Slay the Spire is the best next game if your favorite part of 9 Kings is assembling a small deck whose effects compound into an absurdly powerful engine. Choose The King is Watching if the kingdom grid, building placement, spells, and defense are what keep you playing. Choose Hades if you want the same repeated-run experimentation and dramatic power growth in a fast, real-time action game.
These games overlap with 9 Kings in different ways rather than copying its complete formula. 9 Kings combines a turn-based roguelike deckbuilder with an auto battler, tower defense, city building, and diplomacy. The recommendations below separate those ingredients so you can pick the match for the specific kind of overpowered strategy you enjoy.

What makes 9 Kings distinctive
9 Kings is a turn-based roguelike deckbuilding game with auto-battler, tower-defense, and city-building elements. Sad Socket developed it, with Hooded Horse and Sidekick Publishing as publishers. The Steam listing dates its Early Access release to 23 May 2025; the official wiki lists 24 May 2025, a one-day difference attributable to storefront and source-date conventions.

It is finding interactions in which one building, unit, or modifier multiplies the value of several others.

Each of the nine kings starts with a distinct deck. You can loot cards from rival kings, make peace with a king whose cards do not suit your plan, or declare war to obtain powers you want. That diplomatic choice turns deckbuilding into a strategic negotiation: taking every attractive card can dilute a focused engine, while refusing a rival may deny you the exact modifier needed for a run-breaking combination.
A standard single-player run lasts 33 turns, followed by optional endless play. The game also includes multiplayer, asynchronous multiplayer features, and quest mode. Its stated fantasy is to stack buffs and modifiers until you have an effectively invincible army, then watch increasingly powerful challengers collapse—or continue testing how long the build survives.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slay the Spire | Compounding card, relic, and deck synergies | Turn-based card combat | No kingdom grid, economy, or army management | Players who want the purest “break the build” deckbuilder |
| The King is Watching | Grid placement, buildings, spells, and kingdom defense | Real-time attacks and management | Gaze-limited activation and more punishing randomness | Players who enjoy spatial planning under defensive pressure |
| Hades | Repeated runs, escalating power, and build experimentation | Real-time action | No deckbuilding, city grid, or auto-battler layer | Players who want fast combat and persistent progression |
Slay the Spire: the closest card-synergy match
Slay the Spire is the strongest recommendation when the satisfying part of 9 Kings is discovering a compact engine that becomes disproportionately powerful. Mega Crit describes it as a single-player deckbuilder fused with roguelike structure. You choose routes through a changing map, add and remove cards, and collect relics whose passive effects can transform how an entire deck works.

Why its synergies feel familiar
Every card choice changes the odds of drawing the pieces you need together. A modest attack can become exceptional when a deck reliably applies the right status, gains extra energy, or repeats a key effect. Relics add another layer: they can reward a particular card type, alter resource rules, or make a previously weak strategy viable. This is analogous to 9 Kings stacking building and unit modifiers, but the interaction happens inside combat turns rather than across a kingdom grid.

What you give up
There is no city to lay out, economy to balance, or army that fights automatically while you manage a broader formation. You are piloting a character through individual encounters, and positioning is far less important than sequencing cards and managing health, energy, and deck size. If your favorite 9 Kings moment is watching a carefully arranged kingdom produce an overwhelming army, this will feel narrower. If it is finding a loop that makes every later encounter trivial, it is the most direct fit.
Choose it when
- You prefer deliberate, turn-by-turn decisions to spatial construction.
- You want route choices and relics to matter as much as individual cards.
- You enjoy trimming a deck until its key interactions appear consistently.
- You want a single-player roguelike built around repeatable experimentation.
The King is Watching: the closest kingdom-grid match
The King is Watching is the structural alternative: a kingdom-management game built around a grid, buildings, spells, and defense. PC Gamer’s comparison identifies it as the most direct match for the layout-and-management side of 9 Kings. You are not just selecting effects; you are deciding where the infrastructure that produces those effects can operate.
Why the layout matters
The game’s gaze system limits which parts of the kingdom are active at a given time. That makes placement a constant trade-off. A powerful building outside the ruler’s gaze may contribute nothing until you reorganize the grid, while moving it can expose another dependency. The result is a more explicit spatial puzzle than 9 Kings: the board itself becomes part of the production chain.

The pressure and the downside
Attacks occur in real time, so planning is interrupted by the need to respond. PC Gamer also notes that random outcomes can leave a powerful card unusable when its prerequisites fail to appear. That makes recovery from a bad roll less forgiving than in a run where you can patiently assemble the ideal sequence. Expect a slower, more management-heavy rhythm and more moments in which a strong idea must wait for the board or draw to cooperate.

Hades: the action-roguelite alternative with huge build variety
Hades is the right choice when you want the emotional rhythm of repeated runs, surprising combinations, and steadily increasing power, but you prefer direct control over combat. Supergiant describes it as a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which Olympian boons enhance your abilities. It advertises thousands of viable character builds and permanent upgrades that carry between escape attempts.
How its build system compares
Instead of placing buildings or drafting a deck, you choose boons during a run. Each boon modifies an attack, special move, dash, cast, or defensive tool. The strongest builds emerge when those effects reinforce a weapon’s moveset and the rooms you are likely to face. Permanent upgrades provide a separate progression track, so a failed run can still improve future attempts.
Why it feels different
Combat is real time. You must dodge, position yourself, and execute attacks while the build expresses itself through your actions. There is no kingdom economy, grid, auto-battler, or diplomacy with rival kings. The strategic satisfaction is therefore more kinetic: you discover a powerful interaction, then personally exploit it under pressure. Character-driven presentation and story progression also give each failed escape attempt a narrative consequence that 9 Kings does not emphasize.

Build expression
9 Kings expresses a build through cards, buildings, units, spells, and modifiers that work across a kingdom. Slay the Spire concentrates expression in a deck and relic set, making draw order and card removal central. Hades uses weapon aspects, boons, and permanent upgrades, with your execution determining how much value the build produces. The King is Watching expresses strategy through the buildings you obtain and where the gaze-limited grid lets them function.

Spatial and economic management
9 Kings and The King is Watching are the clear choices for players who enjoy balancing a physical layout. In 9 Kings, arrangement supports production, defensive coverage, and the army that eventually fights for you. In The King is Watching, activation depends more directly on where the ruler can see, making every placement a resource decision. Slay the Spire has route and inventory management but no equivalent board. Hades has room-by-room choices rather than an economy or settlement.
Combat format
| If you want… | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Automated armies and planned defenses | 9 Kings | Your preparation determines how buildings and units perform against rival kings. |
| Pure turn-based card sequencing | Slay the Spire | Every encounter asks you to manage cards, energy, health, and future draws. |
| Real-time kingdom defense | The King is Watching | Attacks pressure the layout while gaze limits which buildings can contribute. |
| Real-time character action | Hades | You personally dodge and attack while boons shape your moveset. |
Run length and reset structure
9 Kings gives a single-player run a defined 33-turn arc, with optional endless play afterward. Slay the Spire and Hades are also built around repeated attempts, but their moment-to-moment structure is encounter- or room-based rather than a kingdom turn count. The King is Watching is the better fit if you want a management session whose tension comes from keeping a settlement functioning under attacks rather than racing through a compact deckbuilding route.
Randomness and recovery
All four games use uncertainty to make runs differ. In 9 Kings, rival-kings’ cards, diplomatic choices, and available modifiers shape what your kingdom can become. Slay the Spire mitigates bad draws through deck construction, route planning, and relic selection. Hades lets permanent upgrades soften the impact of failure. The King is Watching can be less forgiving when prerequisites or useful cards do not appear, so choose it only if adapting to an awkward roll sounds interesting rather than frustrating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow readily the systems produce broken synergies
9 Kings makes runaway power an explicit goal: stack enough buffs and modifiers to create an army that overwhelms challengers. Slay the Spire is the most focused alternative for deliberately finding loops, scaling effects, and relic interactions that exceed the normal power curve. Hades can produce spectacular combinations, but their success still depends on your reflexes and positioning. The King is Watching rewards a strong engine, yet its activation constraints and real-time threats make a perfect snowball harder to maintain.

- Pick Slay the Spire if “overpowered strategy” means a deck whose cards and relics multiply one another.
- Pick The King is Watching if the phrase means arranging a productive kingdom and defending it under pressure.
- Pick Hades if you want experimental builds but need fast, hands-on combat and permanent upgrades.
- Stay with 9 Kings if you specifically want all of those layers—cards, grid placement, diplomacy, automated armies, and tower-defense survival—in one run.
9 Kings’ current release status
9 Kings remains an Early Access title according to its Steam listing. The developers list 12 November 2026 as the planned date to leave Early Access, with all nine kings, additional perks, and new modes planned for the full version. As of 18 October 2026, that is a plan rather than confirmation that the full release has occurred. Features, balance, and availability can therefore change before that date.
How to switch from 9 Kings without losing the fun
Start with the system you miss most
Do not choose solely by the shared word “roguelike.” Write down whether your favorite decision is drafting a card, placing a building, surviving a wave, or discovering a modifier that multiplies everything else. Match that answer to the comparison above; each recommendation preserves a different part of the experience.
Expect a different failure lesson
In Slay the Spire, a failed run often points to deck dilution, poor route planning, or inefficient sequencing. In The King is Watching, inspect your layout and activation coverage. In Hades, separate build quality from execution: a promising boon combination may still require better dodging or timing. Treating each game’s failure in its own terms makes the transition more rewarding.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep a small build log
For the first several runs, note the core interaction you were trying to create, the prerequisite that failed, and the decision that helped or hurt it. This is especially useful in games with random cards or boons because it reveals which pieces are essential and which merely look powerful in isolation.
