Game Pass Games Not Launching on PC? A Step-by-Step Fix for Xbox App and Gaming Services

If Game Pass games will not launch on your Windows PC, start with software and account checks—not a new controller or other accessory. The usual first-line path is to check Xbox service status, confirm the correct Microsoft account, update Windows and Microsoft Store, repair or reset the Xbox app and game, run the official Gaming Services Repair Tool, and reinstall only if those steps fail. Work through the sequence in order so you do not delete local data or redownload a large game unnecessarily.

Identify the failure before changing anything

Write down exactly what happens when you select Play. Does the Xbox app open and then close, does a game show “Launching” indefinitely, does a separate window appear and disappear, or do you receive an error code? Also note whether the problem affects one title or every Game Pass title.

  • One game fails: the title’s local app data, installation, update, or entitlement is the more likely scope.
  • Every game fails: examine account sign-in, Gaming Services, the Microsoft Store, Windows updates, and service status first.
  • The library is empty or subscription prompts appear: verify that the Xbox app and Store use the Microsoft account that owns the subscription and game entitlement.
  • Several users or games fail at once: check Xbox service status before changing local files; an outage cannot be repaired from your PC.

Keep the exact error code and the steps you try. That record gives Microsoft or Xbox support useful information if escalation is necessary.

1. Check Xbox service status and the size of the problem

Open the official Xbox service-status page and look for incidents affecting sign-in, gaming, cloud services, or PC Game Pass. If the status page reports an incident that matches your symptom, wait for service recovery and test again rather than resetting apps or deleting installations. Service status is especially important when multiple games stop working simultaneously, your library disappears, or authentication fails.

If no incident is listed, test one known-good installed Game Pass title. A single-title failure points toward that game; a system-wide failure justifies continuing through the Windows and Gaming Services steps below. Microsoft does not publish a reliable percentage showing how often outages, Store corruption, or Gaming Services are responsible, so do not assume one cause from the symptom alone.

2. Close the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, then sign in again

Exit the Xbox app and Microsoft Store completely, reopen both, and sign in with the account that owns the subscription and the game entitlement. A browser or Windows account can be signed in successfully while one of these apps is using a different Microsoft account.

  1. Close the Xbox app window.
  2. Close the Microsoft Store window.
  3. Open Microsoft Store and confirm the profile icon shows the intended account.
  4. Open the Xbox app and confirm it uses that same account.
  5. Try launching one installed title.

If the game is missing from your library or appears as unavailable, resolve the account or subscription state before reinstalling. Reinstalling under the wrong account will not restore an entitlement.

3. Install Windows and Microsoft Store updates

Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance for Microsoft Store apps puts updates before repair and reset. Install all pending Windows updates, restart when Windows requests it, and then update Store apps.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart the PC if prompted.
  3. Open Microsoft Store > Library.
  4. Select Get updates. Install updates for Microsoft Store, Xbox, Gaming Services, and the affected game when they are offered.
  5. Reopen the Xbox app and test the same title.

Do not skip a restart after a major Windows or Gaming Services update. Components can remain in an old state until Windows reloads them.

4. Repair the Xbox app and the affected game

Windows provides a non-destructive Repair action for installed apps. It is the safer recovery choice because it attempts to correct the app without deliberately clearing its local data.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Xbox, select the three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, and open Xbox again.
  4. If one title still fails, return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open that game’s Advanced options, and select Repair there as well.
  5. Restart Windows and test the game.

Repair may take only a moment and normally leaves your sign-in and local app data intact. If the game has no Advanced options page, continue with the Xbox app and Gaming Services checks instead of forcing a different fix.

5. Reset the Xbox app or game when Repair does not work

If the issue continues, Microsoft’s procedure says to select Reset. Reset is more disruptive than Repair: it can clear local app data and may require you to sign in again. It is still less costly than removing and downloading a large game.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Open Advanced options for the Xbox app.
  3. Select Reset and confirm.
  4. Open Xbox, sign in again if requested, and test the title.
  5. For a one-game failure, repeat the process for the affected game only.

Use Reset on the narrowest affected component first. Resetting every app at once removes useful evidence and can create additional sign-in work.

6. Run the official Gaming Services Repair Tool

Gaming Services is a Windows component used by Xbox and Game Pass titles. When it is missing, corrupted, or repeatedly blocks launch, use Xbox’s official Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC. It is the supported targeted remedy for this component.

  1. Open the Xbox app and locate the Gaming Services repair option, or download the official Gaming Services Repair Tool from Xbox support.
  2. Run the tool and follow its prompts to diagnose and repair Gaming Services.
  3. Allow it to complete; do not close the window while it is working.
  4. Restart Windows after the repair.
  5. Open Microsoft Store and Xbox, verify the intended account, and test one known-good Game Pass title.

If the tool reports that it cannot complete, record its message or code. Avoid deleting system folders or using unofficial scripts as a substitute; those actions can make Store and Xbox registration harder to repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Confirm the installation and entitlement before reinstalling

Before removing a game, check that the account, subscription, and installation location are correct. In the Xbox app, open the game’s page and confirm that it is installed on the drive you expect and that the app recognizes your entitlement. A title that is still updating, paused, or installed on a disconnected drive can appear to launch and then stop.

  • Make sure the drive containing the game is connected and visible in Windows.
  • Check that the Xbox app is not waiting for an update or an account sign-in.
  • Verify that the subscription or purchase providing access is active on the signed-in account.
  • Keep enough free storage for an update or repair operation.

These checks are especially important after Reset, because the app may need to rebuild its library view or ask for authentication again.

8. Reinstall only after the recovery steps

Microsoft lists reinstalling the app as a later step, after updates, troubleshooting, and repair or reset. Reinstallation is the most time- and bandwidth-intensive option, particularly for a large game, so reserve it for a confirmed local installation problem.

  1. Confirm Xbox service status is normal and the correct account is signed in.
  2. Confirm the game’s storage drive is available and you have enough free space.
  3. Uninstall the Xbox app or the affected game from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, depending on what failed.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall the Xbox app from Microsoft Store, or reinstall the affected game from the Xbox app.
  6. Let installation and all updates finish before launching.

If every Game Pass title fails, reinstalling one game first is usually a poor diagnostic choice; repair Gaming Services and the Xbox app instead. If only one title fails after all other titles work, reinstalling that title is a more proportionate test.

Choose the least destructive option that matches the evidence

Option Best scope Risk to local data Time and bandwidth Use it when
Check service status Multiple games, sign-in, or missing library None Minutes An outage may be affecting users broadly
Close, reopen, and sign in Account or session symptoms None Minutes The app may be using the wrong account or stale session
Windows and Store updates All app and component failures Low Depends on update size Updates are pending or components are out of date
Repair Xbox app or one game Low Usually short You want a non-destructive app correction
Reset Xbox app or one game Local app data may be cleared Short, plus sign-in Repair did not resolve the launch failure
Gaming Services Repair Tool Repeated or system-wide launch blocks Component-level changes Short, then restart Gaming Services is missing, corrupt, or implicated
Reinstall A confirmed app or game installation problem Highest; remove local installation Highest; redownload required Earlier recovery steps failed

Match common symptoms to the next step

The Xbox app says “Launching” and then closes

First check service status and the account, then update Windows and Microsoft Store. Repair the Xbox app and the affected game in Advanced options. If the behavior remains, run the Gaming Services Repair Tool, restart, and test again.

Every Game Pass game refuses to open

Treat this as a component, account, or service-scope problem rather than a single damaged game. Check for an Xbox incident, verify both app accounts, install updates, repair or reset Xbox, and run the Gaming Services Repair Tool before downloading anything again.

Only one game fails while others work

Repair that game, check its installation drive and pending updates, and confirm the account still has the entitlement. Reset the game if Repair fails. Reinstall that title only after those checks.

The library is empty or games show a purchase prompt

Stop troubleshooting files and verify the Microsoft account in both Microsoft Store and Xbox. A subscription or entitlement mismatch cannot be fixed by Repair, Reset, or a new accessory.

Windows 10 and unsupported recovery assumptions

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. If you are troubleshooting on Windows 10, the absence of current supported updates can limit the fixes available to Xbox and Store components. Check your Windows edition and update status before assuming that a Windows 11 procedure will behave identically.

A controller, headset, cable, or other physical accessory is not a supported fix for an Xbox app, Store, Gaming Services, update, or entitlement failure. Use hardware troubleshooting only when the game launches successfully but input or audio is the separate problem.

When to contact Microsoft or Xbox support

Escalate after service status is normal and the ordered local steps have failed. Provide the exact error code, Windows version, whether one or every game is affected, the account and subscription symptoms, and the actions already completed. Mention whether Repair, Reset, the Gaming Services Repair Tool, and reinstalling changed the behavior.

Microsoft documents Reset this PC as a last-resort Windows recovery option when normal repair fails. It is a major operating-system recovery step, not a routine Game Pass fix. Back up important files and use it only after support guidance or after you have exhausted the supported app-level remedies.
