What makes Annihilated distinctive
Annihilated is an upcoming story-driven roguelite RPG from Flashlight Games. Its Steam listing describes a journey into a cursed dungeon with the last survivor of a rescue party searching for a missing hero’s group. The design combines several genres that are usually kept separate:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Turn-based combat built around deckbuilding and card-battler decisions.
- Roguelite runs through dangerous, changing dungeon environments.
- Visual-novel-style storytelling with choices that affect the story.
- Party-based role-playing and dungeon exploration.
- Dark fantasy and psychological-horror themes.
- Multiple endings rather than one fixed conclusion.
The publisher’s official description calls it “a story-driven roguelite RPG about a journey through the depths with a broken hero — and what they have to answer for.” That wording signals that the narrative is not just decoration around combat: the protagonist’s history, decisions and consequences are central to the experience.

The current Steam listing plans a November 10, 2026 release, following a change from July 22, 2026 to a Q4 2026 window. Because the game is still unreleased, its final systems, launch timing and availability may change. The recommendations below are therefore games you can play now that match specific parts of its announced design, not substitutes based on hands-on comparison.

Darkest Dungeon: the closest overall fit
Why it resembles Annihilated
Darkest Dungeon is the best first choice if what attracts you to Annihilated is the idea of sending a vulnerable group into a hostile, cursed place and dealing with the consequences. Red Hook Studios’ turn-based gothic roguelike RPG makes the party itself a resource. Every expedition asks whether you can push farther for better rewards or retreat before stress, illness and dwindling supplies destroy the run.
The game’s official description emphasizes stress, disease, famine and darkness alongside procedural dungeons and permadeath. Those systems create pressure that is different from simply losing hit points: a hero can become psychologically compromised, incur a lasting disease or die permanently. That focus on mental strain and the cost of continuing is particularly relevant to players drawn to Annihilated’s psychological-horror framing.
What you actually do between battles
- Recruit heroes from a roster of 16 playable classes.
- Assemble a party whose positions and abilities work together.
- Choose how much food, light and other supplies to carry.
- Explore procedurally generated dungeon layouts.
- Manage stress and disease while deciding when to press on or retreat.
- Accept that permadeath can permanently remove a developed character.
These decisions make the game feel like an expedition-management RPG as much as a combat game. A technically victorious battle can still damage the party enough to make the rest of the dungeon unsafe. The resulting stories emerge from failures, panic and hard choices rather than from a visual-novel dialogue system.
Where it differs
Darkest Dungeon does not offer the same announced combination of card-focused deckbuilding and visual-novel-style branching choices. Its depth comes from party composition, ability upgrades, positioning, stress and resource attrition. Choose it when atmosphere, difficulty and party survival matter more to you than building a card engine or pursuing multiple dialogue endings.

The game released on January 19, 2016. It is the strongest recommendation for players who want the dungeon to feel like an adversary that wears down the whole team over many expeditions.
Slay the Spire: the best deckbuilding substitute
Why card-game systems come first
Slay the Spire is the right choice if the card-battler side of Annihilated is your main reason for interest. Mega Crit’s game fuses a traditional deckbuilding card game with roguelike progression. Every run changes the route, enemies, cards, relics and bosses, so you repeatedly solve a new set of tactical and strategic problems rather than replaying a fixed campaign.
The game lists four playable characters, more than 350 cards and more than 200 items. Cards determine your available attacks, defenses and special effects; relics alter the rules of a run or reward particular strategies. The central skill is not merely collecting powerful cards, but keeping the deck coherent enough that useful combinations appear reliably.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How a run develops
- Choose one of the four characters, each with its own card pool and play style.
- Select a path through a branching map containing combat encounters, events, merchants and other opportunities.
- Win battles to add cards, gain rewards and improve the deck.
- Use relics and upgrades to create interactions that change how cards function together.
- Decide whether to take a risky route for stronger rewards or a safer route to preserve the run.
- Face bosses whose mechanics test whether your build can handle a different kind of threat.
This structure makes Slay the Spire exceptionally replayable. It has less of the fixed-character drama and explicit branching narrative promised by Annihilated, but it offers the clearest demonstration of how a run-based card system can produce meaningful decisions every few minutes.

Who should choose it
Pick Slay the Spire if you want to experiment with builds, learn from failed runs and optimize decisions under uncertainty. It is a weaker match for readers seeking party relationships, visual-novel presentation or sustained psychological horror. Its tone is focused on systems mastery rather than dread.
The game released on January 23, 2019. Of the three recommendations, it is the most direct answer to “What should I play if I mainly want Annihilated’s deckbuilding and roguelite combat?”
Inscryption: the best psychological-horror alternative
A card battler that is also a mystery
Inscryption is the closest match for the unsettling, reality-bending side of Annihilated. Daniel Mullins Games describes it as an “inky black card-based odyssey” that combines deckbuilding roguelike play, escape-room-style puzzles and psychological horror. The card game is not isolated from the story; its rules, presentation and surprises are part of the narrative experience.
Instead of presenting a conventional fantasy party and dungeon campaign, Inscryption places you inside a deliberately strange scenario. You learn by playing, exploring and solving environmental problems, with the boundary between game mechanics and story repeatedly made uncertain. That makes it a strong pick for players who want horror conveyed through systems and presentation rather than only through enemies or visual effects.

How it differs from the other recommendations
- Its card battles are more experimental and theatrical than Slay the Spire’s optimization-driven combat.
- It delivers stronger psychological-horror intensity than Darkest Dungeon’s gothic attrition.
- It uses puzzles and narrative reveals instead of a conventional party-management loop.
- Its appeal depends on discovery, so explaining every structural surprise would undermine the experience.
Choose Inscryption when you want a card game that keeps changing what you think the game is. It is the least suitable option if your priority is managing a roster of adventurers through procedural dungeons, but the best fit if you want an ominous story with unusual rules and psychological unease.
Inscryption released on October 19, 2021.

Choose by the experience you want
Choose Darkest Dungeon if you want the dungeon to punish mistakes
Its stress, disease, famine, darkness and permadeath systems make preparation and retreat as important as winning individual fights. The emotional focus is a party slowly being pushed beyond its limits.
Choose Slay the Spire if you want to solve a new build every run
Its branching routes, four characters, 350-plus cards and 200-plus items provide the broadest space for optimization. The challenge is making a reliable deck from imperfect choices.

Play all three in this order if you want a broad preparation for Annihilated
- Start with Darkest Dungeon to experience party attrition, gothic dungeon pressure and psychological strain.
- Move to Slay the Spire to learn the decision density and build experimentation of a polished deckbuilding roguelite.
- Finish with Inscryption for a card game where horror and narrative are inseparable from the mechanics.
This sequence covers the three announced pillars most clearly: dungeon survival, card-based run strategy and psychological-horror storytelling. None reproduces every promised feature of Annihilated, so the choice should follow the element you value most rather than an expectation of an identical game.
What to expect while waiting for Annihilated
The current listing places Annihilated on November 10, 2026, after its date moved from July 22, 2026 to a Q4 2026 window. That is an announced target, not a guarantee that the final build will launch on that exact day. Since the game is not yet released, there are no confirmed player reviews, final performance measurements or settled details beyond its listed premise, tags and design description.
