Games Like Deck of Haunts: The Best Haunted-House and Deck-Building Alternatives

The closest game to Deck of Haunts depends on which part you want to keep. Choose Betrayal at House on the Hill for a modular haunted mansion, hidden information and social haunt scenarios; Slay the Spire for the deepest traditional solo deckbuilding; Monster Train for layered battlefield construction and extensive upgrades; or Inscryption for unsettling story, puzzles and psychological horror.

Deck of Haunts is unusual because you play the haunted house itself. Released on Steam on 7 May 2025, it combines room planning, a card-driven roguelite run, tower-defense pressure and horror. You lure people into cursed rooms, use cards to summon spirits or change the mansion, push visitors toward madness and defend the Heart room. The alternatives below preserve different parts of that formula rather than pretending any one of them is an identical replacement.

What makes Deck of Haunts different?

Most haunted-house games put you in the role of an investigator, survivor or trespasser. Deck of Haunts reverses that viewpoint: the mansion is the player character. Its official Steam description calls it a twist on deckbuilding roguelikes, and its tags identify a hybrid of card game, roguelite, horror, base building, turn-based strategy, tower defense and deckbuilding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That combination creates three simultaneous decisions. First, you assemble a deck that determines which supernatural effects are available during a run. Second, you customize the house by arranging rooms and protecting the Heart. Third, you manipulate visitors, trying to make them lose their sanity before they reach safety. A game can resemble Deck of Haunts in atmosphere while lacking its spatial construction, or resemble it mechanically while having no haunted-house fiction at all.

Treat that date as the announced console schedule and check the relevant storefront for current regional availability.

Steam’s crawl snapshot recorded 84% positive from 1,262 all-time reviews and 76% positive from 56 recent reviews. Those figures are time-sensitive snapshots, not permanent ratings; the recent sample is especially small and can move quickly.

Quick comparison: which alternative fits your priority?

The table uses editorial recommendations based on the documented mechanics, not numerical review scores. “High” means the game is a particularly strong match for that specific preference, not that it reproduces every part of Deck of Haunts.

Betrayal at House on the Hill: the closest haunted-house fantasy

Why it is the best thematic match

If your favorite part of Deck of Haunts is the mansion, start here. Betrayal at House on the Hill uses modular house tiles, so the floor plan is assembled as players explore rather than presented as a fixed map. Omen cards build tension and eventually trigger a haunt roll. The resulting scenario can become cooperative or reveal a traitor, depending on the haunt.

Rank #2
Hasbro Gaming Avalon Hill Betrayal at The House on The Hill Second Edition Cooperative Board Game, Ages 12 and Up, 3-6 Players, 50 Chilling Scenarios
  • RE-PLAYABLE NARRATIVE BOARD GAME: Tile by tile, terror by terror, build their own haunted mansion and then try to escape it alive. The game is for 3-6 players and takes about 60 minutes to play
  • MODULAR BOARD PIECES: The Betrayal at House on the Hill tabletop game features 50 blood-curdling scenarios. Each trip to the house promises fresh horrors and a new story is created every time you play
  • HAUNTED HOUSE TRAITOR GAME: Players must work together to survive the nightmare…but beware! The house turns one player against the others in this cooperative strategy game
  • MINIATURES BOARD GAME: This second edition of Betrayal at House on the Hill includes 6 pre-painted plastic explorer figures, 80 cards, 149 tokens, 44 room tiles, 2 haunt books, and more
  • IMMERSIVE NARRATIVE: Get ready for an unpredictable and thrilling exploration of the haunted house. Encounter witches, dragons, zombies, and other spooky and bizarre B-movie horror clichés

That structure captures the drama of entering an unknown house, discovering that its rules have changed and learning that another player may have a different objective. It is the strongest recommendation for readers who want exploration, hidden information and a memorable story that emerges from a specific scenario.

What it shares with Deck of Haunts

  • A haunted mansion is the central space, not a decorative backdrop.
  • Room layout changes the situation and creates tactical or narrative consequences.
  • Supernatural events escalate from exploration into a confrontation.
  • Each session can develop differently because the house and scenario are not completely fixed.

What it does not share

  • It is a physical board game, not a digital roguelite.
  • Players explore characters inside the house instead of controlling the building itself.
  • Its core drama comes from a haunt and possible traitor, not from drawing cards to operate rooms and defend a Heart.
  • It is designed for multiplayer table play rather than a solo run.

Choose this when social tension matters more than deck construction. The modular mansion, omen cards, haunt roll and hidden-traitor possibilities make it a natural physical haunted-house companion, but a poor substitute if your priority is automated single-player progression or a customizable supernatural deck.

Slay the Spire: the purest deckbuilding alternative

Why deckbuilder fans should choose it

Slay the Spire is the clearest answer to “What should I play after Deck of Haunts?” when the answer is “another run-based card game.” Released in 2019, it is a single-player climb in which you build a deck, choose routes through a changing map, collect relics and face different enemies and bosses from run to run. Its design is intentionally concentrated on card evaluation and route planning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important similarity is not the setting but the rhythm: begin with a limited toolkit, make imperfect choices during a run, and gradually create combinations that are stronger than the starter deck. You are constantly weighing an immediate improvement against the possibility that it will make the deck less consistent later.

Rank #3
Betrayal Legacy (Board Game, Betrayal at House on The Hill)
  • Beware! In “Legacy” board games, any move you make could come back to haunt you on the next time you play.
  • Unlock the mysteries of the iconic house during a 13-episode campaign. Once all the secrets are revealed, you’ll have a fully replayable, customized board game.
  • With 52 blood-curdling haunts—including 13 that permanently alter your copy of the game—each trip to the house on the hill promises fresh horrors and discoveries.
  • Players must work together to survive the nightmare. . .until the house forces some of you against the rest.

Where it goes deeper than Deck of Haunts

  • Route decisions are central, so you can select safer fights, elite encounters, events or recovery opportunities according to the run’s needs.
  • Relics provide persistent rule changes that reshape how cards work together.
  • Different enemies and bosses force you to adapt rather than rely on one universal deck.
  • The game keeps the interface and fiction focused on combat decisions, making card sequencing easier to study.

What you give up

There is no haunted mansion to design, no visitor population to drive insane and no room-by-room defense layer. The horror identity of Deck of Haunts is replaced by a fantasy ascent. If you want to feel like an architect of a cursed building, Slay the Spire will seem abstract. If you want the most refined version of the deckbuilding loop itself, it is the safer recommendation.

Pick Slay the Spire when your deciding questions are: “How much does every card choice matter?” “Can I replay the same basic climb with different strategies?” and “Do I want a solo game built almost entirely around runs, routes, relics and bosses?”

Monster Train: deckbuilding with battlefield construction

Why it overlaps with the building side

Monster Train is the strongest alternative for players who like managing a physical space while improving a deck. Battles take place across three vertical battlefields, creating several simultaneous defensive layers. You must decide where units and effects belong, then account for how upgrades and enemy movement interact across those floors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game offers five clans, card upgrades and route decisions. Its Steam listing specifies more than 220 cards, 10 starter decks, 25 Covenant difficulty levels and Workshop mod support. Those figures describe the listed Steam edition; they are not a promise that every platform has identical features or content.

Rank #4
Avalon Hill Betrayal at House on the Hill Widow's Walk Strategy Board Game
  • Expansion. Requires Betrayal House on the Hill
  • Compatible with all editions
  • 50 new haunts, 20 new room tiles, 30 new cards (11 items, 11 events, 8 omens), 78 new tokens
  • Never before explored new floor THE ROOF.

How its decisions compare

  • Deck choices determine which units, spells and upgrades you can access.
  • Placement matters because the three floors create a vertical combat puzzle rather than a single lane.
  • Clan combinations give runs a different identity, similar to choosing a new strategic foundation.
  • Covenant levels provide a structured difficulty ladder for players who want escalating constraints.

Why it is not a haunted-house game

Monster Train is dark fantasy, not horror about a sentient mansion. Its construction is battlefield layering rather than room architecture, and its threats are resolved through tactical combat instead of manipulating human visitors’ sanity. You should choose it for systems overlap: deck upgrades, route planning, multi-position defense and replayable difficulty. Do not choose it expecting the narrative unease or architectural fantasy of Deck of Haunts.

Workshop support is a meaningful reason to prefer the Steam version if you enjoy community modifications, but platform-specific feature lists can change. Verify the store page for the edition you intend to play.

Inscryption: the strongest horror and puzzle alternative

Why it matches the mood

Inscryption is the recommendation for readers who remember the unsettling atmosphere more than the building mechanics. Its official description presents a card-based odyssey that combines deckbuilding roguelike play, escape-room puzzles and psychological horror. The card table is part of a larger mystery, so the rules, environment and story continually influence one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes it a different kind of horror from Deck of Haunts. Deck of Haunts turns fear into a strategic resource: you arrange rooms, play supernatural cards and pressure visitors. Inscryption uses uncertainty and discovery. The player is encouraged to question what the game is showing, solve environmental problems and follow a story that extends beyond ordinary matches.

  • HENRY BOWERS CHARACTER AND MONSTERS: Also includes a unique character board overlay of notorious menace Henry Bowers, 4 It Chapter Two room tiles, and 3 cardboard monster tokens

Shared strengths

  • Card decisions are inseparable from an oppressive horror presentation.
  • Runs and encounters can produce surprising combinations and reversals.
  • The game rewards curiosity rather than treating the card table as a purely abstract interface.
  • Psychological tension is a primary feature, not just visual decoration.

Important differences

  • You do not design a haunted mansion or control rooms.
  • Its puzzle and narrative structure is more prominent than Deck of Haunts’ base-building loop.
  • It is a single-player digital experience rather than a physical multiplayer scenario.

Choose Inscryption if you want the darkest, most story-driven follow-up. It is less suitable for someone specifically seeking room placement, visitor routing or a long-term house-management system.

How to choose in five questions

  1. Do you want to play with other people at a table? Choose Betrayal at House on the Hill. It is the only recommendation here built around physical multiplayer and a possible traitor.
  2. Is the card loop the non-negotiable feature? Choose Slay the Spire for a focused solo roguelike deckbuilder. Choose Monster Train instead if you want cards to control several battlefield positions.
  3. Do you need actual mansion exploration? Betrayal is the closest match because its house is assembled from modular tiles. Deck of Haunts remains the better fit if you specifically want to be the house.
  4. Should the game frighten you through story and uncertainty? Choose Inscryption. Its escape-room puzzles and psychological horror give it a stronger narrative-mystery emphasis.
  5. Do you want construction plus tactical defense? Choose Monster Train for three-floor battlefield management, or stay with Deck of Haunts if room arrangement and protecting the Heart are the defining appeal.

What each game teaches you about Deck of Haunts

Comparing these titles clarifies why Deck of Haunts occupies a narrow niche. Betrayal demonstrates the power of a changing mansion and secret objectives, but it lacks a digital run-based deck. Slay the Spire demonstrates how much depth can come from route selection, relics and card consistency without any base-building fiction. Monster Train shows how spatial decisions can be made tactically across several battlefields. Inscryption shows how cards can support puzzles and psychological storytelling rather than only combat.

Deck of Haunts sits at the intersection: the player has agency over the building, the deck changes over a run, and visitors create a pressure system that makes room arrangement consequential. That is why “closest” must be qualified. Thematically, Betrayal is nearest. Mechanically, Slay the Spire and Monster Train are stronger references. Tonally, Inscryption is the better horror companion.

Platforms, editions and changing storefront information

Deck of Haunts is documented as a Steam release from 7 May 2025. The 24 September 2026 developer announcement listed Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S versions with an 8 October 2026 launch date, alongside added content and controller improvements. Because the announcement is dated and storefront availability can differ by country, confirm the current edition, feature set and purchase options before buying.

No stable cross-platform price comparison is established here. Digital prices vary by currency, sale period and platform, while the physical price and edition of Betrayal at House on the Hill can vary by retailer and printing. Treat any price shown on a storefront as the relevant current figure rather than assuming that one region or sale applies everywhere.

Platform format is itself a decision: Betrayal requires a physical group and table space; the other recommendations are digital single-player games. Controller support, mod access and content parity can differ between PC and console editions, so check the specific store listing for the hardware you use.

Bottom line by player type

  • Closest haunted-house fantasy: Betrayal at House on the Hill.
  • Best traditional deckbuilding: Slay the Spire.
  • Best deckbuilding plus spatial tactics: Monster Train.
  • Best psychological horror and puzzles: Inscryption.
  • Best choice if you want to be the mansion itself: Deck of Haunts remains distinctive; none of the alternatives reproduces that exact role.
