decompilation projects focus on understanding or matching the original code and may remain incomplete or non-playable.

Even when a project runs through a new code path, it may not include the game’s art, audio, levels, or other content. Some projects provide code only and require users to supply game data. For example, Recompendium’s project FAQ describes its projects as code-only and says users must provide their own legal game copy. That is a project-specific requirement, not a rule for every decompilation or recompilation project.
How should you compare two specific projects?
The category alone does not tell you whether a project will work for your copy of a game, include the data you need, or meet your expectations. Check the project’s own documentation for these details:

- Technique: Does it emulate the original machine, reconstruct source, recompile code, or implement a compatible engine?
- Game data: Does the project include content, or must you provide files yourself? If files are required, check the stated requirements and use an authorized copy.
- Edition and platform: Which game edition and which target platforms are supported? Compatibility may vary between editions.
- Purpose and maturity: Is the goal code analysis, matching the original program, or delivering a playable version on another platform? Is the work complete enough for your intended use?
- Performance and features: What does the project specifically claim and document? Neither the label “recompilation” nor “emulation” proves that it will be faster or more accurate; the cited sources provide no universal, comparable benchmarks.
Does the method determine whether using game files is legal?
No. The technical approach and the source of the game files are separate questions. Nintendo’s support FAQ states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” This is Nintendo’s position concerning pirate copies of its games; it is not a complete legal rule for every jurisdiction, game, emulator, or reverse-engineering project. Check the applicable law where you live and the specific project’s requirements. Do not assume that a project’s code includes game content or that its file requirements settle the legal status of obtaining or using those files.
