Games Like Hanno: The Best Family-Friendly Alternatives to a Magical Boy-and-Elephant Adventure

The closest family-friendly substitute for Hanno: A Magical Tale is The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on Switch. It best matches the colorful exploration, staged world-opening and puzzle-dungeon structure. For a younger child who needs the simplest first RPG, choose Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee!. Dragon Quest Treasures and Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time are better for low-pressure discovery and creative play, while Ni no Kuni II, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy IX suit older children who can handle heavier themes.

Hanno itself is not playable yet. One Way Eleven’s 16 October 2026 announcement plans a PC release for 2027, while its Steam listing still gives the date as “To be announced.” The alternatives below give families something to play now, organized by the part of the boy-and-elephant concept that matters most to them.

What makes Hanno different?

Hanno: A Magical Tale follows Vimal, an orphaned boy who finds a wounded baby elephant named Hanno. Their relationship is not just a story premise: exploration, puzzles and combat are designed around their bond, and some sections let you control Hanno directly. The fictional Ashar setting draws inspiration from South and Southeast Asia.

Creative Director Pedro Campos describes the central rule this way: “In our game, the magic belongs to the elephant and it only works while the boy carries him. We wanted a companion you can’t do without and who can’t do without you.” That makes Hanno a fairly specific target for comparison. A substitute can match its puzzles, gentle tone, animal companionship or low-pressure exploration, but no game in this list reproduces every part of that two-character design.

The best alternatives, explained

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening — closest all-round match

If your child wants to roam, solve puzzles and gradually open a world, start here. The Switch remake uses a colorful, approachable presentation and organizes its main challenges around puzzle dungeons. The adventure has a clear sense of progression: new discoveries make previously blocked or confusing areas understandable, which gives children a satisfying reason to revisit places.

It does not reproduce Hanno’s two-way dependence or elephant magic. Link is a single hero, so the emotional center is exploration rather than caring for a companion. That difference matters if the animal relationship is the feature your family is waiting for; it matters much less if the priority is a gentle-looking adventure with substantial puzzles.

GamesRadar’s guidance places it among approachable games for children but notes that some areas can still be challenging. An adult may need to help with a difficult dungeon or explain a puzzle without taking over. The ESRB E and PEGI 7 ratings make it the broadest fit for families choosing from the more adventure-focused options here.

  • Choose it for: puzzle-solving, colorful exploration and a classic adventure structure.
  • Watch for: occasional difficulty spikes despite the friendly presentation.
  • Platform: Nintendo Switch.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! — easiest first RPG

These two Switch versions are the most immediately teachable options for a child who has not played an RPG. The setting is bright Kanto, the battles are clearly presented, and the catching loop gives the player a repeated activity with understandable goals. Choosing Pikachu or Eevee supplies a named partner, so the games provide more of a companion feeling than Link’s Awakening, even though the relationship is different from Vimal and Hanno’s shared abilities.

The structure is less puzzle-centered than Hanno. Progress comes primarily from exploring the region, learning how battles work and building a collection. That makes the games a good answer to “What can my child play while waiting?” when the child values a friendly creature and simple rules more than dungeon design.

Both versions carry ESRB E and PEGI 7 guidance. They are on Switch, and the choice between Pikachu and Eevee is mainly a preference about which partner and version presentation your child likes.

Dragon Quest Treasures — low-pressure wandering with monsters

Dragon Quest Treasures is a strong choice when the appeal is discovering a world at a child’s pace. Its child protagonists, monster recruiting and loose “wander and discover” structure make the journey feel less like a tightly ordered campaign and more like a sequence of curiosities. The monster focus gives families a clear emotional link to Hanno’s animal companionship, although the design is based on recruiting a roster rather than relying on one indispensable elephant partner.

The game’s low-pressure approach is useful for children who dislike punishing combat or strict failure states. It also gives siblings or parents an easy conversation point: which creatures to recruit, where to explore next and what treasure to seek. The trade-off is that its objectives may feel less explicit than a traditional dungeon-by-dungeon adventure.

It is rated ESRB E10 and PEGI 7, and is listed for Switch and PC. Those ratings make it a reasonable bridge between the very young-friendly choices and the older-child RPGs below.

  • Choose it for: monster companionship, relaxed exploration and a child-led sense of discovery.
  • Watch for: a looser structure if your child prefers clearly signposted puzzles.
  • Platforms: Nintendo Switch and PC.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time — best for creative families

This is the most flexible substitute for families who interpret Hanno as an invitation to make a world their own. Alongside questing, it includes citybuilding, terrain shaping and furniture collection, with optional co-op. Those systems shift the emphasis from simply reaching the next story beat to deciding how to develop spaces and what activities to pursue.

There is no single bonded-animal mechanic identified for Fantasy Life i, so it is not the closest match to Vimal and Hanno emotionally. Its strength is agency: a child can spend time on creative projects, explore or follow quests rather than being pushed through one narrow route. That makes it especially useful for mixed-age households in which one player wants action and another prefers building and customization.

The game is rated ESRB E10 and PEGI 7. Listed platforms are PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X. Because platform editions and availability can change, verify that the version you want is sold in your region.

  • Choose it for: building, shaping terrain, collecting furniture and optional co-op.
  • Watch for: a broader activity sandbox rather than a focused boy-and-animal story.
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership — forgiving teamwork and short sessions

Mario & Luigi: Brothership suits families looking for a humorous adventure that can be played in manageable pieces. It combines sea travel and exploration with timing-based combat. The combat is forgiving when children miss inputs, which lowers the frustration that can make action RPGs difficult for a first-time player.

The relationship here is a sibling partnership rather than an animal bond. That still gives the game a two-character flavor: success comes from coordinating the brothers’ actions, not from managing one hero alone. It is therefore a good thematic alternative when the important idea is “two characters need each other,” but not when the child specifically wants a magical creature.

Its ESRB E and PEGI 7 ratings place it among the youngest-friendly recommendations in this guide. It is listed for Switch.

  • Choose it for: humor, sea-going exploration and forgiving timing mechanics.
  • Watch for: the relationship is sibling teamwork, not a companion-animal story.
  • Platform: Nintendo Switch.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom — closest fairytale-animation atmosphere for older children

If the visual and emotional target is a warm animated fairytale, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is the strongest match among the older-rated games. Its presentation is gentler than its rating might suggest, but the game carries heavier themes than the E and E10 recommendations. It is better suited to an older child who can follow a more involved story and discuss difficult moments with an adult.

The game does not center on one boy and one animal whose abilities are inseparable. Its appeal comes from a broader cast and a story-led fantasy journey. That makes it a mood match rather than a mechanical one: choose it for the feeling of animated kingdoms and earnest adventure, not for a Hanno-style companion system.

It is rated ESRB T and PEGI 12. The listed platforms are PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X. The T/12 guidance is the reason it belongs after the E10 choices in a family play queue, even if your child is comfortable with cartoon combat.

  • Choose it for: fairytale-animation mood and a richer story for older children.
  • Watch for: heavier themes and a higher age recommendation.
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5? No, the listed platforms are PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix — for children who already love Disney worlds

This collection is a good fit when Disney settings are the main attraction. It follows a young hero through a crossover of Disney and Final Fantasy worlds and uses action combat rather than the slower, menu-driven structure of many traditional RPGs. The recognizable worlds can make the first hours inviting for a child who already knows the characters.

The major caution is narrative complexity. The crossover premise becomes difficult to follow, especially when several games and versions are considered together. A child can enjoy individual worlds without understanding every connection, but families should not expect the clean, self-contained relationship that defines Hanno.

  • Choose it for: Disney settings, a young hero and real-time action combat.
  • Watch for: a complicated overarching story and the PEGI 12 guidance.
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch.

Final Fantasy IX — a storybook RPG that grows darker

Final Fantasy IX is the most traditional role-playing choice in this group and the best fit for an older child who values story, character relationships and a fairytale-like presentation. It is not a substitute for Hanno’s animal partnership; its emotional focus is the party and the journey. Its early storybook tone can appeal to children who like imaginative worlds, while its later material requires more parental judgment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game carries ESRB T and PEGI 12 guidance. Those ratings reflect the darker themes that emerge as the adventure progresses, so the charming presentation should not be treated as an all-ages signal. It is listed for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch.

  • Choose it for: a deep, fairytale-like RPG story for older children.
  • Watch for: later dark themes and a less immediately accessible structure than the E-rated games.
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch.

Which game should you choose?

If puzzles matter most

Pick Link’s Awakening. It is the only recommendation here specifically identified with staged world opening and puzzle dungeons, so it most directly answers a child asking for the problem-solving side of Hanno.

If your child has never played an RPG

Pick Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee!. The catching loop and clearly explained battles provide a gentle introduction without requiring the child to understand a complicated story or a large set of systems immediately.

If your child wants animals and discovery

Pick Dragon Quest Treasures. Recruiting monsters gives the strongest creature-centered alternative, while its low-pressure wandering structure keeps the experience relaxed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If building is more exciting than fighting

Pick Fantasy Life i. Citybuilding, terrain shaping and furniture collection let a child create goals beyond combat, and optional co-op can make it a family activity.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

If teamwork is the key appeal

Pick Mario & Luigi: Brothership. Its two-character partnership and forgiving timing-based combat preserve the idea that progress depends on working together, even though the partners are brothers rather than a boy and an elephant.

If the fairytale mood matters more than the rating

For an older child, choose Ni no Kuni II first, then consider Final Fantasy IX or Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix according to taste. Ni no Kuni II is the closest in animated-fairytale presentation; Final Fantasy IX is the most storybook-like traditional RPG; Kingdom Hearts is the obvious choice for a Disney fan who is ready for a more complicated premise.

Age ratings and family planning

The ratings in the table are guidance, not a substitute for knowing your child. The E and PEGI 7 choices are the safest starting point for younger players, but difficulty still varies: Link’s Awakening can challenge children in some areas, while Mario & Luigi: Brothership is designed to be forgiving when timing inputs are missed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ESRB E10 and PEGI 7 titles such as Dragon Quest Treasures and Fantasy Life i add systems and freedom without automatically becoming unsuitable for younger children. The T or PEGI 12 recommendations deserve a separate conversation about themes, not just a check of whether the combat looks cartoonish. Ni no Kuni II, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy IX all fit older children, but for different reasons: heavier themes, narrative complexity or darker later material.

Finally, the platform list is a snapshot of the editions identified for this comparison. Store availability, regional ratings and edition names can change. Confirm the current rating and platform listing for your country before purchase, especially for games that appear on several generations of hardware.

When can you play Hanno?

One Way Eleven’s 16 October 2026 press release plans a PC release for 2027, but Steam still lists the release date as “To be announced.” There is therefore no confirmed day on which families can switch from an alternative to the finished game. Until a date is posted, Link’s Awakening is the safest all-round stand-in, Pokémon: Let’s Go is the easiest starting point, and Dragon Quest Treasures is the closest low-pressure creature-focused option.
