Whether your save, levels, items, achievements or trophies carry over is decided title by title, then implemented differently on each platform. Check the game publisher’s current FAQ or manual before you buy, keep the demo save intact, and use the same platform and account unless the publisher documents a specific console-generation transfer.
Some games import an entire save or selected progression automatically; others show a first-launch confirmation; some support no transfer at all. Even when a save imports, progress earned beyond a demo’s level or story cap may be discarded, and demo achievements may not exist.

What “carry over” can mean
Players often use “carry over” to mean one thing, but a publisher may treat each part of progression separately. A demo can transfer the save’s location while excluding experience earned after a cap, or import a chapter-completion flag while leaving demo-only restrictions behind.

- Save state: your latest file, including location, story flags and inventory, may be detected by the full release.
- Ordinary progression: levels, items, currency, quests and unlocks may transfer, but only if the title’s rules include them.
- Achievements and trophies: these may be absent from the demo, unlocked automatically after import, or handled independently.
- Demo restrictions: time limits, chapter boundaries, disabled multiplayer and locked modes normally describe the trial version rather than data that can be transferred.
- Platform compatibility: a transfer may work only between identical platforms, or between two explicitly supported generations such as PS4 and PS5.
Do not infer one game’s behavior from another game by the same publisher. The official instructions for the exact title, edition and platform are authoritative.

What commonly transfers
Save data and normal progress
Square Enix states that Octopath Traveler 0 can carry demo save data into the full game when the save remains on the device and the player is signed in to the corresponding first-party account. The full version presents transfer instructions. If a full-game save already exists, that message is suppressed, so the absence of a prompt does not necessarily mean the demo file is unusable; it can mean the title expects you to resolve the existing save first.
That example illustrates the usual pattern: the publisher defines a supported source save, a destination version and a trigger for import. “Progress carries over” therefore means “the documented save can be recognized under those conditions,” not “every file on every platform will merge.”
All save slots, when the guide says so
Bandai Namco’s Echoes of Aincrad transfer guide tells players to update the main game, select Carry over, and confirms that all save slots are transferred. This is stronger than a general promise that “your progress” moves: it specifies the scope as every slot. If a guide does not make that promise, assume that slot behavior is unknown until the publisher documents it.

Automatic and prompted imports
Transfer can be automatic or require confirmation. In Square Enix’s documented flow, the Steam version automatically carries the demo save. On PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and the Microsoft Store version, a confirmation screen is used. Read every prompt before accepting it, especially if the full game has already created a new file.
What may not transfer
Experience earned after a cap
Square Enix explicitly warns that experience earned after reaching a level cap or progression limit in the demo is not stored and will not be carried into the full game. You can keep playing at the cap, but the extra experience is not a hidden balance waiting to be released after purchase. Spend or record any other progression the game allows before reaching the limit, and do not treat capped playtime as preserved advancement.
Demo-only limits and disabled features
The Dinkum FAQ describes a demo limited to one in-game month, one save slot, no multiplayer and no Creative Mode. Buying the full game removes those restrictions, but removing a restriction is not the same as transferring a feature state. The one-month boundary and disabled modes define what the demo permits; they do not establish that a multiplayer world, Creative Mode content or additional save slots can be imported.

Achievements and trophies
Achievement behavior is title-specific. Square Enix says its documented demo versions do not contain trophies or achievements. In another Square Enix title, eligible Chapter 1 achievements unlock automatically after a supported transfer. Those statements are not contradictory: they describe different games or versions. Check whether the demo can award platform achievements, whether an imported flag triggers them, and whether the full release requires a particular action after loading the transferred save.

Some demos prohibit transfer outright. An official Steam-hosted manual states: “Save data cannot be transferred from the demo version to the full version.” When a manual uses that language, do not rely on the existence of similarly named files, cloud synchronization or a shared installation directory. The restriction wins.

Platform names alone are not enough. A “PC” demo may be a Steam build or a Microsoft Store build with different save systems, and a console-generation move may work for one title but not another.

How to prepare before buying or launching the full game
- Find the exact official instructions. Search the publisher’s support site, in-game notice, FAQ or manual for the game name, demo, transfer and your platform. Confirm the edition and region if the publisher separates them.
- Finish the demo with the transfer rules in mind. Note any level, chapter, time or progression cap. If the game warns that post-cap experience is discarded, stop treating capped experience as transferable.
- Keep the demo installed and the save intact. Konami requires the demo save to be retained. Do not delete the demo or its local data until the full game has detected or imported the file.
- Use the same platform and account. Konami requires the demo and full version to be played on the same platform and with the same account. Bandai Namco likewise limits its documented transfer to the same platform.
- Update the full game first. Bandai Namco and Konami both make the latest full-game version a condition of transfer. Install available patches before starting the import process.
- Check cloud synchronization on Steam and Steam Deck. Square Enix says Steam Deck transfer uses Steam Cloud and requires Cloud Save Data for both versions. Wait for synchronization to complete, and keep a local backup when the game or device permits it.
- Launch the full game and read the first prompt. A title may import automatically, display a confirmation screen, or offer a menu item such as Carry over. Do not accept a destructive option without checking which file will be replaced.
- Resolve an existing full-game save carefully. Some titles hide the transfer message once a destination save exists. If the publisher instructs you to delete that file, understand that doing so can erase full-game progress. Back up what you can and follow the title’s exact procedure.
- Verify the result. Load the imported file and check the fields the publisher promises: slot count, story position, level, inventory and any specified achievements. A successful import does not prove that every category transferred.
Steam Deck and cloud-save failure points
Cloud is disabled for one version
If Steam Cloud is enabled for the full game but disabled for the demo, the Deck may have no synchronized demo file to retrieve. Enable Cloud Save Data for both versions before switching devices or installing the full release.
A newer empty save overwrites the expected file
Cloud systems can synchronize the most recently changed file, not the file you intended to import. Avoid launching the full game repeatedly before confirming the demo save is present, and resolve any Steam conflict dialog by checking timestamps and file locations rather than choosing blindly.

Uninstalling removes the only copy
Dinkum warns that uninstalling without cloud or local data can remove the save. Treat uninstalling the demo as a data-management action: verify a synchronized or manually preserved copy first.

When a transfer prompt does not appear
- The game has already made a full save: Square Enix says an existing full-game save suppresses its transfer message. Check the official procedure before deleting anything.
- The demo file was deleted: Reinstalling the demo may not recreate the original progress. Restore the retained save or cloud copy if one exists.
- The versions are not updated: Install the current full-game update, then retry the documented flow.
- The account or platform differs: Sign in to the account used for the demo and confirm that you are not running a different storefront build.
- The title does not support transfer: An explicit manual statement that save data cannot be transferred is definitive.
- The save is beyond the supported scope: A capped level, unsupported slot or cross-platform source may be excluded even when ordinary saves transfer.
How to read a publisher’s transfer wording
Small wording differences matter. “Progress can be carried over” may mean a save import, while “all save slots are transferred” defines a wider scope. “Same platform and account” excludes a different storefront or console. “Supported from PS4 to PS5” names a narrow exception; it does not authorize movement to PC or another console. “Achievements are not present in the demo” means there is nothing to unlock during the trial, whereas “eligible achievements unlock after transfer” describes a post-import trigger.
Look for five pieces of information in the official instructions: the source version, destination version, account requirement, transfer trigger and data exclusions. If one is missing, treat that part as unconfirmed rather than filling the gap with assumptions from another game.
Bottom line for common player questions
“Will my demo save carry over when I buy the full game?”
Maybe. It is a per-game feature. Confirm the exact title’s FAQ or manual, retain the save, and meet its platform, account and update requirements.

“Do I have to replay the demo on release?”
Not when the publisher supports your save and you complete the documented import. You may need to replay if the demo forbids transfer, the save was deleted, the platform is unsupported or the title transfers only selected data.
“Can I transfer from PS4 to PS5, Switch to Switch 2 or Steam Deck?”
Only where the game explicitly supports that route. Square Enix documents PS4-to-PS5 and Switch-to-Switch 2 exceptions for the cited title, while Steam Deck uses Steam Cloud under its stated conditions. These examples do not create a universal platform policy.
“Do demo trophies, achievements, levels and items carry over?”
Each category can have a different answer. Levels and items may be part of an imported save; capped experience may be discarded; achievements may be absent from the demo or granted after transfer. Read the title-specific list of inclusions and exclusions.
