On Nintendo Switch 2, both formats are physical cards, but they do not hold the same thing. A standard game card can be started after you insert it; a Game-Key Card is a key for downloading the full game. That download needs internet access and storage, and the Game-Key Card must remain inserted to play.
What is the difference between a game card and a Game-Key Card?
Nintendo calls the physical media “game cards,” though players may call them cartridges. A standard Switch 2 game card can be started after insertion. A Game-Key Card does not contain the full game data: it is a physical key that lets the console download the game. Nintendo describes it this way: “Game-key cards are different from regular game cards, because they don’t contain the full game data.” Nintendo’s Game-Key Card guidance explains the format and how to use it.

| What to consider | Standard Switch 2 game card | Game-Key Card |
|---|---|---|
| What the card contains | Nintendo says the game can be started after insertion. | A key; the full game data must be downloaded. |
| Internet before starting | Nintendo’s cited instructions say the game can be started after insertion. | Internet is required for the initial download and first launch. |
| Internet for later play | Nintendo’s cited guidance does not specify every title’s online features. | Nintendo says the downloaded game can be started offline afterward. |
| Storage | The cited guidance states no download requirement for a standard card. | Enough system memory or microSD Express storage is required; the packaging indicates the space needed. |
| Card required to play | Use the physical card and follow the title’s instructions. | Yes. The Game-Key Card must be inserted to start the downloaded game. |
What happens when you use a Game-Key Card?
- Check the game’s packaging to confirm it is a Game-Key Card and see how much free space the download needs.
- Insert the card into the Switch 2 and connect the console to the internet to download the game. The download can use system memory or a microSD Express card.
- After downloading, keep the Game-Key Card inserted to start the game. Nintendo says an internet connection is needed for the first launch, but the downloaded game can be started offline afterward.
If you have enough free system memory, you do not automatically need a separate storage card. If you do not, the game’s packaging gives the required free space so you can decide whether to free up storage or use a compatible microSD Express card.
Can you use a Game-Key Card on another Switch 2?
Nintendo says to insert the Game-Key Card into the other Switch 2 and follow the download steps on that console. That establishes that the card can be used on another console through its download process; it does not, by itself, establish broader rules for resale, lending, or long-term redownload access.

Why did Nintendo introduce Game-Key Cards?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa gave the company’s stated rationale in its 2025 annual-meeting Q&A: “This is one of the new software distribution methods we have introduced to accommodate the larger game data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch.” This explains Nintendo’s reason for offering the format; it does not mean every Switch 2 physical release uses a Game-Key Card or that one is technically necessary for any particular game. Nintendo’s 85th Annual General Meeting Q&A Summary contains the full response.

Check the specific game’s box. Nintendo says packaging identifies Game-Key Cards, so do not assume every physical Switch 2 release uses the same format. Nintendo’s game-card instructions distinguish standard game cards from Game-Key Cards.
