Games Like Dicevaders: The Best Dice-Based Roguelikes to Try Next

If you want another game after Dicevaders, start by identifying what you actually want to keep: dice-powered equipment, deliberate control over randomness, tactical placement on a board, or a run built around layered unit and artifact synergies. Dicey Dungeons is the clearest established next stop for equipment activated by rolls. If the part you enjoy most is placing units and turning several dice results into a scoring engine, Dicevaders remains unusually specific rather than something another title copies exactly.

This guide compares the games by mechanics instead of pretending there is a universal ranking. It also separates verified information from discovery leads whose current platforms, prices, and systems still need checking.

What makes Dicevaders different?

Dicevaders is a dice-based roguelike deckbuilder developed by Pengonauts and published by Playstack. Its Steam listing gives a release date of September 29, 2026 and describes the objective as building an alien invasion force on a grid, collecting units and artifacts, and using the resources Chrono and Budge to manipulate dice. The official description calls it “a dice-based roguelike deckbuilder about leading the ultimate alien invasion.” Read the official Steam listing.

The important distinction is where a roll matters. Dicevaders does not use dice merely as damage numbers or as random costs for individual cards. Dice results determine which grid columns score. Your commanders, perks, artifacts, unit combinations, and placement decisions then change how valuable those scoring columns become. A good run therefore asks two questions at once: which result did you roll, and how prepared is your board to exploit it?

A six-column scoring board

A PC Gamer review published October 3, 2026 describes a six-column board in which three dice select the columns that score. That is the reviewer’s explanation of play rather than an additional official specification, but it clarifies the central tension: the roll chooses opportunities while your existing board determines whether those opportunities are valuable. A unit in the wrong column can be irrelevant for one roll and decisive for the next.

This makes placement part of the probability plan. You are not only asking whether a die shows a high or low value. You are arranging a board so several possible columns, or several combinations of columns, remain useful. Artifacts and unit synergies can turn a merely acceptable result into a chain of scoring effects, while a poorly arranged force can leave the same result with little payoff.

Chrono, Budge, and controlled randomness

Dicevaders gives you resources that can alter the risk of a roll. The official listing names Chrono and Budge as tools for manipulating dice; the PC Gamer review specifically discusses shifting or rerolling results. The practical implication is that you are making a resource decision, not simply accepting or rejecting luck. Spending a manipulation resource now may rescue a weak scoring turn, but preserving it can protect a later turn when several synergies are ready to trigger.

That resource layer is why “random” is an incomplete description of the game. The dice still create uncertainty, yet your board, artifacts, perks, commanders, and manipulation resources determine how much that uncertainty matters. A run’s strategy is distributed across preparation, placement, and timing rather than concentrated in a single deckbuilding choice.

Why builds compound over a run

Dicevaders lets unit and artifact combinations create an escalating scoring engine. Early decisions can therefore have effects well beyond the turn on which you make them. A unit may be modest by itself but become valuable when an artifact, commander, or perk makes a particular column score more often or score more efficiently. The result is a roguelike in which the shape of the board is as important as the list of things you own.

If that combination of tactical placement and dice manipulation is the feature you are chasing, be cautious with generic “dice roguelike” lists. Many games use dice as equipment costs, attack rolls, or resource values; far fewer make the roll select locations on a multi-column scoring board.

How to choose a game after Dicevaders

Use the following questions before picking a title. They identify the mechanical feature you want to preserve and prevent a superficially similar recommendation from feeling wrong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you want dice to activate equipment?

Choose Dicey Dungeons when the satisfying moment is rolling a number that lets a particular weapon, spell, or other piece of equipment fire. Its equipment-driven encounters make the die feel like an activation condition. That is a different rhythm from Dicevaders, where dice select scoring columns and the board’s arrangement determines the payoff.

Do you want tactical placement to remain central?

Stay closest to Dicevaders when you want to decide where units sit before discovering which columns will score. Placement creates a spatial problem that an equipment-only system does not reproduce. You should expect fewer direct substitutes because the distinctive challenge comes from preparing several board positions for uncertain results.

Do you want more control over an individual roll?

Look for games that explicitly offer rerolls, value shifts, extra dice, or build effects that make a specific result less essential. Dicevaders already belongs in this category through Chrono and Budge, with the review describing shifting and rerolling. When checking another game, confirm which form of control it provides: a reroll changes the entire result, a value shift changes a selected die, and an extra die may increase options without making any one result reliable. Those are not interchangeable experiences.

Do you want strategy to live in a party, equipment set, or run-long engine?

Dicevaders concentrates strategy in board placement, commanders, perks, artifacts, and unit synergies. Dicey Dungeons concentrates more of the decision-making in equipment and the fighter you selected. A game can be “dice-based” while moving the main build decision to an entirely different layer, so compare that layer rather than the presence of dice alone.

Dicey Dungeons: the closest accessible alternative

Dicey Dungeons is the strongest verified recommendation for readers who want dice to power specific pieces of equipment in a turn-based roguelike. Its official site links versions for Steam, itch.io, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, iOS, and Android. Check the official platform links.

How its core loop differs

The game offers six fighters and builds dungeon progression around the equipment each fighter can use. In an encounter, your roll supplies the values that equipment needs, so the tactical question is usually how to allocate a result among available attacks, defenses, or utility actions. That creates a more immediate, character-focused puzzle than Dicevaders’ six-column board.

The difference is useful rather than a drawback. If Dicevaders feels exciting because you are engineering a board-wide scoring engine, Dicey Dungeons gives you a new problem: assemble an equipment loadout whose requirements work together under the numbers you are likely to roll. You trade alien-unit placement for decisions about which equipment to keep, which fighter to develop, and how to spend each turn’s dice.

Who should play it next?

  • Choose it for equipment activation. Rolls directly power specific equipment, matching the desire to make every die feel attached to a concrete action.
  • Choose it for a different run structure. The six fighters and equipment-driven dungeon progression change the source of build variety instead of reproducing Dicevaders’ commanders, perks, artifacts, and grid.
  • Do not choose it expecting a six-column board. Its documented design is encounter-based and equipment-led, so it will not provide Dicevaders’ spatial scoring problem.

Availability and physical-edition caution

The official site lists digital platforms, but storefront availability and regional editions can change. A reference page records a limited Nintendo Switch physical edition distributed by Super Rare Games beginning September 22, 2022; that historical release date does not establish present stock. Treat the current digital store pages as the reliable way to check where you can buy and play it. See the release reference.

Dicevaders versus Dicey Dungeons

This table keeps the comparison tied to documented differences instead of inventing scores or a ranking.

Question Dicevaders Dicey Dungeons
What do dice determine? Dice results determine which columns on the invasion grid score; the official listing also describes dice manipulation. Rolls activate equipment during turn-based roguelike encounters.
Where does positioning matter? Units are built and arranged on a grid, with a six-column scoring structure described by PC Gamer. The documented focus is fighter and equipment configuration rather than a six-column scoring board.
How is randomness managed? Chrono and Budge are named resources for manipulating dice; PC Gamer describes shifting and rerolling. Exact roll-control options vary by equipment and fighter; the verified comparison is that dice are assigned to equipment actions.
Where does a run’s build strategy live? Commanders, perks, artifacts, units, placement, and synergies that grow a scoring engine. Six fighters and the equipment-driven dungeon progression.
Documented platforms Steam; developer community posts also report Steam Deck Verified and digital Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 availability. Steam, itch.io, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, iOS, and Android are linked from the official site.

Neither column is a quality score. It tells you which game’s decisions are likely to feel familiar and which will feel new.

Other dice-based roguelikes to investigate

Searches for games like Dicevaders also surface Slice & Dice, Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles, Diceomancer, and Die in the Dungeon. They are sensible discovery leads, but the available references do not verify each title’s current platform list, mechanics, pricing, or edition through its own primary store page. Look them up as candidates rather than treating the names as a confirmed feature comparison.

How to verify one of these candidates quickly

  1. Open the developer or publisher’s current store page and confirm that the game is still sold for your platform and region.
  2. Read the description for the role of dice: equipment activation, attacks, resource generation, board scoring, or another system.
  3. Check whether the game offers rerolls, value changes, extra dice, or only indirect build effects that reduce bad outcomes.
  4. Identify where a run’s permanent decisions accumulate: party members, equipment, cards, map choices, unit placement, or another layer.
  5. Check the date of the latest update and the edition you are buying before relying on a feature mentioned in an older guide.

This process matters because a title can share the “dice roguelike” label while asking you to make decisions in a completely different order from Dicevaders.

  1. Name the moment you want more of. Was it arranging units, rescuing a bad roll with Chrono or Budge, combining artifacts and perks, or watching a particular result activate a powerful action?
  2. Choose the matching design axis. Board preparation points toward Dicevaders-like tactical placement; equipment activation points toward Dicey Dungeons; broad candidate searches require checking each game’s own description.
  3. Decide how much novelty you want. Dicey Dungeons changes the board problem into an equipment-and-fighter problem. Returning to Dicevaders or seeking another placement-heavy title preserves more of the original mental model.
  4. Check access before committing. Platform support is not the same as cross-platform ownership. A game bought on Steam does not automatically grant a Switch, Xbox, iOS, or Android copy.
  5. Recheck volatile information. Prices, discounts, storefront review counts, platform listings, Steam Deck status, and update plans can change after a guide is published.

Platforms, updates, and what to recheck

Steam lists Dicevaders as released on September 29, 2026. Developer community posts report that it is Steam Deck Verified and digitally available on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, while also documenting early balance patches and a roadmap for additional updates. Those are time-sensitive status claims, so confirm them in the current developer announcements before purchasing or recommending a specific version. Check the developer’s Steam community news.

The Steam page may show a live review score, review count, sale price, or discount. Such figures are storefront snapshots, not durable statistics; they should be checked and dated at the moment you publish a buying guide. The same rule applies to Dicey Dungeons’ platform links and any physical-edition stock.

What to look for in a genuinely similar game

A useful comparison begins with the function of the die, not the game’s art style or the word “roguelike” in its description. Use this checklist when evaluating a new release:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Dice function: Do results select locations, activate equipment, determine attacks, or generate resources?
  • Control tools: Can you reroll, shift a value, add dice, lock a result, or make a build that reduces dependence on one number?
  • Spatial decisions: Does placing a unit, card, or object change what a future roll can score?
  • Build location: Are the important combinations made from units, artifacts, equipment, cards, party members, or upgrades?
  • Run feedback: Does a good choice improve one turn, or does it create a compounding engine that changes later decisions?
  • Failure pressure: Can a bad roll be mitigated by resources, or does the game expect you to accept high variance as part of the challenge?

Dicevaders scores high on board placement, scoring-column control, and run-long unit/artifact synergies. Dicey Dungeons is the clearer match for equipment activation. The other candidate titles need their current primary listings checked against this same list before anyone can responsibly describe them as close mechanical substitutes.

Bottom line: which game should you try?

Play Dicey Dungeons next if your favorite Dicevaders feature is using a roll to power a specific piece of equipment in a turn-based encounter. Stay with Dicevaders when the appeal is the rarer combination of a six-column scoring board, tactical unit placement, dice manipulation through Chrono and Budge, and escalating commander, perk, artifact, and unit synergies. Investigate Slice & Dice, Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles, Diceomancer, and Die in the Dungeon as leads, but verify their current mechanics and availability before treating any of them as a direct recommendation.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
