Iratus: Lord of the Dead is the closest match if you want Darkest Dungeon II’s dark atmosphere and side-view, turn-based combat. For tactical roguelite battles built around defending a settlement, try The Last Spell instead. They share some ingredients with Darkest Dungeon II, but neither recreates its road-trip structure and hero-affinity system.
What makes a game similar to Darkest Dungeon II?
Red Hook Studios calls Darkest Dungeon II “a roguelike road trip of the damned.” Its runs send a party through a decaying landscape in a stagecoach, with turn-based battles, provisions, stress and hero relationships shaping the journey. Runs can last from 30 minutes to several hours, and resources can contribute to improvements on later journeys.
The game also offers more than one structure. Steam describes its Kingdoms mode as a separate strategic campaign with a persistent hero roster, resource gathering and progression, distinct from the Confessions mode. So the best alternative depends on what you want to carry over: bleak tone and tactical combat, repeated roguelite runs, party management, or a broader campaign layer.
- For dark, side-view combat: start with Iratus: Lord of the Dead.
- For tactical roguelite battles with defense and base-building: consider The Last Spell.
Iratus: Lord of the Dead is the closest match
Iratus: Lord of the Dead is the strongest fit if you are looking for another dark fantasy game centered on turn-based tactical fights. Its developer presents it as inspired in part by Darkest Dungeon and describes turn-based combat built around a roster of minions. A Steam Community comparison likewise highlights its combat-heavy roguelike structure and resemblance to Darkest Dungeon.

The biggest difference is the premise: you play as a necromancer leading the forces of the dead, rather than guiding a party of heroes on a stagecoach journey. That shift gives the game a different party fantasy even where its tone and combat feel like a closer neighbor. The developer says minions can learn more than 50 talents, offering a range of ways to develop them.
The Last Spell is a looser tactical roguelite alternative
The Last Spell is a better fit if your priority is tactical turn-based battles and roguelite progression, and you are open to a different strategic framework. A Steam Community comparison describes it as a game about defending against zombie hordes with swords and spells, with tower-defense and base-building elements.

- Join the Adventure: Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game is a cooperative dungeon crawler for 1-4 players, where you complete missions and restore the Heir's mansion.
- Face the Darkness: Battle evil forces and overcome challenges as you explore the treacherous Darkest Dungeon.
- Game Components (2 boxes in 1 game!): The Core Game includes all cardboard/paper pieces, while the Strongbox contains detailed miniatures.
- Popular Origin: Based on the critically acclaimed video game by Red Hook Studios, which has sold over 8 million copies.
- Tabletop Transition: Experience the dark and immersive world of Darkest Dungeon now in a board game format.
That defense-focused layer sets it apart from Darkest Dungeon II’s expedition by stagecoach. It is also not the same kind of party-management experience: the available descriptions do not establish an equivalent to DDII’s hero-affinity system. Choose it for the mix of tactical combat and settlement defense, not as a direct substitute for the road journey.
Which game should you choose?
| Game | Best fit | What overlaps with Darkest Dungeon II | What differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iratus: Lord of the Dead | Players seeking the closest dark-fantasy combat comparison | Dark tone, turn-based tactical combat, and a roguelike structure | You command undead minions as a necromancer rather than heroes on a road expedition |
| The Last Spell | Players who want tactical roguelite battles with a defensive strategic layer | Turn-based tactical decisions and roguelite progression | Its central emphasis is defending against hordes, with tower-defense and base-building elements |
Other Darkest Dungeon II details worth keeping in mind
If the element you like is the journey itself, rather than just the turn-based fights, Darkest Dungeon II’s official page emphasizes the stagecoach trip, supplies, stress and relationships as parts of the run. Its separate Kingdoms mode provides a more persistent strategic campaign with a continuing hero roster. The recommendations above match selected parts of the game, not all of these systems at once.
