Games like Death and Taxes for players who enjoy moral choices and workplace satire

If you want a game that turns routine paperwork into an ethical crisis, start with Papers, Please. It is the closest match for Death and Taxes because both make you apply institutional rules while deciding when a person’s circumstances matter more than procedure. Choose Reigns for rapid binary decisions, Beholder for surveillance and coercion, or Animal Inspector for another inspection-centered narrative. Orwell and Not For Broadcast broaden the formula into investigative desk work and live media control.

The shared appeal is not a particular setting. It is the conversion of an ordinary job into moral pressure: every form, inspection, report, edit or approval can affect someone’s safety, freedom, income or future.

What makes Death and Taxes distinctive?

Death and Taxes is a short narrative indie game in which you take an office job as the Grim Reaper and decide which people live or die. The official description frames those decisions as part of a larger workplace routine: you keep chaos away, foil plots, talk to a boss, complete paperwork, earn money, decorate a desk and climb toward “MIDDLE-MANAGEMENT.”

That contrast—cosmic consequences presented through mundane administration—is the game’s central joke and its source of tension. The workday looks procedural, but each file represents a human outcome. The office setting also gives the satire a target: hierarchy, performance expectations and the way institutions make extraordinary decisions feel like ordinary tasks.

Steam classifies the game with Choices Matter, Story Rich, Simulation, Multiple Endings, Dark Comedy, Narrative and Dialogue Heavy tags. Those labels describe a choice-driven work sim rather than a conventional action game: your main tools are judgment, conversation and compliance, not combat or exploration.

Creator Leene Künnap has explained the personal weight behind the subject: “I lost my mother when I was 10. I had no-one to talk to, as the western society doesn’t really know how to deal with serious topics… like death.” That context helps explain why the comedy is not simply parody. The office absurdity sits alongside grief, responsibility and the discomfort of deciding who receives another chance.

As platform snapshots, the available audience figures should be read narrowly. Google Play showed 100K+ downloads and a 4.2 rating from 1.12K reviews on a crawl accessed October 18, 2026. Steam showed 4,102 English reviews, with 85% positive, in a snapshot accessed the same day. Neither figure is a universal lifetime total, and ratings can change.

Six games like Death and Taxes at a glance

Game Work loop Where the moral pressure comes from Main difference from Death and Taxes
Papers, Please Bureaucratic inspection and rule application Procedural rules versus humanitarian exceptions More procedural and time-pressure driven
Reigns Fast binary decisions Short-term consequences in a ruling system Kingdom-management framing rather than an office
Beholder Surveillance and tenancy administration Coercion, scarce resources and competing obligations More oppressive and resource-management focused
Animal Inspector Inspection tasks and narrative decisions Professional judgment applied to individual cases Narrower focus on inspection work
Orwell Desk-based information gathering Institutional consequences of selecting and interpreting data Investigation and surveillance replace afterlife paperwork
Not For Broadcast Live media production and multitasking Propaganda, editorial choices and institutional pressure Real-time broadcast control replaces forms and files

The most useful way to compare them is by asking what kind of work you want to perform. Death and Taxes uses an office and paperwork; the alternatives move the same ethical structure to a border post, a throne, an apartment block, an information network or a television station.

Papers, Please: the closest match for rules and exceptions

Choose Papers, Please first if the part of Death and Taxes you enjoy most is checking rules while knowing that strict compliance can hurt a real person. Its core loop is bureaucratic inspection: you apply formal requirements, work through cases and decide whether an exception is justified.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

The difference is pace and texture. Where Death and Taxes presents an afterlife office with dialogue, decoration and a darkly comic narrative frame, Papers, Please is more procedural and time-pressure driven. The job itself becomes the immediate challenge. Accuracy, speed and the consequences of a decision are tightly connected.

It is the strongest recommendation for players who want moral choices embedded in a rule system rather than presented as isolated dramatic prompts. The ethical question is rarely “What is the obviously kind action?” It is “What happens when the rule, the evidence and the person in front of you do not align?” That friction makes it the clearest example of a moral-choice office game even though its setting is a border checkpoint rather than an office.

Reigns: compact choices with expanding consequences

Reigns keeps the decision structure but compresses it into fast binary choices. You respond to prompts and manage a kingdom, so each choice can alter the balance of competing interests and create consequences that appear later.

Its main difference is framing. It is not an office simulation: there is no desk job, paperwork routine or workplace hierarchy in the same sense. The kingdom-management structure replaces the afterlife bureaucracy. That makes Reigns a good fit when you want the rhythm of making one consequential decision after another, but do not need the workplace satire to be literal.

The game also changes how agency feels. In Death and Taxes, the workday and conversations make decisions feel like part of an institution. In Reigns, the compact prompt format emphasizes chains of cause and effect. Pick it for short sessions and dark humor built around a succession of seemingly simple choices.

Compared with Death and Taxes, it is more oppressive and more focused on resource management. The pressure does not come only from deciding an individual’s fate; it comes from trying to satisfy institutional demands while dealing with limited means and the needs of the people under your control. Helping one person can create risk elsewhere, and refusing a demand can threaten your own position.

This is the recommendation for readers who want the workplace satire sharpened into a critique of authoritarian administration. Its moral cost is often coercive rather than merely tragic: surveillance changes what privacy means, and the job’s requirements can turn ordinary management into complicity.

Animal Inspector: a narrower inspection-centered narrative

Animal Inspector is the most direct alternative if you want another game built around inspection work and narrative decisions. The inspection framing keeps attention on cases, judgments and the responsibility attached to professional authority.

Its scope is narrower than Death and Taxes. The afterlife office combines paperwork with conversations, personal progression, desk decoration and a broad dark-comedy premise. Animal Inspector concentrates more tightly on inspection tasks, so its appeal depends on whether you prefer a focused professional routine or a wider workplace story.

Choose it when the satisfying part of the formula is evaluating cases and deciding how an official role should be used. It is less useful as a substitute for the Grim Reaper’s surreal office setting, but it belongs in the same family of games where procedural work carries narrative and ethical consequences.

Orwell: investigation instead of paperwork

Orwell translates desk-based moral choice into information gathering and surveillance. You investigate through an institutional information network, selecting and interpreting material that can affect other people.

The work loop changes from rule checking to assembling a picture from available evidence. That makes the player’s agency more interpretive: what you notice, include or treat as significant can shape institutional action. The ethical pressure comes from access and consequence rather than from deciding who passes a formal inspection.

It is a strong choice if you want the office feel—screens, files and controlled access—without an afterlife theme. The satire targets surveillance and the power of institutions to turn personal information into decisions. Expect investigation and political consequences, not the paperwork-and-boss routine that defines Death and Taxes.

Its central task is multitasking rather than filing or inspection. Choices occur through live control of a broadcast, so timing and operational mistakes matter alongside the political meaning of the material you transmit. The workplace remains satirical, but the institution is a media operation rather than an afterlife bureaucracy.

Pick it when you want the strongest emphasis on propaganda, editorial responsibility and performance under pressure. It shares Death and Taxes’s interest in how a job can normalize morally significant actions, yet its presentation is more kinetic: live production replaces the measured rhythm of office paperwork.

How the moral-choice systems differ

Work loop

The first distinction is what you repeatedly do. Death and Taxes asks you to process cases and complete office tasks. Papers, Please applies rules under time pressure. Reigns delivers rapid binary prompts. Beholder combines surveillance with tenancy administration. Animal Inspector focuses on inspection. Orwell asks you to gather and interpret information. Not For Broadcast makes live editing and multitasking the job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Agency and branching

These games also differ in how clearly choices branch. Death and Taxes explicitly foregrounds multiple endings and world-affecting decisions. Reigns emphasizes consequence chains from compact choices. The other games place more weight on procedural outcomes, institutional effects or resource pressure. If you want a visibly branching narrative, begin with Death and Taxes or Reigns; if you want the feeling of being constrained by a system, look to Papers, Please, Beholder or Orwell.

Satire target

The target determines the tone. Death and Taxes satirizes office hierarchy and bureaucratic advancement. Papers, Please focuses on state procedure. Beholder turns surveillance and authoritarian obedience into the source of pressure. Orwell examines information control. Not For Broadcast attacks propaganda and institutional media work. Reigns uses a kingdom-management frame, while Animal Inspector keeps its attention on the authority of inspection.

Moral cost

Ask what your decision threatens. In Death and Taxes, it can be a person’s life and your standing at work. In Papers, Please, humanitarian exceptions collide with procedural demands. In Beholder, helping tenants can conflict with coercive orders and scarce resources. Orwell makes privacy and institutional action the stakes. Not For Broadcast connects professional performance to propaganda. These are not interchangeable forms of guilt: the source of pressure changes the way each game feels.

Which game should you play first?

If you want… Start with… Because…
Strict rules, exceptions and a pressured routine Papers, Please It is the closest procedural parallel to deciding cases in Death and Taxes.
Very short decision prompts and consequence chains Reigns Its binary choices create a fast, compact rhythm.
Surveillance, coercion and resource strain Beholder Its tenancy administration makes institutional complicity central.
Inspection work with a narrower scope Animal Inspector It keeps the professional-evaluation frame in focus.
Investigative desk work and information control Orwell Evidence selection replaces afterlife paperwork.
Live media work and propaganda satire Not For Broadcast Multitasking and broadcast decisions create the pressure.

For the closest overall follow-up, play Papers, Please. For the broadest tour of the idea, follow it with Reigns, Beholder, Animal Inspector, Orwell and Not For Broadcast in the order that matches your preferred institution and pace.

What to expect if you are coming directly from Death and Taxes

  • Less personal office texture: several alternatives replace desk decoration, workplace conversations and career progression with a more focused task loop.
  • Different pacing: Papers, Please and Not For Broadcast add time or multitasking pressure, while Reigns makes decisions extremely quick.
  • Different kinds of consequence: some games foreground endings, while others emphasize resources, institutional action or the cumulative effect of information.
  • Different emotional register: the watercolor dark comedy of an afterlife office is not the same as oppressive surveillance, realistic political satire or absurdist kingdom management.

The unifying design is the same: a constrained job makes ethical choices unavoidable. The setting determines whether that pressure feels like a joke about middle management, a crisis at a checkpoint, a threat from an authoritarian system, a question of privacy or a decision made on live television.
