If Hope in the City appeals because you want to sketch evidence, connect thoughts and uncover a missing-person mystery through a teenage artist’s eyes, the best alternatives are not all traditional detective games. Some emphasize deduction, some atmosphere and choice, and others the emotional viewpoint of a young woman in an unsettling place.
This guide matches each recommendation to the part of Hope in the City you want to preserve: clue combination, nonlinear investigation, noir mood, female or teenage protagonists, puzzle density, or story-first exploration.

What makes Hope in the City different?
Hope in the City is an upcoming nonlinear narrative mystery adventure from Lofty Sky Entertainment Inc. and NAGA Games. You play Hope Song, a 17-year-old aspiring artist who returns home and discovers that her parents are missing. Instead of treating investigation as a sequence of conventional detective menus, the game makes Hope’s sketches part of the evidence system: you observe details, record them as drawings, combine thoughts and reach new insights or breakthroughs.
That structure matters because Hope is not presented as a professional investigator. Her artistic perspective determines what counts as evidence and how the player interprets it. Shenyang, China, is also intended to function as more than scenery; the city contributes to the game’s atmosphere and sense of place. Steam’s tags point to mystery, investigation, detective play, nonlinear storytelling, puzzle solving, noir, cinematic presentation, emotional storytelling, exploration and choices that matter.

Best for connecting clues and earning breakthroughs
The Case of the Golden Idol
Choose this first if the most important part of Hope in the City is turning visual observations into a coherent explanation. Each case presents a crime scene that you can inspect at your own pace. You identify names, objects, actions and relationships, then enter a theory about what happened. The game does not simply ask you to find a highlighted item; it asks you to decide which details matter and how they fit together.
Its historical setting and deliberately stylized presentation are far removed from Hope’s contemporary Shenyang, but the mental rhythm is close: observe, record, connect and test an interpretation. Cases are self-contained, making it easy to play one investigation at a time. The trade-off is that there is no equivalent to Hope’s teenage artist perspective or family-driven emotional arc. This is the recommendation for players who want the deduction layer more than the character drama.
Return of the Obra Dinn
Return of the Obra Dinn is the strongest alternative for demanding, evidence-led reasoning. You board a ship whose crew has died or disappeared and reconstruct events from brief supernatural glimpses of the past. The central task is to identify people, causes of death and the sequence of incidents. Every correct conclusion narrows the remaining possibilities, so a breakthrough usually comes from noticing a small visual or contextual link rather than solving a conventional riddle.
The one-bit monochrome art direction creates a stark, almost archival atmosphere instead of Hope’s cinematic urban noir. You also play an adult insurance investigator, not an artist searching for missing parents. Expect a steeper learning curve: the game rarely tells you when you are close, and several conclusions require cross-referencing clues discovered hours earlier. Pick it when you want the most rigorous version of the observe-and-connect loop.

Her Story
Her Story turns investigation into information retrieval. You search a database of filmed police interviews by entering words, watch the clips that match, and use phrases from those clips to uncover more material. The chronology is fragmented, so you build your own understanding of the central case from partial statements, contradictions and repeated details.
This is a quieter alternative than Hope in the City. There is no explorable city, sketchbook or inventory, and the interface deliberately limits how much of the archive you can see at once. What carries over is the feeling that progress comes from recognizing a connection that was present all along. It suits players who enjoy interpretation and unreliable testimony more than hand-operated puzzles.
Best for nonlinear stories assembled from fragments
Telling Lies
Telling Lies expands the searchable-video idea into a larger web of conversations. You query a database, watch portions of calls and meetings, and decide which fragments belong together. The narrative is not delivered in a fixed order; your search terms determine which people and topics you encounter first.
Its modern realism and emphasis on performance make it a good choice if you want a story that feels like assembling a case file from human evidence. It is less tactile than Hope’s sketches and offers fewer traditional puzzles. The challenge is editorial: deciding what to search next, which speaker to trust and when you have enough context to interpret a scene. Choose it for nonlinear storytelling and character observation, not for an object-combination system.
Paradise Killer
Paradise Killer gives investigation a broad, explorable environment. You move through a surreal island, locate physical evidence, interview unusual residents and decide how to present the case. The game allows you to pursue leads in a flexible order, so your eventual conclusions depend on how thoroughly you explore and which testimony you consider credible.

The tone is louder and stranger than Hope in the City’s grounded urban mystery, with neon imagery and an eccentric cast replacing a family disappearance in Shenyang. Its strongest overlap is structural: the setting itself is a source of clues, and the player is trusted to make connections rather than follow a single hallway of objectives. It is a good fit if you want the city-sized investigation to be as important as the final explanation.

Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium is the best choice for readers who value atmosphere, interiority and consequence over conventional puzzle interfaces. You play a detective whose thoughts, skills and conversations shape the investigation. Observing a location can trigger competing interpretations; dialogue can open or close avenues of inquiry; and choices influence both the case and the protagonist’s identity.
The game is text-heavy and substantially longer than a compact mystery adventure. Its systems are built around role-playing rather than sketching, and its politics and personal crises can dominate a session. Nevertheless, it shares Hope’s interest in a city that reflects the people living in it and in a protagonist whose perspective changes what the player notices. Select it when emotional and social investigation matter as much as physical clues.
Best for a teenage or female protagonist with strong emotional stakes
Life is Strange
Life is Strange is the closest recommendation if Hope’s age, artistic identity and relationships are your priority. Its protagonist, Max Caulfield, is a teenage photographer whose ability to rewind events changes how she explores a mystery and handles conversations. Photography is not the same as Hope’s sketch-based evidence system, but both games make a young woman’s way of seeing central to play.
The structure is episodic and choice-driven. You investigate a disappearance while navigating friendships, school life and consequences that can arrive much later. Puzzles are generally lighter than in a deduction-focused mystery, and the emotional relationships are as important as solving the central case. Pick it for character-led suspense and meaningful decisions rather than for dense logic chains.

Oxenfree
Oxenfree follows a group of teenagers exploring an isolated island where radio signals and supernatural events distort reality. Dialogue choices occur while characters move, so conversations feel continuous rather than separated into menu screens. A radio is both a tool for interacting with the environment and a source of unsettling discoveries.
Like Hope in the City, it treats place as an active part of the mood and lets a young protagonist’s relationships shape the experience. Its mystery is more supernatural and its playtime shorter, with exploration and conversation carrying more weight than formal clue combination. It is ideal when you want atmospheric wandering, a teenage cast and replayable dialogue outcomes.
Jenny LeClue – Detectivu
Jenny LeClue – Detectivu centers on a young girl who wants to become a detective in a stylized small-town world. You inspect locations, question residents and follow a murder investigation while the game plays with the idea that a story is being written around its heroine. The tone is lighter and more playful than Hope’s missing-parents premise.
The useful overlap is viewpoint: the protagonist’s age, curiosity and assumptions determine how the mystery unfolds. It is more forgiving than Return of the Obra Dinn and more overtly traditional than Her Story. Choose it for an approachable female-led investigation with a strong sense of authored narrative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest for classic point-and-click puzzle solving
Tangle Tower
Tangle Tower is the most accessible pick for a conventional mansion mystery. You investigate a suspicious death by searching rooms, questioning a colorful group of suspects and combining items to solve environmental puzzles. The detective work is clearly structured, so players who dislike opaque deduction can usually tell what kind of information a scene is asking for.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The comic art direction and brisk dialogue make it much lighter than Hope’s noir and emotional framing. There is also no equivalent to sketching or a nonlinear city investigation. Its value is practical: it delivers the satisfying sequence of clue, puzzle and explanation without demanding that you maintain a large mental model of every possibility.
The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow
The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow combines point-and-click investigation with folk horror. You play Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian traveling to a remote English village to investigate an unusual burial mound. Conversations, item use and environmental details gradually reveal why the local community is so guarded.
This is a slower and more unsettling experience than the other recommendations. The protagonist is an adult outsider rather than a teenager, but the investigative perspective is personal and the landscape carries narrative weight. Choose it if the strongest part of Hope’s premise for you is an outsider reading a place, its history and its silences.

Use the following decision points instead of treating every narrative adventure as interchangeable:
- You want explicit deduction: Start with The Case of the Golden Idol for case-based logic or Return of the Obra Dinn for a harder, more interconnected investigation.
- You want to search testimony: Choose Her Story for a compact archive or Telling Lies for a broader web of conversations.
- You want a setting that behaves like evidence: Pick Paradise Killer for open exploration or Disco Elysium for a city shaped by dialogue, ideology and memory.
- You want a teenage female lead: Life is Strange offers the closest emotional and age-based match; Oxenfree is better for a supernatural ensemble; Jenny LeClue – Detectivu is the gentlest detective option.
- You want traditional puzzles: Select Tangle Tower for approachable progression or The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow for slower, darker exploration.
- You want the shortest commitment: The archive-based games and Oxenfree generally move faster than the open-ended investigations and role-playing adventures.
- You want the most demanding reasoning: Expect the largest mental workload from Return of the Obra Dinn and The Case of the Golden Idol; neither is designed to provide constant confirmation.
What to know before Hope in the City launches
Hope in the City is currently listed as not yet available. Steam gives a planned release date of November 11, 2026. An official community announcement says the game launches on November 10, 2026 for Steam and Xbox, with Xbox available on day one. Because those dates differ by one day, treat the launch date as unresolved and check the current store listing immediately before buying or planning coverage.
The announced platforms are Steam and Xbox. No physical edition, artbook, accessory or other dedicated merchandise has been established, so the relevant preparation is simply choosing the investigation style you want and checking the final platform listing. The game’s defining promise remains the combination of observation, sketching, thought-linking and breakthroughs in a Shenyang-set story about Hope Song’s missing parents.
A sensible play order
- Begin with Life is Strange if you want to test whether a teenage female perspective and emotional mystery are the main draw.
- Play The Case of the Golden Idol if you want to practice turning observations into explicit theories.
- Move to Her Story or Telling Lies when you prefer discovering narrative structure through search rather than walking through a conventional level.
- Choose Paradise Killer or Disco Elysium for a larger setting where exploration, social context and interpretation matter.
- Finish with Return of the Obra Dinn if you want the most rigorous clue network and are comfortable solving without frequent hints.
That order moves from character-led accessibility to increasingly demanding deduction. It also makes clear what Hope in the City is attempting to combine: the emotional immediacy of a young protagonist, the observational discipline of a detective game, and a city whose atmosphere is part of the evidence.
