Translation converts a game’s words from one language to another. Localization includes translation but also adapts the entire player-facing experience for a specific locale: culture, character voice, interface, scripts, audio, visuals, legal requirements, and in-game usability.
That distinction matters because a sentence can be grammatically accurate and still break a joke, exceed a button’s width, lose a character’s personality, or make a quest impossible to understand. A translation-only workflow can be enough for a small, context-independent text set. A story-driven, voice-heavy or technically complex game usually needs full localization and testing inside the game.

Translation and localization are related, but they are not the same job
Translation is the language-conversion step: a translator renders source-language text in a target language while preserving its meaning as accurately as possible. It can work well for a short document whose purpose and context are obvious.

In a game, the “product” is not just a script. It is a playable system made of dialogue, menus, tutorials, quests, item descriptions, subtitles, animations, images, sound, controls, store pages and rules. Localization therefore treats language, design and implementation as connected parts of one player experience.
| Question | Translation | Localization |
|---|---|---|
| Primary task | Convert source text into another language. | Adapt the game and its content for a defined locale. |
| Typical material | Text strings, documents or a script. | Text plus UI, fonts, layout, audio, video, images, metadata and support materials. |
| Cultural work | Preserve the source meaning, with limited adaptation. | Rework humor, idioms, references, symbolism, taboos and character voice when a direct equivalent would fail. |
| Technical work | Usually outside the translator’s control. | Handles text expansion, encoding, writing direction, subtitle timing, asset integration and in-game behavior. |
| Testing | Proofreading or linguistic review of the text. | Linguistic review plus functional and visual checks in the running game. |
Localization does not necessarily mean changing the language label. A product can be localized from US English to UK English even though both use English: spelling, terminology, dates, punctuation, measurement conventions and cultural references may need adjustment.
What game localization changes
The exact scope depends on the game, target market and release plan. A complete localization brief should identify every player-facing asset, not only dialogue.
Dialogue, narrative and written content
- Character dialogue, barks, cinematics and branching choices.
- Menus, tutorials, tooltips, quest objectives, item names, descriptions and combat feedback.
- Achievement and trophy text, error messages, accessibility labels, update notes and customer-support material.
- Digital-store descriptions, packaging, trailers, community announcements and other marketing copy when those materials are released in the locale.
Translators need context for each line. A string such as “Charge,” “Light,” “Save” or “Cover” can have several valid meanings. A spreadsheet without a screenshot, speaker, character limit or scene description forces the translator to guess, and those guesses often become expensive rework after integration.
Humor, idioms and cultural references
Wordplay rarely survives a literal substitution. A pun may need a new pun, a different line, or a change in when the joke appears. An idiom may need an expression that creates the same implication rather than the same words. References to food, politics, religion, history, gestures or popular culture can require explanation, replacement or removal for a particular audience.
The goal is not to erase the source culture. It is to preserve the intended effect: whether a line should sound sarcastic, formal, threatening, awkward, affectionate or absurd. A culturally accurate adaptation can therefore be quite different from the source wording while remaining faithful to the scene.
Character identity and gender
Character voice is part of gameplay. Translators may need to preserve age, education, social status, regional flavor, aggression, politeness and recurring verbal habits. Languages also mark gender, number, formality or pronouns differently. A choice that is neutral in the source language may require a gendered form in the target language, or a target language may make a character’s relationship or identity more explicit than the original.
A localization team should maintain a terminology database and character guide so that names, titles, pronouns and recurring phrases remain consistent across scenes and updates.

Interface, typography and text behavior
Translated text can be longer or shorter than the source. If a button, HUD label, subtitle box or inventory panel is sized only for the source language, the result may be clipped, wrapped into an unreadable shape or overlap another element.
Localization may require:
- Resizable panels and flexible line wrapping rather than hard-coded text positions.
- Fonts that contain every required character, including accented letters, uncommon symbols and complex scripts.
- Correct Unicode handling, text rendering and input support.
- Right-to-left layout for languages that require it, including mirrored navigation, alignment and icons where appropriate.
- Rules for capitalization, punctuation, quotation marks, line breaks and keyboard conventions.
- Text expansion allowances in menus, subtitles, notifications and controller prompts.
Images and icons can carry meaning too. A hand gesture, color, animal, clothing detail or symbol that is harmless in one market may be confusing or offensive in another. Video, packaging and promotional art may therefore need localized versions, not just translated captions.
Dates, numbers, currencies and measurements
Locale adaptation covers formats that players read as factual data: dates, times, decimal separators, thousands separators, currencies, prices, units of distance and temperature, address formats and region-specific terminology. “03/04” is ambiguous across markets; a game that displays a deadline or event date must use an unambiguous, locale-appropriate format.

Replacing spoken audio is a production process. It can involve casting, auditions, script adaptation, performance direction, studio recording, editing, mixing, subtitle creation, file delivery and integration. Target-language lines may run longer or shorter than the source, so the team may need to adjust wording, pauses or playback rules to fit the available duration.
Where facial animation is synchronized to the source language, localization may also require lip-sync decisions. Some projects use timing-friendly rewrites; others accept a looser match or create additional facial data. The appropriate choice depends on the game’s camera style, performance goals and budget.
Legal, ratings and market requirements
Some releases need region-specific legal notices, privacy wording, age-rating submissions, content edits or restrictions. These requirements vary by market and product, so they should be identified during planning rather than discovered at the end of certification.
Why a literal translation can fail in a game
A literal rendering can be linguistically defensible and still be wrong for play. The most common failures connect a sentence to the context that translation alone cannot see.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe translator cannot tell what the line means
Without a build, video, screenshot or speaker information, a translator may not know whether “fire” is a noun, a command, a status effect or a metaphor. The same source string may appear in several scenes with different meanings. Context notes and unique string identifiers prevent contradictory choices.

The text does not fit the interaction
A translation that reads naturally in a document may be too long for a button, radial menu, inventory slot or notification. A subtitle may exceed its display window, or a tutorial may wrap so that the action word is hidden. Localization requires reviewing the rendered result, not just approving a text file.
The joke, idiom or reference has no equivalent
Literal wordplay can become nonsense. A replacement joke may need a different setup, a new punchline or a different placement in the scene. The adaptation should preserve the player’s reaction and the character’s intent, not the source sentence’s individual words.
The register changes the character
A formal target-language pronoun can make a rebellious teenager sound like a bureaucrat; an overly casual choice can weaken a monarch’s authority. Consistent voice decisions are especially important in branching dialogue, where the same character may appear across hundreds of lines.

The image and words disagree
A phrase can be harmless in isolation but carry a different meaning beside an icon, gesture or color. Review must consider the complete screen and sequence, including art, animation, audio and player instructions.
Does localization change the story?
It can change the wording, timing and presentation of a story while preserving its narrative function. A pun may become a different pun, a cultural reference may be replaced, and a line may be shortened to fit a subtitle or animation. Those are changes to expression, not necessarily to plot.
Localization can affect story meaning when a term encodes a relationship, honorific, gender, social hierarchy or historical reference that the target language handles differently. The team should document such decisions and involve the narrative and development leads when a choice could alter a quest condition, character motivation, item effect or branching outcome.
Names, invented terminology and lore terms need a deliberate policy. Some are transliterated, some translated and some retained. Inconsistent treatment can make a clue, collectible set or achievement impossible to recognize, so the glossary should be approved before large-scale production.
How a professional game-localization workflow works
Localization is most reliable when it begins before the source text is considered “finished.” Late extraction, missing context and unplanned code changes create rework for every language.

1. Internationalize the game and prepare the source
Internationalization is the engineering preparation that makes later localization possible. The development team should identify all localizable assets, separate text from code, avoid hard-coded strings, support variable lengths and scripts, and design UI components that can resize or reflow.
Source preparation also includes stable string IDs, a glossary, style guidance, character biographies, screenshots or walkthroughs, audio references, maximum lengths and notes about where each line appears. Microsoft Learn recommends giving the localization team character biographies, walkthroughs, style guides and game builds because these materials answer questions that isolated strings cannot.
2. Define the locale and scope
Decide which language-region combinations are supported and what each includes: text only, subtitles, full voice, interface, store copy, support content, packaging and marketing. “Spanish” or “English” alone may be too broad a specification when regional vocabulary, spelling, currency or legal text differs.

3. Translate and culturally adapt the content
Translators work from the approved source, glossary and context. Editors or reviewers check grammar, terminology, tone, consistency and cultural fit. Queries should be answered by someone who understands the game, because a linguistically elegant choice can still conflict with a mechanic or future plot reveal.
4. Record or adapt audio and video
For voiced releases, the team casts performers, prepares an adapted script, directs sessions, records and edits files, then prepares subtitles and timing data. Audio naming, sample rates, channel formats and event hooks must match the game’s implementation requirements.
5. Integrate the localized assets
Engineers import text, fonts, audio, images and video into the target-language build. They verify fallback behavior, memory and package size, controller prompts, save data, downloadable content and update pipelines. Integration should happen early enough that layout and playback problems can be fixed before the final certification build.
6. Perform linguistic and functional localization QA
Linguistic review checks meaning, spelling, terminology, tone and consistency in context. Functional QA checks the actual game for truncation, overlap, missing glyphs, incorrect line breaks, subtitle timing, audio triggers, untranslated strings, broken right-to-left behavior, wrong formats and crashes caused by localized assets.

7. Reconcile changes and certify the release
Source scripts change during development. A controlled process identifies new, modified and deleted strings, preserves approved translations where possible and reopens affected scenes for review. Final checks cover achievements, store metadata, legal text, accessibility features, downloadable content and post-launch update procedures.

| Area | What can go wrong | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| String length | Labels clip, overlap or become unreadable. | Flexible layout, tested maximum lengths and screenshots from every language. |
| Fonts and encoding | Boxes, missing glyphs or corrupted characters appear. | Unicode-safe pipelines and fonts licensed and tested for every script. |
| Right-to-left languages | Text direction, menus or navigation remain visually backward. | RTL-aware layout, mirroring rules and language-specific QA. |
| Subtitles | Lines exceed timing windows or cover important UI. | Readable line lengths, timing review and checks against cinematics and gameplay. |
| Audio | Events trigger the wrong file, lines are cut off or performances do not fit animation. | Consistent asset naming, duration checks, integration tests and, where needed, timing-friendly rewrites. |
| Formats | Dates, prices, numbers or measurements confuse players. | Locale-aware formatting rules tested with realistic values. |
| Context | Identical source strings receive contradictory translations. | Unique IDs, screenshots, speaker metadata, glossaries and developer answers. |
| Updates | New patches ship with untranslated or inconsistent content. | String-diff tracking, translation memory, release gates and a defined post-launch process. |
How to decide between translation-only and full localization
A translation-only proposal can be reasonable when the scope is small, context is stable and the player experience does not depend heavily on audio, humor or complex UI. Examples might include a short support document, a legally reviewed notice or a clearly labeled set of static strings that has already been engineered for expansion.
Full localization is the safer choice when the game relies on story, character performance, jokes, branching dialogue, subtitles, cinematic presentation, market-specific visuals or platform certification. The right choice is determined by risk and scope, not by the number of words alone.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Evidence of a capable workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Linguistic accuracy | Are meaning, grammar, terminology and recurring names correct? | Qualified translators, editors, a maintained glossary and documented review. |
| Cultural and creative fit | Do humor, idioms, references, tone and character identity work for the locale? | Native cultural reviewers, adaptation notes and a clear escalation path for sensitive content. |
| Functional and technical fit | Does every string fit, render and trigger correctly on each platform? | Build access, screenshots or video, engineering support and in-game localization QA. |
| Experience and release readiness | Does the localized version remain immersive, accessible and compliant? | Per-language test coverage, audio and subtitle checks, rating or legal coordination and a patch process. |
Ask any provider to state exactly what is included. “Localization” may mean translated text only in one proposal and text, voice, integration and QA in another. Confirm the language-region variants, asset types, review stages, build access, bug-fix policy, update handling and ownership of terminology decisions.
Cost and schedule: why there is no universal number
Authoritative guidance does not establish a broadly applicable price, duration or quality percentage for game localization. Project figures vary with the number of locales, word count, asset volume, voice scope, platform count, engineering condition, review depth and development schedule.
Voice recording, lip-sync, recreated images, right-to-left engineering and extensive in-game QA add work beyond translating a text export. Early internationalization and complete source documentation can reduce rework, while late script changes and missing context increase it. A credible estimate should therefore be based on an inventory of strings and assets plus the required workflow, not on a universal per-word assumption.
A practical pre-release checklist
- List every player-facing text, audio, video, image, store and support asset.
- Define each target locale, including regional spelling, currency, date and measurement rules.
- Separate localizable content from code and assign stable string identifiers.
- Provide builds, screenshots, walkthroughs, character biographies, style guidance and a glossary.
- Test flexible UI, text expansion, fonts, Unicode handling and right-to-left behavior where required.
- Decide whether each locale receives text, subtitles, partial voice or full voice.
- Plan casting, recording, subtitle timing, file naming and lip-sync expectations before sessions begin.
- Review jokes, idioms, cultural references, symbolism, gendered language and sensitive content with native specialists.
- Run linguistic review and functional QA in every target-language build.
- Track source changes and leave time to fix integration, certification, rating and legal issues.
- Include localized downloadable content, achievements, accessibility labels, store metadata and post-launch updates in the release plan.
The bottom line
Translation changes the language of a game’s words. Localization makes the game work for people in a particular locale. It may involve rewriting a joke, resizing a menu, selecting a font, changing a date format, recording new performances, adapting an image or satisfying a regional requirement. If the game depends on narrative, character voice, audiovisual presentation or interactive UI, treating localization as a translation-only task leaves the most visible parts of the player experience untested.
Microsoft Learn’s description that video-game localization requires knowledge of development, storytelling and interactive elements captures the practical difference: translators work on language, while localization teams make that language function inside the game.
