Games Like 100 Rogues: The Best Turn-Based Roguelikes to Try

If you want the closest overall follow-up to 100 Rogues, start with Caves of Qud. It keeps the traditional-roguelike emphasis on systemic exploration and simulation. Choose Into the Breach when your priority is deliberate tactical positioning, Slay the Spire for card-based build construction, Darkest Dungeon for party management and psychological pressure, or Tiny Rogues for a much larger pool of classes and equipment in a faster, action-oriented format.

These games overlap with 100 Rogues in different ways rather than offering identical substitutes. 100 Rogues comes from the traditional roguelike lineage associated with Nethack, Desktop Dungeons and the original Rogue, while its defining twist is the combination of tactical abilities and RPG skill progression. The best choice after it depends on which part of that formula you want to preserve.

What makes 100 Rogues distinctive?

The official 100 Rogues description calls it “a Traditional Roguelike in the vein of Nethack, Desktop Dungeons or the original Rogue.” That places it in a design tradition built around turn-by-turn decisions, dangerous exploration, resource management and runs that can end permanently. Its stated differentiator is an emphasis on “tactical abilities and RPG skill progression to create strategic gameplay.” In practical terms, the appeal is not simply surviving a dungeon: you are also deciding how a character’s abilities develop and when a tactical option is worth spending.

The game originally released on iOS in 2010. Its official site has announced a Steam rerelease planned for spring 2026, but that announcement described a plan rather than a guarantee of availability; check the current Steam listing before buying. The Steam community description identifies four classes with tactical skills, so class choice and the way each class converts skills into combat options are central to the experience.

For a useful comparison, separate five questions that are often collapsed into the word “roguelike”:

  • How strict is the turn-based structure? Does every action invite careful planning, or does the game ask for real-time movement and aiming?
  • How important is positioning? Are location, enemy lines and move order the main puzzle, or are choices made mostly through cards and menus?
  • How much build construction is there? Do you shape a character through skills, a deck, equipment, traits or some combination?
  • Are you managing one character or a party? A single hero creates a different kind of risk from balancing several adventurers.
  • How closely does the game follow traditional-roguelike simulation? Some games model a broad, reactive world; others use roguelike runs mainly as a structure for focused combat challenges.

The recommendations below are ordered by the kind of player they serve, not by a universal quality ranking.

At a glance: which game is the best match?

Game Turn-based strictness Positioning and tactical planning Build construction Character or party management Traditional-roguelike similarity Best for
Caves of Qud Strict, turn-based Systemic exploration and tactical situations Character development within a highly systemic world Primarily one character Closest match; categorized as both Traditional Roguelike and Turn-based Strategy Players who want classic conventions, simulation and discovery
Into the Breach Strict, turn-based Extremely deliberate, compact combat puzzles Run-to-run decisions and squad improvements A small squad rather than a traditional adventuring party Moderate; it is categorized as Turn-based Strategy Players who plan several moves ahead
Slay the Spire Strict, turn-based Positioning is replaced by card timing and sequencing Deckbuilding is the central progression system One character per run Moderate; categorized as Deckbuilder and Turn-based Strategy Players who enjoy replayable builds without grid combat
Darkest Dungeon Strict, turn-based Formation, target selection and action order matter Party composition, equipment and long-term survival choices Full party management Moderate; a gothic roguelike turn-based RPG Players who want attrition, stress and horror atmosphere
Tiny Rogues Loose match; action-oriented Real-time movement and combat rather than strict turns More than 30 classes, more than 100 traits, equipment and weapons One character per run Loose; a fantasy roguelite bullet-hell dungeon crawler Players who value enormous variety over turn-by-turn pacing

Caves of Qud: the closest traditional-roguelike recommendation

Caves of Qud is the clearest choice when what you miss about 100 Rogues is its ancestry. Rogue by Rogue categorizes it as both “Traditional Roguelike” and “Turn-based strategy,” matching the two most important labels for a reader seeking a direct stylistic successor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it matches

The attraction is systemic exploration rather than a narrow sequence of combat rooms. Traditional-roguelike conventions reward learning how the world behaves, testing interactions and making cautious decisions when you do not know what lies ahead. That makes each run feel like an investigation as well as a battle. If you liked the idea that a tactical ability or character-development choice could change how you approach an encounter, Caves of Qud is the recommendation that preserves that mindset most faithfully.

What changes from 100 Rogues

Do not expect a one-for-one recreation of 100 Rogues’ four-class structure. Caves of Qud is a broader simulation-first experience, so its appeal comes from the range of situations the world can produce rather than from reproducing the same class menu. The learning curve is therefore more about understanding systems and consequences than memorizing a compact set of combat puzzles.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if “traditional roguelike” is the most important phrase in your search.
  • Choose it if exploration and simulation matter as much as winning individual fights.
  • Choose another game first if you want short, tightly bounded tactical scenarios with little systemic overhead.

Into the Breach: the best tactical-puzzle alternative

Into the Breach is the strongest recommendation for players who enjoy the planning side of 100 Rogues more than its traditional simulation. Rogue by Rogue categorizes it as Turn-based Strategy, and its combat is built around compact situations in which you can examine the threat, forecast consequences and choose a response.

Why the turns feel different

In a traditional roguelike, uncertainty and exploration often create the pressure. Into the Breach concentrates that pressure into a small tactical problem. You are encouraged to plan several moves ahead, not merely select the strongest attack available. A successful turn can involve pushing an enemy away, interrupting an attack, protecting a target or arranging the board so that the next enemy action is less dangerous.

How it compares with 100 Rogues’ progression

Both games ask you to think about abilities as tools rather than as a list of damage numbers. The difference is that Into the Breach makes the immediate board state the main source of complexity, while 100 Rogues pairs tactical abilities with RPG skill progression. If you want a long-term character build with traditional exploration, Caves of Qud is closer; if you want a clean tactical test where every move is inspectable, Into the Breach is the better fit.

Platform note

Fangamer lists Into the Breach as a Subset Games title available for Nintendo Switch. Availability on other platforms can change, so confirm the store listing for your system.

Slay the Spire: the best deckbuilding recommendation

Slay the Spire is the right next game when your favorite part of 100 Rogues is making a run stronger through repeated, consequential build choices. Rogue by Rogue categorizes it as both a deckbuilder and turn-based strategy game. Its combat is card-based rather than grid-based, but the run structure still produces the same broad rhythm: choose a path, assemble a build, react to what the run gives you and try again after failure.

What replaces positioning

There is no traditional grid fight to solve. Instead, you decide which cards to add, remove or upgrade and when to spend them. Sequencing, resource management and identifying a coherent plan become the tactical layer. A card that looks weak in isolation can be valuable if it supports the rest of a deck, while an apparently powerful addition can make future draws less reliable. This is a different form of tactical literacy from 100 Rogues, but it rewards the same habit of evaluating options several turns or encounters ahead.

Why it works as a follow-up

Slay the Spire preserves replayability and build experimentation without requiring a traditional-roguelike interface. Runs are easy to understand at a high level, yet the decisions remain deep because each reward changes what is possible later. Pick it when you want the cleanest transition from skill-and-build planning to a purely card-driven system.

The official tabletop connection

Slay the Spire also has an officially sold physical adaptation called Slay the Spire: The Board Game. Contention Games lists retail and collector editions, while Asmodee describes a one-to-four-player cooperative deck-building, dungeon-crawling game. The current component description includes more than 730 cards, more than 500 art sleeves, four miniatures, two map boards, one merchant board, four player boards, one die, 50 plastic cubes and more than 113 tokens. Those quantities describe the listed contents, not a guarantee that every retail package or regional edition is identical, so check the edition details before purchasing. Retail stock, price and regional availability vary.

Darkest Dungeon: the best grim party-management match

Darkest Dungeon is the strongest choice when you want 100 Rogues’ turn-based danger but would rather manage a team than a lone adventurer. Red Hook Studios describes it as “a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring.” That description identifies its distinctive pressure system: survival is shaped not only by health and damage, but also by stress, attrition and the condition of the party.

Party composition is the central build

Instead of asking only whether one character has the right skill, Darkest Dungeon asks whether the group works together. Formation, target selection and the order in which characters act all affect the outcome of a fight. A party that looks powerful on paper can fail if its roles do not support one another or if accumulated damage and stress leave it unable to handle the next expedition.

How the pressure differs from 100 Rogues

100 Rogues emphasizes tactical abilities and RPG skill progression for the character you are controlling. Darkest Dungeon spreads that responsibility across a roster and makes deterioration part of the strategy. You must decide when to push farther, when to retreat and how much risk a particular expedition is worth. The result is less about finding a single perfect build and more about maintaining a functioning group through repeated hardship.

Who will enjoy it

  • Choose Darkest Dungeon if atmosphere, horror and psychological stress are as important as combat tactics.
  • Choose it if you want roster decisions and party composition to matter between battles.
  • Look elsewhere if you prefer a clean, low-attrition puzzle with no long-term concern for a team’s condition.

Tiny Rogues: the high-variety, looser match

Tiny Rogues is worth considering when variety matters more to you than strict turn-based play. Steam describes it as a fantasy roguelite bullet-hell dungeon crawler with RPG elements. That classification is important: it is action-oriented, so it is not a direct substitute for 100 Rogues’ turn-by-turn pacing.

The scale of its build variety

Steam lists more than 40 bosses, more than 400 weapons, more than 500 equipment items, more than 30 character classes and more than 100 traits. Those figures explain its appeal. A run can be shaped by class, traits, weapon choices and equipment combinations, giving you a very large space of possible builds.

What you gain and lose

You gain speed, spectacle and a broad catalog of combinations. You lose the strict pause-and-plan rhythm that defines a traditional turn-based roguelike. Movement and combat are action-oriented, so the test is partly execution and reaction rather than exclusively evaluating a position before committing an action. Treat Tiny Rogues as the recommendation for “more roguelike build variety,” not for “the same combat system.”

How to choose your next game

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

  1. Start with pacing. If every decision must be turn-based, remove Tiny Rogues from the shortlist. If real-time movement sounds refreshing, it becomes a candidate.
  2. Choose your main source of complexity. Pick Caves of Qud for simulation and exploration, Into the Breach for compact tactical puzzles, Slay the Spire for decks, or Darkest Dungeon for party stress and attrition.
  3. Decide whether you want one hero or a group. Caves of Qud, Slay the Spire and Tiny Rogues focus on a single run character. Darkest Dungeon makes roster and party management a core responsibility; Into the Breach uses a squad-oriented tactical structure.
  4. Set your tolerance for uncertainty. Traditional simulation asks you to learn a world’s rules and accept surprises. Into the Breach makes situations more legible and puzzle-like. Slay the Spire replaces environmental uncertainty with changing card rewards and route choices.
  5. Check the platform and edition. The 100 Rogues Steam rerelease was announced for spring 2026, Into the Breach is listed for Nintendo Switch by Fangamer, and Slay the Spire’s board game has separate retail and collector editions. Confirm current platform listings, stock and edition contents for your region.

Best match by player priority

If you want the most traditional experience

Choose Caves of Qud. Its classification as both Traditional Roguelike and Turn-based Strategy makes it the closest match to 100 Rogues’ stated lineage and emphasis on systemic play.

If you want the purest tactical planning

Choose Into the Breach. Its compact encounters make it easier to inspect the immediate problem and reason several moves ahead without learning a large simulation first.

If you want the deepest card-driven builds

Choose Slay the Spire. It keeps the run-based progression and turns every reward into a question about the shape and reliability of your deck.

If you want a stressful expedition with a team

Choose Darkest Dungeon. Its gothic presentation and psychological-stress premise make party condition and attrition inseparable from tactical success.

If you want the largest menu of classes and gear

Choose Tiny Rogues, provided you are comfortable with action-oriented combat. Its listed counts of bosses, weapons, equipment, classes and traits make it the variety pick, not the strict-turn substitute.

What to expect when moving on from 100 Rogues

The biggest adjustment is identifying where each game stores its decisions. In 100 Rogues, tactical abilities and RPG skill progression are joined inside a traditional roguelike framework. Caves of Qud stores complexity in simulation and exploration. Into the Breach stores it in the immediate board state. Slay the Spire stores it in deck composition and card order. Darkest Dungeon stores it in the health and stress of a party over time. Tiny Rogues stores it in action execution and the breadth of its build catalog.

That distinction is more useful than asking which game is “most like” 100 Rogues in the abstract. A player seeking the same lineage should begin with Caves of Qud. A player seeking the same deliberate tactical feeling may prefer Into the Breach. Someone who mainly wants to make a run stronger through escalating choices will likely get more from Slay the Spire, while a horror fan who wants a group under pressure should start with Darkest Dungeon. Tiny Rogues belongs on the list when variety outweighs strict turn structure.
