Crunch is a deadline-driven period of unusually long work, usually before a milestone or release. It can mean occasional, documented peak work, but it becomes a workplace problem when excessive hours are recurring, expected, unpaid, or treated as normal staffing. Whether you must work those hours, receive overtime, or get recovery leave depends on your country, worker classification, contract and any collective agreement.

This guide explains how long crunch can last, how pay and time off rules work in the United States and European Union, what to document, and how unions and labor authorities can help.

What “crunch” means in game development

Crunch is not simply a busy week. It is a sustained, deadline-driven increase in working time, often tied to a content lock, certification submission, launch candidate or emergency patch. A short peak that was planned, staffed and compensated is different from a schedule that repeatedly depends on nights and weekends to meet an unrealistic date.

The distinction matters because a studio may describe extra hours as “passion,” “flexibility” or part of a salaried role. Those labels do not determine your legal rights. The relevant questions are how many hours you actually work, whether the employer required or knowingly allowed them, how you are classified, and which law applies where you work.

How many hours do game developers work during crunch?

There is no single global crunch schedule. Surveys use different countries, years and samples, so their figures should not be combined into a worldwide rate. They do show that very long weeks are a recurring feature of the industry.

Source and period Population or geography Reported finding
Polish Gamedev Workers Union, January 2024 survey Survey respondents in Poland 81% said their companies opposed crunch; 27% reported crunching in 2023; 70% worked excessive overtime; 26% expected crunch in 2024.
International Game Developers Association, 2015 release Developers who experienced crunch Nearly half worked more than 60 hours in a week, and 17% worked more than 70 hours.
International Game Developers Association, 2017 survey released in 2018 Developers who experienced crunch 14% reported working more than 70 hours during crunch.

The Polish figures describe that survey’s respondents, not every Polish studio or every country. The IGDA figures likewise describe respondents who had experienced crunch, not a normal week for all developers. A team can therefore have a formal “no-crunch” policy while individual projects still produce excessive overtime.

What a peak week can look like

Crunch often appears as a gradual extension of the day: late evenings become expected, then weekend availability is added, and finally staff are asked to remain reachable even when not at their desks. Track the total time, including mandatory meetings, build monitoring, travel between work sites and required on-call periods. A nominal eight-hour day can become much longer when unpaid availability is added around it.

Why the hours vary

Workload depends on project stage, platform certification, team size, outsourcing, production planning and whether a launch date can move. A single emergency may be manageable; repeated emergencies indicate a capacity or scheduling problem rather than an unavoidable feature of game creation. A worker quoted by Gameworkers.org put the planning issue plainly: “If there is no way to make a game in 2 years without crunch, then we need to stop trying to make games in 2 years.”

Do game developers get paid for crunch or overtime?

Extra pay is inconsistent. In an IGDA report, 37% of employee respondents said they received no additional reward for overtime. Other respondents reported perks, time off, or combinations of rewards. A promised meal, bonus or later day off is not automatically equivalent to legally required overtime pay.

United States: overtime depends on coverage and classification

For a covered, nonexempt employee, the federal Fair Labor Standards Act generally requires at least 1.5 times the employee’s regular rate for hours over 40 in a defined workweek. The U.S. Department of Labor describes that rule as applying after 40 hours for covered, nonexempt employees. It does not automatically cover every worker: exemptions, duties, salary requirements and other conditions can change the result. State and local laws may provide greater protection.

Being paid a salary does not, by itself, settle the question. Review the written classification, exemption language, job duties and how the studio records time. An employer may not avoid obligations merely by calling extra work “voluntary” if managers required it, scheduled it, or knew it was being performed. Federal law generally does not cap the number of hours an adult may work, so an extreme schedule can still be unlawful for other reasons or lawful under federal wage law while violating a state rule or contract.

The FLSA does not require paid vacation, holidays or sick leave. Those benefits come from an employer policy, contract, collective agreement or state or local law. Weekend and night premiums are generally matters of agreement rather than a federal requirement.

European Union: a rest-and-hours baseline

Directive 2003/88/EC sets minimum working-time protections that member states implement through national law. The framework includes at least 11 consecutive hours of daily rest, weekly rest, a break when the working day exceeds six hours, at least four weeks of paid annual leave, and an average working-time limit of 48 hours per seven-day period including overtime. The directive states that “the average working time for each seven-day period, including overtime, does not exceed 48 hours.”

National legislation determines how reference periods, collective agreements, on-call time, exceptions and enforcement operate. Some systems permit opt-outs or special arrangements, so the directive is a floor rather than a complete answer to an individual dispute. Check the law in the country where you work and any applicable collective agreement.

Employees, contractors and freelancers are not treated the same

Employee protections may not apply to an independent contractor, freelancer, agency worker or incorporated company providing services. Classification is based on the legal test in the relevant jurisdiction, not only the label on an invoice. Control over schedule, integration into the studio, financial independence and the practical working relationship can all matter. If the studio sets your hours like an employee but contracts you as a freelancer, obtain local advice before assuming either that you are covered or that you are not.

Can a studio make you work weekends?

Often the answer is controlled by a combination of contract, scheduling law and collective bargaining rules. A contract may permit variable schedules or weekend work, but it cannot waive statutory protections that apply to your classification. In the United States, federal law generally does not require a weekend premium and does not cap adult hours; state laws, predictive-scheduling rules, rest-day statutes and your agreement may add limits. In the European Union, required daily and weekly rest still applies through national implementation even when a weekend shift is scheduled.

Ask for the request in writing: the dates, expected hours, whether attendance is mandatory, how time will be recorded, and what pay or leave applies. A manager’s message assigning Saturday work can be important evidence if the studio later says the time was voluntary. If you cannot safely work the requested schedule because it conflicts with a protected medical, disability, family or religious right, use the formal accommodation or grievance channel rather than relying on an informal conversation.

Do you get time off after crunch?

Recovery leave may be called comp time, toil, time in lieu, a shutdown or a discretionary day. Whether it is owed, how it accrues and whether it can replace overtime pay depend on local law, your contract and the employer’s policy. Do not assume that a promised future day off cancels a statutory overtime obligation.

In the United States, federal law does not require paid vacation or compensatory leave for private-sector employees, although an agreement or state law may. In the European Union, the minimum of four weeks’ paid annual leave is a statutory baseline implemented nationally; it is distinct from an employer’s voluntary post-launch recovery day. A studio policy should state when leave is earned, whether it expires, how it is approved and what happens if a release prevents you from taking it.

Questions to ask before accepting “time off later”

  • Is the leave written into the contract, handbook or collective agreement?
  • Is it granted hour-for-hour, day-for-day or at another rate?
  • Can management cancel it, and what notice is required?
  • Does it remain available if you resign or are laid off?
  • Does taking it affect legally required overtime pay?

What rights do game workers have?

Your rights come from several layers: wage-and-hour statutes, health and safety rules, anti-discrimination and anti-retaliation laws, leave laws, your individual contract and any collective agreement. A studio policy cannot reduce a statutory minimum, but a contract or agreement can provide more generous terms.

Build a contemporaneous record

Keep records outside systems you could lose access to. Preserve the original date and time of each entry and do not alter messages after the fact.

  • Start and end times each day, including work performed from home.
  • Weekend, holiday, overnight and on-call periods.
  • Messages, tickets or meeting invitations assigning or approving extra hours.
  • Timesheets, pay statements and the classification or exemption language supplied by the employer.
  • Promises of bonuses, overtime, comp time, meals or recovery leave.
  • Requests for leave and any written denial or pressure to postpone it.
  • Names of witnesses and a factual description of retaliation, threats or discriminatory comments.

Do not secretly record conversations unless local law permits it. Keep copies of your employment documents and consult a qualified local adviser about how to preserve evidence lawfully.

Where to take a dispute

For a live wage, rest-time or retaliation dispute, contact the labor authority in your jurisdiction, a game-worker union or an employment lawyer familiar with your worker classification. Give them your location, employer type, dates, hours, pay structure and documents. Deadlines for administrative complaints and court claims can be short, and internal reporting does not always pause them.

How to compare game jobs and studios

Ask for written answers before accepting an offer. “We rarely crunch” is less useful than a policy that defines expected peak hours, approval steps and compensation.

Topic What to verify
Peak workload Expected hours near milestones, release and patches; frequency of weekend work; who can move the date.
Overtime treatment Paid overtime, banked time, bonus, or inclusion in an exempt salary; timekeeping method and approval rules.
Notice and scheduling How much notice is given, whether availability is mandatory, and how emergency changes are communicated.
Rest and leave Daily and weekly rest, vacation, sick leave, shutdowns, carryover and post-crunch recovery.
Benefits Health coverage, retirement, parental and disability benefits, and eligibility waiting periods.
Job security Notice, severance, probation, layoff language and treatment of unused leave.
Voice and protection Grievance route, anti-retaliation policy, harassment reporting and whether a union or collective agreement covers the role.

Speak with current or former workers if possible, but treat informal assurances as leads to verify against the written terms. Ask specifically how the last release was staffed, how many weekends were scheduled, and whether promised time off was actually taken.

Should you join a game-worker union?

Union membership can provide collective bargaining, representation in discipline or disputes, and a formal way to negotiate staffing, schedules, overtime and leave. It can also involve dues, organizing effort and a relationship that varies by country and bargaining unit. A union cannot guarantee that every project will avoid peak work, but a collective agreement can replace informal promises with enforceable procedures.

UNI Global Union reported a survey across 29 countries in which respondents identified low pay (66%), excessive work hours (43%), inadequate benefits (43%), and discrimination or sexual harassment (35%) as concerns. Its organizer report describes a game workforce of more than 330,000 across North America, Europe and Asia. Those figures indicate why organizing is being discussed; they do not predict the conditions at a particular studio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to evaluate a union or organizing drive

  • Ask which workers and locations the bargaining unit would cover.
  • Read the proposed priorities: overtime, scheduling notice, rest, layoffs, harassment procedures and pay scales.
  • Understand dues, voting rights, strike rules and how representatives are chosen.
  • Check whether local law protects organizing and what conduct may be considered retaliation.
  • Keep discussions confidential where lawful and seek advice from an established labor organization or employment adviser.

A practical plan when crunch starts

  1. Clarify the order. Ask whether the extra hours are mandatory, the end date, and the approval chain.
  2. Confirm the rules. Locate your classification, overtime policy, time-off policy and any collective agreement.
  3. Track every hour. Record ordinary work, weekends, required availability and breaks accurately.
  4. Request a safe schedule. Raise minimum-rest, health, disability, caregiving or religious needs in writing through the proper channel.
  5. Get compensation promises in writing. Specify the rate, bonus formula or leave calculation and when it will be delivered.
  6. Escalate carefully. Use HR, a worker representative, labor authority or qualified lawyer when the studio refuses to record time, withholds pay, denies statutory rest or retaliates.
  7. Protect your health. Sleep, breaks and medical care are not performance failures. Seek professional help if exhaustion creates an immediate safety risk.
