If Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty stayed with you because it made you question the hero, the briefing, the interface and even your role as the player, start with The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, Spec Ops: The Line, NieR: Automata, Undertale and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!. They do not all resemble MGS2 mechanically. They resemble it where it matters: each turns an expectation you brought to the game into part of the subject.
What makes a game genuinely like Metal Gear Solid 2?
A conventional stealth recommendation is not necessarily a good MGS2 recommendation. The useful comparison is expectation manipulation: a game establishes a role, viewpoint or set of rules, then makes you reconsider why you trusted it.

MGS2 is an unusually clear benchmark because its subversion happens at several layers at once. Pre-release material presented Solid Snake as the central hero, while the finished game places most of its hours with Raiden. The switch is not merely a surprise in casting. The PlayStation Blog’s 2023 retrospective connects it to the game’s themes of information manipulation and unstable perceptions of reality. Hideo Kojima’s 2012 BAFTA lecture adds a practical reason for Raiden: a new protagonist gave newcomers a way into the series without requiring them to play as an already legendary hero.

The game also makes its delivery systems suspicious. Mission briefings, codec conversations, virtual training, enemy intelligence and the rules of the simulation all become things you have to interpret rather than automatically obey. A University of California analysis of MGS2’s fourth-wall breaks argues that these moments force players to confront their assumptions about where a game ends and the player begins. Konami’s official introduction describes the goal as making Metal Gear more than pure action, with a professionally woven story and a strong theme. That combination—storytelling ambition expressed through the player’s expectations—is the target for the recommendations below.

Games to play after MGS2
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe — when you want the player addressed directly
Davey Wreden’s office labyrinth begins with a familiar setup: a silent employee, an empty workplace and a narrator explaining what should happen next. The important word is “should.” Walking through a different door, waiting in a room or refusing an instruction can turn the narration into an argument with your decision.
Like MGS2, it treats the expected player path as material. The narrator sounds like an authority, but his confidence rises and falls according to what you do. Repetition is not a reset button that erases meaning; it is evidence that the game is watching how you interpret choice. The expanded Ultra Deluxe edition adds further layers of commentary on sequels, new content and audience expectation, making it particularly apt for someone interested in how a game reacts to its own reputation.
- Perspective disruption: You are not replacing one hero with another; you are discovering that “the protagonist’s story” may be a narration imposed on your movement.
- Information reliability: The narrator supplies information constantly, yet every contradiction makes you assess his motives.
- Player-system awareness: Doors, menus, achievements and repeated routes become part of the conversation.
Choose this first if the part of MGS2 you remember most vividly is being spoken to, corrected or baited by the game itself.

This third-person military shooter initially presents itself through the language of the genre: a squad, a mission and objectives that appear to justify the next firefight. Its subversion comes from asking what those conventions conceal. The protagonist’s understanding of events, the mission framing and the player’s willingness to follow orders grow increasingly difficult to separate.
The game’s force comes from productive dissonance. You perform actions that a shooter has trained you to regard as routine, while the story changes what those actions mean. It is therefore closer to MGS2’s thematic method than to a simple plot twist: the mechanics make you participate in the assumptions being criticized.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Perspective disruption: The expected competent-soldier fantasy becomes an unreliable viewpoint.
- Information reliability: Briefings and apparent objectives do not provide a neutral account of the situation.
- Mechanical fit: Shooting remains mechanically familiar, which is precisely why the later reinterpretation has weight.
Play it when you want a game that interrogates the military-action vocabulary MGS2 helped popularize. Its subject matter includes intense violence and psychological distress, so it is not a light follow-up.
NieR: Automata — when the second playthrough changes the first
NieR: Automata uses stylish action as an entry point, then makes route structure part of its argument. The first major campaign gives you a coherent perspective and apparent explanations for the war between androids and machines. Subsequent routes do not simply add side material: they revisit events from other viewpoints and expose how much the initial account left out.
That structure matches MGS2’s interest in controlled information, but its payoff is more cumulative. Character identity, historical records and the meaning of “human” are revised over hours of play. The interface and save system eventually become narratively significant as well; reaching the final resolution asks you to consider what your progress means and whether you would surrender it to help another player.
- Perspective disruption: Playable characters and route order alter the interpretation of scenes you thought you understood.
- Information reliability: Official explanations are partial, political or simply wrong.
- Player-system awareness: Repetition, endings and save data are treated as parts of the story rather than invisible infrastructure.
Do not stop after the first ending if your goal is MGS2-style destabilization. The design assumes that the meaning develops through the later routes.
Undertale — when saving and resetting have consequences
Undertale looks like a compact role-playing game with turn-based battles and a quirky cast. Its central question is whether you accept the usual division between hero, enemy and expendable encounter. You can fight, spare, flee and revisit areas, but the characters’ reactions make those choices feel less like abstract route selection and more like a record of your behavior.

The game’s most MGS2-like move is to treat the player’s control over time as ethically meaningful. A save file suggests that failure can be erased; the fiction asks what it means when someone remembers, suspects or responds to resets. The interface is not outside the narrative. Your intention—whether you are experimenting, pursuing a challenge or trying to see every outcome—becomes part of the reading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Perspective disruption: The “chosen hero” role is never as morally secure as the genre implies.
- Information reliability: Character dialogue and apparent rules change as your history accumulates.
- Type of payoff: The strongest effects come from sustained reinterpretation, not a single reveal.
Play blind if possible. Looking up route conditions beforehand can turn the game’s central uncertainty into a checklist.
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! — when a genre promise becomes a trap
This visual novel begins with school-club routines, dating-sim presentation and cheerful character introductions. That surface is a deliberate invitation to bring genre assumptions into the room. As the structure fractures, the game treats its scripts, character data and software boundaries as story objects.
Its fourth-wall pressure is more explicit than MGS2’s. Characters can acknowledge the program and the person operating it, while menus and files stop feeling like neutral containers. The result is not merely “a dark visual novel”; it is a test of how long you continue to trust a format that has signaled safety and predictability.
- Perspective disruption: The apparent protagonist and romance structure are recontextualized.
- Information reliability: Presentation, character behavior and underlying data contradict the initial premise.
- Player-system awareness: The boundary between game content and the application itself becomes dramatic material.
Read the content warnings before playing. Its horror involves depression, self-harm and suicide, and the tonal contrast is an essential part of the experience.

Inscryption — when the rules are evidence
Inscryption starts as a claustrophobic card game played against an unidentified opponent. Learning the cards and surviving encounters seems like the immediate goal, but the surrounding room, recordings and competing voices steadily undermine the idea that this is a self-contained contest.
The game uses mechanics as clues. Deck construction, card descriptions, challenge modifiers and the presentation outside the match all carry information about who controls the experience. Later shifts in format are most effective when you recognize that the original rules were never just rules; they were a perspective supplied by someone with an agenda.
- Perspective disruption: The player, opponent and apparent game-master roles are repeatedly reassigned.
- Information reliability: Narrators and artifacts offer incompatible accounts.
- Mechanical and thematic fit: Winning, modifying a deck and examining the interface all contribute to the story’s argument.
It is a strong choice if you want MGS2’s suspicion of briefings translated into a game where the rules themselves may be trying to persuade you.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem — when the game simulates a malfunction
This survival-horror game follows protagonists across different historical periods and uses their deteriorating sanity to attack the assumption that the screen is a reliable report. Visual and audio distortions can suggest that the game, television or hardware is failing. The player must decide whether a frightening change is diegetic, mechanical or an intentional deception.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Its direct player-system tricks predate many later meta games, but the design principle aligns closely with MGS2’s fourth-wall pressure: your knowledge of how games normally work becomes a vulnerability. Multiple protagonists also prevent one viewpoint from becoming a complete explanation of the world.

| If MGS2 made you question… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Who the real protagonist is | NieR: Automata | Route changes and playable viewpoints revise the meaning of earlier events. |
| Whether a narrator or briefing is truthful | The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe or Inscryption | Both make authority figures part of the problem, though one is conversational and the other systemic. |
| Whether your actions are morally neutral | Undertale or Spec Ops: The Line | They use familiar actions to expose the assumptions behind them. |
| Where the game ends and the player begins | Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! or Eternal Darkness | They address software, hardware and the player’s trust in the screen directly. |
| Whether a surprise can be sustained beyond one twist | NieR: Automata or Inscryption | Their later structures keep reinterpreting what came before. |
A practical play order
- Start with The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe for the clearest, least mechanically demanding lesson in player expectation.
- Move to Spec Ops: The Line if you want a direct critique of military-action habits and are comfortable with heavy material.
- Choose Undertale for a compact experiment in memory, mercy and the ethics of resetting.
- Play NieR: Automata through its later routes when you want a large-scale reinterpretation involving identity, history and the save system.
- Use Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! for explicit fourth-wall horror, with its content warnings in mind.
- Finish with Inscryption or Eternal Darkness if you want the rules, interface or apparent hardware behavior to become unreliable.
This order moves from openly conversational meta-fiction to games whose destabilization is embedded in route structure, genre habit or simulated malfunction. You can instead choose by the table above; there is no requirement that every game be played in release order.
What to look for while playing
To get the most from these games, separate a surprise from a genuine challenge to your assumptions. Ask four questions after a major reveal or rule change:
- What did the game train me to expect? Identify the genre promise, protagonist role or interface convention that made the moment surprising.
- Who supplied that information? A commander, narrator, menu, archive and playable character each have different reasons to be incomplete.
- Did my actions support or contradict the theme? The strongest designs make your ordinary input part of the argument instead of placing the message only in cutscenes.
- What kind of payoff did I receive? A plot twist changes what happened; a sustained reinterpretation changes what earlier play meant; a direct player challenge changes your understanding of your own participation.
Also resist searching for every answer immediately. Spoilers do more damage to these games than to a conventional campaign because the uncertainty is often the intended subject. If you need practical help, look up controls or accessibility settings first and story explanations only after you have reached the point where the game’s own information no longer suffices.
Where to begin with Metal Gear Solid 2 itself
If you have not played MGS2, it remains the clearest demonstration of the design idea behind this list. Look for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in an official collection edition where it is sold in your region, and confirm the current platform, edition and availability before buying. The important experience is not simply stealth action; it is noticing how marketing, protagonist selection, briefings, interfaces and fourth-wall pressure make the player’s expectations part of the drama.
Approach the recommendations with that distinction in mind. A game can share MGS2’s camera, alert phases or military setting and still miss its defining quality. The closest successors are the ones that make you ask, while you are still playing, who is speaking, what you have been taught to believe and what your own actions have allowed the game to say.
