If you want another party-based, turn-based fantasy adventure after Final Fantasy IX, start with Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. It is the clearest match in this shortlist for a standalone journey with companions, an explorable world and turn-based battles. Choose Bravely Default II if you want deeper control over party roles and turn economy, or Octopath Traveler if several separate character stories appeal more than one shared party narrative.

There is no single game that reproduces every quality a player might mean by “like FFIX.” These recommendations share specific features, not necessarily the same tone, storytelling or overall design.

Which game should you play after Final Fantasy IX?

Game What it shares Key difference Best fit if you want…
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition A standalone fantasy RPG with companions, an explorable world and turn-based combat, according to Square Enix. The publisher’s description supports those shared genre features, but does not establish a direct match to FFIX’s writing or tone. A substantial, party-led fantasy journey.
Bravely Default II Four heroes on a fantasy adventure, customizable jobs and turn-based battles. Its Brave/Default system makes turn economy central: spend future actions to do more now, or bank actions while reducing incoming damage. Planning party roles and weighing risk against reward.
Octopath Traveler Turn-based battles, exploration, side quests and character-focused stories. It follows eight travelers with their own stories, rather than presenting a conventional single-lead party narrative. Several character routes and HD-2D presentation.

Dragon Quest XI S: the clearest party-fantasy follow-up

Dragon Quest XI S is the safest first pick if the appeal of your next RPG is a fantasy setting, companions, exploration and turn-based combat in one standalone adventure. Those are the points Square Enix’s game description confirms; it does not promise that the game will feel like FFIX in characterization, humor or emotional tone. Treat it as a match for the broad adventure shape, not a substitute for every element of the original.

Platform and regional availability can change. Square Enix’s announcement for the Definitive Edition, published in 2020, listed PS4, Xbox One, Steam and the Epic Games Store at that time. That historical list is not proof of current availability, inventory or identical regional catalogs. Check the store for your platform and region before choosing an edition: Square Enix’s listing.

#1 Best Overall
FINAL FANTASY IX - Nintendo Switch
  • Selling over five million copies since its release in 2000, FINAL FANTASY IX proudly returns on Nintendo Switch!
  • Experience the adventure once again with characters and pre-rendered movies featured in high definition, as well as a new booster system with a selection of various modes such as "high speed" or "no encounters"!
  • Abilities - Learn new abilities by equipping items. When fully mastered, these abilities can be used even without equipping items, allowing for nearly endless customization options.
  • Trance - Fill your Trance gauge as you sustain hits in battle. When fully charged, your characters will enter Trance mode, granting them powerful new skills!
  • Synthesis - Never let items go to waste. Combine two items or pieces of equipment together and make better, stronger items!

Bravely Default II: choose this for party tactics

Bravely Default II is the pick for players who want to shape a four-hero team and think carefully about when to act. Its signature system revolves around two opposing choices:

  • Brave: spend future actions to take multiple actions in the present, accepting that you may have fewer turns afterward.
  • Default: hold an action for later while reducing damage received, then spend the accumulated opportunity when the timing is right.

Customizable jobs let you adjust characters’ roles. The result is a more explicitly tactical relationship between party setup and turn timing than the broad “turn-based battles” description alone suggests. Nintendo’s product description frames battles as a balance between safe and riskier strategies; it is official product copy, not a quotation from a named individual.

Octopath Traveler: eight stories instead of one shared party arc

Octopath Traveler is worth considering if you like exploring a fantasy world through multiple characters’ journeys. It features eight travelers, each with an individual story, alongside turn-based battles and side quests. That structure is its biggest distinction from a conventional party-led story: do not choose it expecting the same kind of continuously shared narrative you may be seeking from FFIX.

Nintendo’s listing for Octopath Traveler II says the first Octopath Traveler, initially released in 2018, sold over 3 million copies worldwide. The page does not date that sales total, and the number refers to the first game—not current franchise sales. The official Nintendo listing also provides a useful entry point for checking the series’ current store information. A Square Enix bundle announcement from June 2024 listed console and PC platforms, but that dated announcement does not guarantee today’s regional catalog or stock: Square Enix’s announcement.

  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Dark times have spread over the world of Gaia.
  • Four separate governing nations, some blinded by their short-sighted greed.
  • Some persevering in the name of justice, are battling on and off in a deadly game for power.
  • One kingdom, that of Lindblum, headed by the honorable and trustworthy Regent Cid, finally decides to take a stand against the unspeakable massacres by the troops of Alexandria.

SaGa: an adjacent choice for nonlinear exploration

If the quality you want most is freedom to explore and make choices rather than a close match for FFIX’s party-and-story structure, consider the SaGa franchise. Square Enix describes it in terms of non-linear exploration and player choice, which makes it an adjacent alternative rather than the nearest fit for a party-led fantasy adventure. Browse the publisher’s SaGa series catalog to see which titles are available for your platform and region.

Choose by the part of FFIX you want more of

  • Fantasy companions and a complete adventure: begin with Dragon Quest XI S.
  • Turn-by-turn planning and adjustable party roles: pick Bravely Default II.
  • Several protagonists and separate character stories: try Octopath Traveler.
  • Nonlinear exploration and player choice: look at SaGa, knowing it is a looser structural match.

Before buying, verify the exact edition, platform and regional store listing. The available evidence supports these games as feature-based recommendations; it does not establish one as a direct match for every aspect of FFIX.
