It replaces haunted houses with a decaying cyberpunk city, mind-hacking investigations and the fear of entering other people’s memories. If you want Bloober’s own slow, environmental exploration, choose Layers of Fear: Final Masterpiece Edition. For a stronger emphasis on combat, ammunition and survival pressure, look at the Switch 2 versions of Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Remake.
This guide separates those games by atmosphere, pacing, setting and combat rather than treating every horror game as interchangeable. It also distinguishes currently playable releases from ONYX: The Dark Grip, a Bloober-linked project announced for 2027.

Observer: System Redux is the best match for psychological cyberpunk horror
Nintendo describes Observer: System Redux as “A first-person cyberpunk horror detective story set in a decaying, neon-scarred future.” That description explains why it is such a strong follow-up for someone who likes Bloober’s discomfort, unreliable perceptions and intimate psychological threats but does not want another haunted mansion.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
How the investigation works
You play Daniel Lazarski, an Observer. His job is not simply to shoot monsters; he hacks suspects’ minds and uses the Dream Eater to investigate memories and fears. The premise makes investigation itself the source of horror. Entering someone’s mental space can reveal evidence, but it also exposes you to disturbing images and unstable realities.
That structure suits players who prefer examining a scene, following a clue and interpreting what a character has experienced. The game’s fear comes from the collision of detective logic with subjective memory: a useful lead can also be a trap, and a seemingly ordinary location can become threatening once you understand whose mind you are inside.
Why it feels like Bloober without repeating Layers of Fear
Observer shares Bloober’s interest in atmosphere, psychological unease and spaces that do not behave normally. Its identity is different, however. Instead of an art-world setting and a deliberately measured house-to-house progression, it uses cyberpunk technology, urban decay and the boundary between human consciousness and machinery.

The setting gives the horror a different texture. Neon, damaged infrastructure and a future shaped by surveillance create a world that feels sick before anything supernatural happens. If what you liked most about Bloober titles was the feeling that the environment was watching, remembering or judging you, Observer translates that feeling into a detective story.
Rank #2
- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn includes bonus in-game content (delivered via an online update) and a set of collectible stickers. This edition also includes a Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card.
What to expect before choosing it
- Choose it for: first-person investigation, memory-focused horror, cyberpunk world-building and a story that makes technology part of the threat.
- Do not choose it expecting: a combat-first game or a straightforward sequence of monster encounters. Its central appeal is investigation and psychological exposure.
- Platform date: Nintendo lists the Switch 2 release for 18 June 2026.
Observer is the clearest recommendation when “like Bloober” means oppressive mood and mind-bending horror, while “different” means a new setting and a detective role.
Layers of Fear: Final Masterpiece Edition is the purest Bloober-style choice
If you want Bloober Team’s own exploration-led formula rather than a similar game from another studio, Layers of Fear: Final Masterpiece Edition is the obvious starting point. Bloober Team launched this edition worldwide on Nintendo Switch 2 on 19 December 2025.
What the edition includes
The Final Masterpiece Edition unifies Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear 2, all previously released downloadable content and brand-new chapters. That makes it a catalog-sized option rather than a single short scenario: one purchase gathers the series’ major stories and additions in one package.
Recommended Free Tools
Bloober says the edition was rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 and fully optimized for Nintendo’s next-generation platform. The Switch 2 version also adds motion controls, Joy-Con interaction and touchscreen support. Those features are most relevant if you want the console itself to participate in exploration, rather than treating handheld play as merely a smaller television display.

- Tenebris Somnia is a survival horror adventure game in the same vein as classics like Silent Hill or Resident Evil - but adapted to a retro 2D aesthetic from the 8 or 16-bit era.
- You will struggle to survive while solving puzzles and fighting horrible creatures. Yet the secrets of the game lie within its cinematics
- When you reach certain key points you will see sequences from a completely different point of view, made in live action with real actors and practical effects - created by a professional and award winning film crew from Argentina.
- English, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (LATAM), and Spanish (Spain) subtitles.
Why it suits exploration-first players
Layers of Fear is built around moving through authored spaces, examining details and allowing the environment to change the meaning of what you have just seen. Its horror is generally slower and more controlled than the Resident Evil alternatives listed below. You are there to absorb a place, notice what has changed and connect visual details to the character’s deteriorating perspective.
The setting is haunted and art-focused, giving the series a distinctive identity among Switch 2 horror games. Paintings, performances, rooms and personal obsessions are not background decoration; they are the language through which the stories create unease.
Who should buy this edition
- Players who want Bloober’s own catalog on one Switch 2 release.
- Players who prefer exploration, atmosphere and narrative discovery over sustained combat.
- Players who value handheld-specific interaction, including motion controls, Joy-Con interaction and touchscreen support.
It is less suitable if your ideal horror loop requires frequent weapon upgrades, ammunition conservation and enemy encounters. For that, move to the Resident Evil section.
Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Remake: choose these for combat and resource pressure
Current Nintendo Switch 2 horror coverage identifies Switch 2 versions of Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Remake. They are useful alternatives to Bloober’s games because they keep the tension of survival horror but put more weight on combat and resource management.
Rank #4
- Immersive first-person gameplay that blends story-driven exploration, environmental puzzles, and psychological horror.
- The interwoven stories of three creators - The Painter, The Actor, and The Writer - each consumed by their craft and willing to pay the ultimate price for it.
- Rebuilt visuals with HDR, and dynamic lighting that deepen atmosphere, enhance realism, and make every flicker of light feel alive.
- A haunting original soundtrack by award-winning composer Arek Reikowski, weaving fragile beauty, emotion, and unease into every scene.
- Languages included are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish.
Resident Evil 2 Remake
This is the best fit of the three if you want survival-horror structure without abandoning investigation and exploration. Its appeal lies in moving through dangerous spaces, deciding when to fight and deciding when preserving resources is wiser. Compared with Observer, the pressure is physical rather than primarily mental: enemies, ammunition and route choices shape each encounter.
Choose it when you want a deliberate survival-horror rhythm that still leaves room to inspect environments and piece together what happened. It is the most natural starting point for a Bloober fan who wants more conventional survival mechanics but does not want an entirely action-driven experience.
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil 3 is the option for players who want more immediate pursuit and action pressure. It remains rooted in biohazard survival horror, but its appeal is less about the slow, isolated unease of a haunted environment and more about surviving direct threats while managing limited resources.
It suits a reader who found Layers of Fear too passive and wants horror that keeps moving. The trade-off is that the experience is less centered on quiet environmental observation than either Layers of Fear or Observer.
Best Value
- Survive horrific Stalkers: Challenge your survival instinct to get away from murderous enemies, hide and evade the deadly stalkers hunting you down, and fight back in critical moments.
- A homage to old-school horror: Feel the atmosphere of this heartfelt love letter to 3rd person survival horrors of the past.
- Hypnosis Powers: Read objects to reveal forgotten memories, expose concealed passages, and reshape your understanding of the environment.
- Explore a richly detailed environment: Find clues and key items, and solve puzzles to access new areas and progress to the final revelation.
- Uncover the secrets of the Cristo Morente: Learn the forgotten story of the convent, the cradle where the myth of the Red Nun began.
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Resident Evil 4 Remake is the most combat-forward recommendation in this group. It still uses survival-horror resource decisions, but the emphasis shifts toward action, enemy encounters and maintaining control under pressure.
Pick it if “horror” for you means fighting through danger rather than slowly decoding a disturbing space. It is the weakest match for someone seeking Bloober’s solitary, introspective mood, but the strongest match for someone who wants a playable combat loop alongside horror tension.
How the three Resident Evil choices differ
| If you prioritize… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration plus survival decisions | Resident Evil 2 Remake | Balances environmental investigation with combat and resource management. |
| More direct pursuit and pressure | Resident Evil 3 | Favors immediate survival-horror action. |
| The heaviest combat emphasis | Resident Evil 4 Remake | Places the greatest weight on action while retaining resource pressure. |
No release dates, prices or regional edition details are established here for the three Switch 2 versions, so verify the listing for your territory before purchase.

- For psychological investigation in a new world: choose Observer: System Redux. Its mind-hacking premise and cyberpunk setting provide the closest thematic bridge from Bloober’s psychological horror to a different kind of story.
- For Bloober’s own slow-burn exploration: choose Layers of Fear: Final Masterpiece Edition. It is the direct catalog option and includes both main Layers of Fear games, prior DLC and new chapters.
- For survival combat with a measured pace: choose Resident Evil 2 Remake.
- For more immediate pursuit and action: choose Resident Evil 3.
- For the most combat-heavy recommendation: choose Resident Evil 4 Remake.
- For a future-looking watch list: keep ONYX: The Dark Grip on your radar, but do not treat it as available software yet.
ONYX: The Dark Grip is a future Bloober-linked project, not a current alternative
Broken Mirror Games, a studio linked with Bloober Team, announced ONYX: The Dark Grip as an original dark adventure launching exclusively on Switch 2 in 2027. The announcement says it is built for handheld play and lets you control both a surviving Vessel and the God possessing him.
That dual-control premise makes ONYX relevant to readers looking for the next unusual psychological or dark-adventure experience on Nintendo’s platform. It is also explicitly a future release. No current playable version, final price or more specific launch date is established here, so it belongs on a watch list rather than in a present-day buying recommendation.
Buying and availability checks before you download or order
- Confirm the platform label: look for the Nintendo Switch 2 version, not a similarly named Nintendo Switch listing.
- Check your region: release timing, language support, age ratings, prices and physical stock can differ by country.
- Decide between digital and physical: Observer has had a Meridiem-announced physical Limited Edition, but boxed availability can vary and should be checked at the time of purchase.
- Check edition contents: Layers of Fear: Final Masterpiece Edition is the package that combines the two Layers of Fear games, prior downloadable content and brand-new chapters.
- Verify current listings: Nintendo’s horror category covers both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch software, so read the exact system designation before buying.
For most Bloober fans, the practical order is Observer first for a fresh psychological setting, Layers of Fear: Final Masterpiece Edition next for the studio’s own exploration formula, and the Resident Evil games when you want combat to become the main source of tension.
