Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics is available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, but only on Nintendo Switch 2. You also need the higher-priced Expansion Pack tier; the official GameCube controller is optional.

If you want to play GameCube games through Nintendo Switch Online, the requirements are straightforward:

  • Nintendo Switch 2: required.
  • Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: required.
  • Official Nintendo GameCube Controller: optional.
  • Original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED: not supported for the GameCube collection.

The practical catch is therefore bigger than an extra subscription fee: an existing Switch owner needs both compatible hardware and the correct membership tier.

What Nintendo actually confirmed

Nintendo confirmed the GameCube collection in April 2025 for the launch of Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. It is delivered as a curated software library called Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics, rather than as a separate GameCube console, a standalone purchase program or access for every Nintendo Switch Online subscriber.

Nintendo Joy-Con (L/R) - Neon Red/Neon Blue
  • Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
  • The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
  • Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
  • Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.

The initial announced games were The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soulcalibur II and F-Zero GX. Nintendo has since expanded the collection. Reported additions include Chibi-Robo, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Wario World and Super Mario Strikers. The catalog changes over time, and availability can vary by region, so check Nintendo’s current Nintendo Switch Online listing before subscribing for one particular game.

The two-part catch

1. GameCube is exclusive to Switch 2

Nintendo’s support documentation describes the GameCube collection as exclusively playable on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo Switch Online itself works across Nintendo’s newer and older systems, but that does not make every library available on every device.

That means:

  • An original Nintendo Switch cannot run the GameCube collection.
  • Nintendo Switch Lite cannot run it.
  • Nintendo Switch OLED cannot run it.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 can run it, provided the account has Expansion Pack access.

Owning an Expansion Pack membership without a Switch 2 is not enough.

2. Standard Nintendo Switch Online is not enough

GameCube is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, not the standard Nintendo Switch Online plan. A standard membership can provide access to other benefits, but it does not unlock Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics. Nintendo’s membership comparison identifies GameCube as an Expansion Pack benefit.

What it costs in the United States

The following U.S. prices were listed in the supplied Nintendo material and checked on August 16, 2026:

Item Price Does it unlock GameCube?
Nintendo Switch Online, individual, 12 months $19.99 No
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, individual, 12 months $49.99 Yes, on Switch 2
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, family, 12 months $79.99 Yes, for eligible accounts in the family group
Nintendo GameCube Controller $69.99 on Nintendo’s membership page; $64.99 in a support FAQ No; optional accessory

Family memberships support up to eight Nintendo Accounts, according to Nintendo. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the household and Nintendo’s family-group rules; it should not be treated as unrestricted sharing between unrelated accounts.

For someone who already owns a Switch 2 and standard Nintendo Switch Online, the relevant upgrade is to Expansion Pack. Someone with an original Switch must factor in the cost of a Switch 2 as well. The real minimum cost for that reader is therefore a Switch 2 plus a $49.99 annual individual Expansion Pack membership, using the listed U.S. prices. The controller is not part of that minimum.

Do you need the official GameCube controller?

No. Nintendo says the GameCube controller is an optional way to play the collection. Compatible Joy-Con 2 controllers and other supported Switch 2 controllers can be used instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official controller may still appeal to players who want the original layout and feel, particularly in games built around the GameCube’s analog stick, C-stick, pressure-sensitive shoulder triggers and distinctive button arrangement. Nintendo describes the modern controller as wireless and rechargeable over USB-C.

It is designed primarily for the GameCube Classics collection. Nintendo also warns that its reduced button layout can create compatibility problems in other Switch 2 software. It is not automatically a universal replacement for a standard Switch 2 controller, and the original wired GameCube controller should not be assumed to work as a supported substitute.

Controls can be changed inside an individual game from the Suspend Menu:

  1. Press ZL.
  2. Select View/Change Controls.
  3. Select Change Controls.

Nintendo’s retrieved U.S. pages show conflicting controller prices—$69.99 on the membership page and $64.99 in the support FAQ—so check the live Nintendo store listing before buying. Nintendo’s support information also says purchase eligibility is limited to paid Nintendo Switch Online members in the U.S. or Canada, with a one-controller-per-account limit in the cited FAQ.

Which games are included?

This is a curated and growing catalog, not the complete GameCube library. Nintendo has not promised every major GameCube release, and a fan-requested title should not be treated as available unless it appears in the current regional listing.

Game Status in the supplied coverage Multiplayer caution
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Initial announced title Primarily a single-player adventure
Soulcalibur II Initial announced title Do not assume original local versus modes are online
F-Zero GX Initial announced title Verify the Switch 2 listing for supported modes
Chibi-Robo, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine Later reported additions Check each title’s regional listing
Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Wario World, Super Mario Strikers Reported additions in later coverage Online and local features must be verified per game

Do not assume that Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle or Rogue Squadron II is included without confirmation in Nintendo’s current catalog.

The games should be understood as classic releases presented through Nintendo’s modernized Classics software and emulation approach—not as full remakes or guaranteed native remasters. Enhanced features, regional versions, peripheral support and display behavior can vary by title.

Is multiplayer online?

Not necessarily. The Nintendo Classics branding does not mean every GameCube title receives online multiplayer. A game that supported local multiplayer on original hardware may retain local play, gain online functionality, or offer a different feature set in its Switch 2 version.

Check each game’s Nintendo listing for the exact combination of online and local support. In particular, do not infer online multiplayer for Soulcalibur II, F-Zero GX or Super Mario Strikers solely from their original multiplayer features.

How to download the GameCube collection

On Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo’s access path is:

  1. Open Nintendo Switch Online from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Nintendo Classics on the left.
  3. Choose the classic-game library selector at the top.
  4. Select the GameCube collection.
  5. Choose Free Download to open its Nintendo eShop page.
  6. Download the collection software.
  7. Launch it while signed in to an account with active Expansion Pack access.

“Free Download” refers to the collection application, not free access without a membership. Nintendo’s detailed instructions are available in its Nintendo Classics support article.

Is access permanent?

No. This is subscription access, not ownership of individual GameCube games. Nintendo describes ongoing access for members with an active Expansion Pack subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the membership expires, access is suspended even if the collection software remains downloaded. Renewing the membership can restore access, assuming the collection remains supported and the account is eligible. Downloading the software does not give you individual ROMs or perpetual licenses.

Nintendo’s support information confirms ongoing access for active members, but offline authentication behavior should not be assumed to be indefinite. Expect the console to require periodic membership verification.

Regional differences matter

The prices above are U.S. dollar prices. Nintendo’s membership pricing and availability differ across markets, and GameCube game lineups, release dates, ratings and controller purchasing eligibility can vary by country. A North American announcement should not automatically be treated as a worldwide release.

Check the Nintendo service page for your region before subscribing. Do not confuse separate regional limits affecting other Nintendo Classics libraries—such as Virtual Boy—with the specific Switch 2 restriction for GameCube.

Who should subscribe?

It is a better fit if you:

  • Already own a Switch 2.
  • Want several games in the current GameCube lineup.
  • Also value the other Expansion Pack classic libraries and bundled benefits.
  • Are comfortable with subscription access instead of permanent ownership.

It is a weaker fit if you:

  • Own only an original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED.
  • Want one specific GameCube game that is not in the catalog.
  • Expect the complete GameCube library.
  • Want permanent access without recurring payments.
  • Primarily want a game that already has a separate remaster, remake or port.

Buying a Switch 2 solely for a small selection of classics can be expensive. Consider the broader Switch 2 software library and hardware features separately rather than treating GameCube access as a complete replacement for original hardware.

The bottom line

Nintendo’s GameCube addition is real, but the catch has two parts: Switch 2 hardware and an Expansion Pack membership are both required. The official GameCube controller is an optional extra, not a prerequisite.

For existing Switch 2 owners who want several included games, Expansion Pack may be a convenient way to access them. For original Switch owners, the proposition is more expensive because the subscription cannot overcome the hardware restriction. And for collectors seeking permanent ownership or the entire GameCube catalog, Nintendo’s curated, subscription-based library is not a full replacement for original games and hardware.
