PlayStation Plus Extra is the stronger fit for a PS4 or PS5 owner who wants a large downloadable back catalog, while PlayStation Plus Premium is worth the step up when classics, timed trials or PS5 cloud streaming matter.
There is no permanent winner. Both libraries rotate, and inclusion depends on your country, tier, platform and the date you check. If one particular horror game is the reason you are subscribing, verify that title and its required tier immediately before paying.

Rotating, filtered catalogs
Game Pass and PlayStation Plus are curated subscription libraries. You receive access while your membership is active and while a game remains included. Xbox explicitly warns that the number of games, titles, features and availability can change over time. PlayStation Plus catalogs also change by region, tier and platform. A search result is therefore not enough: open the game’s detail page and read the membership label, supported platform and any leaving-soon notice.

Why a horror count would be misleading
Neither service publishes a stable, complete count of horror games. Genre tags are inconsistent: a psychological thriller may be filed under action, an episodic adventure may not carry a horror label, and a classic may be listed separately from its modern remake. The practical question is whether the games you want are available on your hardware and tier today, not which service claims a larger horror number.
What Game Pass offers a horror player
A concrete current example: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Xbox Wire describes Resident Evil 7: Biohazard as first-person survival horror set in rural America, emphasizing tense exploration, a frightening atmosphere and close-range encounters. The announcement lists it for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass on cloud, console and PC. That makes it a useful example of the service’s appeal: a major, atmospheric horror game can be installed or streamed without a separate game purchase, provided your account, market and chosen plan show the same entitlement.
Ultimate’s hardware coverage
Game Pass Ultimate is the relevant tier for a player who wants one subscription across Xbox console and PC. Xbox says Ultimate includes hundreds of games on Xbox and PC, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming and major day-one releases. A horror fan can begin on a console, continue on a PC and use cloud gaming where the game and service support it. Your save synchronization, controller support and performance still depend on the individual title and device.

PC-only access
PC Game Pass is the less expensive route for someone who plays only on Windows PC. Xbox Wire reported a US price of $13.99 per month after the April 21, 2026 update. It gives you the PC catalog, but it is not the same purchase as Ultimate: do not assume that console multiplayer or every Ultimate cloud benefit is included.

What PlayStation Plus offers a horror player
Essential: the baseline
PlayStation Plus Essential includes monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. It does not provide the full Game Catalog. For a horror player, Essential makes sense when you mainly need online access and are happy to buy or redeem individual games, or when a monthly game happens to match your taste.
Extra: the catalog-focused choice
Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics to Essential’s benefits. Sony describes the Game Catalog as containing hundreds of games. This is the natural PlayStation tier for exploring several spooky games on PS4 or PS5 without purchasing each one. The catalog is downloadable, so your storage capacity, download time and console space matter more than they do with a streaming-first approach.
Premium: classics, trials and streaming
Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, PS5 cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog. Trials can answer an important horror question quickly: does the atmosphere, camera or combat suit you before you commit to a long download or purchase? Classics expand the range beyond current PS4 and PS5 releases, although the available selection varies by country.
US PlayStation Plus prices
| Tier | Monthly price | Annual price | Relevant features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $79.99 | Monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. |
| Extra | $16.99 | $134.99 | Essential benefits plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. |
| Premium | $19.99 | $159.99 | Extra benefits plus Classics Catalog, game trials, PS5 cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog. |
Sony’s figures are current US prices shown on its official plan information. Other countries may use different tiers, currencies, taxes or promotions. Sony also says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026, so do not treat Extra or Premium as a guarantee of a steady stream of new PS4 horror games.

Choose by your hardware and play style
You own an Xbox and a gaming PC
Start with Game Pass Ultimate if you want one library across both devices, day-one access and the option to stream. It is especially useful for horror games because you can sample a demanding title through the cloud before deciding whether to install it. If you never use an Xbox, never stream and only need PC games, compare your expected play time against the $13.99 monthly PC price instead.

You own a PS5 and download most games
PlayStation Plus Extra is the practical first tier. It supplies the Game Catalog without charging Premium’s annual price, and downloading avoids dependence on streaming quality. Move to Premium only when you will actually use classics, trials or PS5 cloud streaming; paying for those features does not make the ordinary Game Catalog permanent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You own a PS4
Check every game’s platform label. Extra and Premium can include PS4 titles, but Sony’s statement that PS4 additions will be intermittent from January 2026 means the flow of new PS4 games is not predictable. A specific older horror game may be available in the catalog, a monthly game or neither, depending on the current listing.
You want to stream rather than install
Compare the two services in your market, not just the headline tier. Game Pass Ultimate includes cloud gaming, and PlayStation Plus Premium includes PS5 cloud streaming. Streaming requires a compatible device, a supported game and a connection capable of maintaining stable video and input latency. A horror game that relies on precise timing or fast camera movement can feel worse over an unstable connection than after installation.
You mainly play online with friends
On Xbox, Ultimate includes online console multiplayer. On PlayStation, Essential is the baseline plan that includes online multiplayer, and Extra or Premium add catalog features above it. If multiplayer access is your primary reason for subscribing, price the baseline tier separately from the catalog tier you might add for solo horror games.
Cloud limits and the November 2026 Xbox change
Cloud policies are not fixed. Xbox announced monthly cloud-hour allocations scheduled to begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium and 5 hours for Essential, with market-specific variation. These are planned allowances, not a universal promise that every country will receive identical limits on the same date. Check the live plan terms when the change reaches your account.

The Xbox tier names in that announcement should not be confused with PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium. They are separate services with separate entitlements. A PlayStation Premium subscription does not grant Xbox cloud hours, and an Xbox Premium or Essential allocation does not describe PlayStation streaming.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check whether a spooky game is included
Before choosing Game Pass
- Open the official Xbox Game Pass catalog while signed into the account and country you will use.
- Search the exact game title, including the edition or remake name.
- Filter or inspect the result for Xbox console, PC and cloud availability separately.
- Read the plan badge. Confirm whether the listing requires Ultimate, PC Game Pass or another tier.
- Look for an expiration or leaving-soon notice and note whether your save data will remain usable if you later buy the game.
- Check the store listing for age rating, language, accessibility options and download size before starting.
Before choosing PlayStation Plus
- Open the PlayStation Plus area on your PS5, PS4 or the official PlayStation account page.
- Search the Game Catalog first, then the Classics Catalog if you are considering Premium.
- Open the game page and verify the PS4 or PS5 label, required tier and whether the item is a full game, classic version or trial.
- Confirm that the listing appears for your country; another region’s catalog screenshot is not proof of access.
- Check the removal date or catalog notice and leave enough storage for a download if you are not streaming.
- For a Premium trial, read the trial duration and restrictions before treating it as full-game access.
Common mistakes that make a subscription disappointing
Assuming a famous horror series is permanently included
A franchise appearing in a catalog announcement does not guarantee that every entry, remake or downloadable expansion is included. Search the exact title and edition. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, for example, is a documented Game Pass listing, but that does not establish access to every other Resident Evil game.
Comparing annual PlayStation prices with monthly Xbox prices as if they were equivalent
Sony publishes US annual prices of $79.99 for Essential, $134.99 for Extra and $159.99 for Premium. The cited Xbox figures are monthly US prices of $22.99 for Ultimate and $13.99 for PC Game Pass. They represent different billing periods and benefit sets; calculate your own expected months of use and include the possibility of a price change.
Ignoring platform editions
A console listing may not include the PC build, and a cloud listing may not mean local installation is available. Confirm each platform separately, especially when you move between Xbox console, Windows PC, PS4 and PS5.

Choosing Premium for a feature you will not use
Premium’s additional value is concentrated in classics, trials and PS5 cloud streaming. If your plan is simply to download current catalog games on a PS5, Extra may cover that use case at a lower annual price.
A practical horror-discovery routine
- Define your hardware. Write down the consoles and PC you will actually use; this immediately removes incompatible listings.
- Make a short list. Include three to five specific games and identify whether you prefer survival horror, psychological horror, action horror or horror adventures.
- Check the live catalog. Verify each title, edition, tier and region instead of relying on genre pages.
- Decide whether streaming is essential. If yes, confirm cloud support and your market’s current allowance before selecting a tier.
- Use trials or one-month access strategically. Premium trials can test fit, while a single month of a catalog service can reveal whether the rotation suits your backlog.
- Track removals. Start time-limited games first and avoid assuming a save will remain playable through the subscription after removal.
- Reassess at renewal. Catalog composition and prices change; downgrade or cancel if the features you use no longer justify the tier.
Bottom line for different horror players
Choose Game Pass Ultimate when Xbox or PC is your home platform and you want day-one releases, cross-device play, cloud gaming and online console multiplayer in one package. Its documented inclusion of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard shows how quickly it can deliver a high-profile survival-horror experience without a separate purchase.
Choose PlayStation Plus Extra when you own a PS4 or PS5 and your priority is downloading a broad, changing Game Catalog at a lower annual price than Premium. Choose PlayStation Plus Premium only when classics, timed trials or PS5 cloud streaming are central to how you play.
For any single game, the most reliable answer is always the live title page for your country and platform. Subscription catalogs are moving targets, so verify first and treat every price, inclusion and cloud limit as date- and region-specific.
