If you want another game with a world worth getting lost in, first decide what you want to carry over: Baldur’s Gate 3’s tactical party role-playing and consequential choices, or Elden Ring’s open-world exploration and demanding real-time combat. No one recommendation here reproduces both. Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is the clearest pick for tactical party play; The Witcher 3 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 offer different kinds of open-world immersion.
Which parts of Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring do you want more of?
The games share a sense of place and discovery, but their play styles are quite different. Baldur’s Gate 3 centers on party-based tactical role-playing and choices. Elden Ring is an action and open-world RPG, built around real-time combat and exploration. Bandai Namco’s official game page identifies it as an action RPG and open-world RPG; the company describes action RPG combat as real time, with players dodging, striking, and adapting.
| If you want… | Start with… | What carries over | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tactical encounters and party role-play | Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition | Turn-based tactical combat and a party-based RPG structure | It has its own setting and lore, not Baldur’s Gate’s world |
| A large fantasy world and a strong central story | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Exploration, fantasy storytelling, character progression, and combat | It is an action RPG centered on Geralt, not a tactical party RPG |
| A story-driven fantasy party and difficult decisions | Dragon Age: Inquisition | Complex characters, an expansive setting, and consequential decisions | Its combat and structure are not established here as a close match for Baldur’s Gate 3 |
| A grounded medieval world | Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 | Open-world role-play and skill development | It trades high fantasy for a historically grounded setting and first-person swordplay |
For more tactical party role-playing: Divinity: Original Sin 2
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is the strongest starting point if what you miss most is planning party encounters and building a team. Larian’s official game page highlights tactical combat and says up to three other players can join. GameSpot’s recommendation guide also points to it for Baldur’s Gate 3 players, while noting that the games’ settings and lore are separate.
That distinction matters: choose it for the tactical, party-based experience, not as a return to Baldur’s Gate or a continuation of its story. Larian’s page reports a 93 Metacritic rating and more than 160 awards; the page does not state when those figures were reported, so they should be read as studio-reported historical claims rather than current independently checked totals.

For a sprawling fantasy story: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a better fit if the draw is a large fantasy setting, memorable characters, and an ongoing journey through a dangerous world. CD Projekt Red’s official game page describes Geralt’s story across the war-torn Northern Kingdoms, along with open-world exploration, combat, and an overhauled skill system in its remastered presentation.
It is not the same kind of RPG as Baldur’s Gate 3, as GameSpot’s comparison guide notes. Expect an action-led adventure focused on Geralt, rather than turn-based tactical battles built around a customizable adventuring party. Pick it for story, exploration, and action combat, not for a direct match to BG3’s encounter design.

For fantasy companions and difficult choices: Dragon Age
Dragon Age: Inquisition
BioWare describes Dragon Age: Inquisition as a story-driven, open-world fantasy RPG with complex characters, challenging combat, and difficult decisions. It is a natural option if you want a sweeping fantasy campaign with companions and choices at its center. Its broad role-playing appeal overlaps with Baldur’s Gate 3, but that does not make its combat or structure identical.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
EA describes Dragon Age: The Veilguard as a single-player RPG in the Dragon Age franchise. That makes it relevant for readers looking for another character-focused fantasy RPG, but the official description alone does not establish it as a close match for Baldur’s Gate 3’s tactical combat. See the official EA page for its description and platform storefront links.

For open-world action and exploration: choose by combat style
If Elden Ring is the stronger reference point, prioritize real-time action and the urge to explore rather than party tactics. Bandai Namco’s RPG guide groups Elden Ring under both action RPGs and open-world RPGs, and explains the action-RPG label through real-time combat. That makes the category a useful filter, but it does not by itself show that any particular game matches Elden Ring’s combat, difficulty, or world design. The games above are not all Soulslike alternatives: The Witcher 3 is action-led, while Divinity: Original Sin 2 is built around tactical encounters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For grounded medieval immersion: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is worth considering if immersion means inhabiting a medieval world rather than exploring a magical fantasy one. GamesRadar describes it as an immersive open-world RPG set in fifteenth-century Europe, with skill development and freedom to role-play. Its grounded setting and first-person swordplay make it a different proposition from high-fantasy adventures like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Elden Ring. See GamesRadar’s review for its description.
