Game Video Freezes but Audio Continues: What to Do

A game picture freezing while sound continues can have several explanations. Use the symptom to guide safe PC or console troubleshooting—not to diagnose a failed GPU.

If a game image freezes while its audio keeps playing, that symptom alone does not prove the graphics card has failed. First note whether the display is frozen, black, or showing “no signal,” whether audio continues steadily or loops, and whether the image returns. Then use the troubleshooting path for your platform and check whether the problem affects one game or several.

What the symptom can—and cannot—tell you

A still game image with continuing sound means the picture has stopped updating while at least some game or system audio continues. On a Windows PC, one possible explanation is that graphics work is taking too long for the display to update. Microsoft documents Windows Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR), which attempts to recover when a graphics task exceeds the allowed time. Microsoft states, “The default timeout period in Windows is two seconds.” That is the Windows TDR timeout—not a universal time-to-failure for games, nor proof that a particular component is faulty. Microsoft’s TDR documentation describes the mechanism.

The same visible symptom can have different causes, and platform support guidance recommends software and game checks before escalation. Do not replace a GPU, cable, or other hardware based only on this symptom.

Record what happens before troubleshooting

These observations help you choose the right support path; none diagnoses a failed part on its own.

  • Whether it recovers: note if the picture returns on its own or the whole system remains locked.
  • How broadly it happens: record the game, platform, frequency, and whether other games are affected.
  • What changed recently: note game, system, or driver updates and hardware changes.

Fixes to try on a Windows PC

  1. Close background apps. Close unnecessary programs and retry the game. EA lists background applications among the software issues to check when PC games crash or freeze. EA’s troubleshooting guide covers PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
  2. Try a frame-rate cap or V-Sync. Use the game’s available graphics settings and check whether the freeze recurs. EA recommends trying these options; their availability and names depend on the game.
  3. Repair the game files in the EA app, if applicable. EA recommends this for games managed through its app. If the game is managed by another launcher, use that platform’s own repair or verify-files option rather than assuming EA app steps apply.
  4. Try a clean boot if the problem persists. EA recommends a clean boot to check whether background tasks are interfering. Because a clean boot changes which services and startup apps run, follow Windows’ instructions and restore normal startup afterward.
  5. Reinstall only after simpler checks. EA lists reinstalling the game or EA app as another step. Confirm that saves are backed up or synced before removing a game, especially if their location or cloud-sync status is uncertain.

If Windows recovers after the freeze

Write down what was happening just before the freeze, how often it occurs, and whether it is limited to one game or affects the wider PC. Microsoft recommends reviewing the System and Application event logs after a computer recovers from a freeze; those entries can help narrow an investigation but do not independently prove a component has failed. See Microsoft’s Windows freeze troubleshooting guidance.

If audio also fails

If sound is distorted, drops out, or fails outside the game as well, investigate Windows audio separately. Microsoft recommends updating or reinstalling audio drivers for Windows audio problems and checking the device maker’s site if Windows does not find a driver. That guidance addresses audio faults; it does not establish that an audio driver caused the frozen game picture. See Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting steps.

Fixes to try on PlayStation

  1. Check the installation and updates. PlayStation recommends confirming that the game is fully installed and updated, then checking for system software updates.
  2. Test without the existing save. If possible, start from the beginning without loading the current save. This helps check whether the issue is associated with that save; it does not by itself identify the cause.
  3. Reinstall the game if needed. Preserve saved data before taking steps that could remove it, and verify the instructions for your console model before any reset.
  4. Use the platform-specific steps where relevant. EA also recommends updating the system, disconnecting USB devices, restarting, power cycling, reinstalling, and restoring the game’s license for PlayStation cases. Follow instructions for your console generation.

PlayStation’s freeze and crash support page provides its game troubleshooting guidance. If multiple games freeze, PlayStation says the issue might be with the console. If only one game is affected, contact that game’s publisher about known issues.

Fixes to try on Xbox

  1. Check for a system update. EA recommends confirming that the console has the latest system update.
  2. Disconnect attached USB devices and restart. Retry the game after removing peripherals that are not needed for the test.
  3. Power cycle, then reinstall if necessary. EA lists power cycling and reinstalling as additional steps. Follow the instructions for your Xbox generation and protect saved data before removal if its sync status is uncertain.

See EA’s platform troubleshooting guide for its Xbox steps. A freeze in one game versus several can help determine whether to contact the game publisher or seek console support, but the symptom alone does not establish which is at fault.

When to escalate

  • One game only: after the relevant platform checks, contact the publisher and ask about known issues for that game.
  • Several games: seek platform support, particularly on PlayStation, where Sony says problems across multiple games might indicate a console issue.
  • Repeated Windows recovery: keep the event-log entries and your notes about timing, frequency, and activity to share with support or a repair technician.
  • Persistent full-system lockup: if the PC or console does not recover, use the platform’s official recovery and support instructions rather than treating an audio-only symptom as a diagnosis.
