The closest alternative depends on which part of No Man’s Sky you value most. Choose Empyrion – Galactic Survival for the nearest survival-sandbox structure, Space Engineers for serious ship and base engineering, Starfield for a story-led space RPG, Astroneer for approachable cooperative building, Elite Dangerous for spacecraft simulation, or Subnautica for concentrated survival discovery in an alien environment.

Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as “a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” Its blend includes planet hopping, gathering, crafting, base construction, ship travel, space dogfights and combat on planetary surfaces. It is also playable in VR, supports multiplayer through the Space Anomaly for up to 32 players, and continues to receive major updates. The games below reproduce different parts of that formula rather than copying all of it.

Empyrion – Galactic Survival: the closest survival-sandbox match

Empyrion is the most direct choice when your favorite No Man’s Sky activity is landing somewhere hostile, collecting materials, building a foothold and gradually turning a small craft into a larger operation. Eleon Game Studios’ overview combines space and planetary exploration, construction, mining, resource gathering, survival, crafting, and combat on land and in space.

#1 Best Overall
Sale
Starfield: Standard Edition - Xbox Series X
  • Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits
  • Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets
  • Pilot and command the ship of your dreams.

Why it matches

The defining feature is continuity between orbit and the surface. Empyrion’s exploration description specifically presents the ability to orbit a planet, see a mountain and descend to land on that mountain. That makes the transition itself part of play rather than a menu-driven change of location. You can treat a planet as a resource site, a dangerous expedition or the location for a permanent base.

Where it differs

Empyrion is more explicitly a configurable sandbox than a guided space adventure. Expect to spend time deciding how a ship, base or station should function, how to obtain materials and how to survive encounters. The appeal is emergent problem-solving, not a tightly authored space-opera campaign. Its strongest fit is on PC, so check the current edition and system requirements before buying.

Choose Empyrion if

  • You want survival meters, mining, crafting and combat to remain important after reaching space.
  • You want to design and expand ships, planetary bases and orbital stations.
  • You consider seamless-looking space-to-surface travel more important than a cinematic story.

Space Engineers: the best choice for engineering and construction

Keen Software House calls Space Engineers “a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets.” That description explains both its strength and its limitation as a No Man’s Sky alternative: the central question is how to make a machine or structure work.

What you build

Space Engineers is for players who want to design functional ships, machinery and bases rather than merely place decorative modules. Construction decisions have practical consequences. A vehicle must be shaped, powered and equipped for the job you have in mind; a base is an engineered system instead of only a visual home. The game supports single-player play, scenarios and Steam Workshop sharing, giving you both structured starting points and a large pool of player-made designs.

What you give up

The experience is less about being swept through a prewritten space adventure and more about testing ideas. If you want a simple crafting loop, quick travel and constant discoveries, the engineering overhead can feel demanding. If you enjoy solving design problems, that overhead is the point.

Choose Space Engineers if

  • Your priority is designing working spacecraft, vehicles, factories or bases.
  • You like experimenting with systems and sharing or downloading scenarios and workshop creations.
  • You prefer a construction sandbox to a story-led campaign.

Starfield: a story-led space RPG

Starfield is the strongest match for readers who want quests, character progression and authored worlds wrapped in a space-exploration setting. GamesRadar’s February 16, 2026 roundup lists it for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S and presents it as an exploration-focused space RPG.

Why choose it

Starfield gives your journey an RPG structure: you follow quests, develop a character and move through worlds designed by an authoring team. That structure is useful when No Man’s Sky’s open-endedness feels too unbounded or when you want conversations and objectives to tell you what to do next.

Important expectation

Starfield is not a replacement for No Man’s Sky’s continuous survival-crafting loop. The comparison is about space exploration and the freedom to pursue activities, not about reproducing an infinite procedural galaxy with the same resource pressure. It is better suited to players who rank narrative progression above building an elaborate survival settlement.

Rank #2
Starfield (Standard Edition) [Xbox Series X]
  • Includes: Starfield Standard Edition (Disc)
  • Travel to the stars in this next-gen RPG from the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4
  • Create a character according to your imagination and explore the endless expanses in unparalleled freedom
  • The goal of this epic journey? The answer to humanity's greatest question

Choose Starfield if

  • You want a conventional RPG arc with quests and character development.
  • You prefer authored locations and stories to a primarily procedural universe.
  • You are playing on PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S and want a space RPG rather than a construction simulator.

Astroneer: approachable exploration and cooperative building

Astroneer is the gentler recommendation in this group. Comparison coverage places it alongside gathering, crafting and base-building alternatives, with a friendlier, more stylized presentation and lower simulation overhead than Elite Dangerous or Space Engineers.

Its strongest appeal

The game emphasizes exploration and cooperative construction without asking you to master a detailed spacecraft-engineering model. You can gather materials, craft equipment and develop a base while discovering an alien environment. The stylized presentation makes the systems easier to read, and co-op construction gives groups a reason to work on a shared project rather than simply occupy the same world.

Its limits as a substitute

Astroneer is not the pick for realistic piloting, elaborate ship architecture or heavy survival punishment. Its value is accessibility: it preserves the satisfying rhythm of finding resources, making useful tools and expanding a home without the operational complexity associated with a simulation-first game.

Choose Astroneer if

  • You want cooperative exploration and base building that is easy to approach.
  • You prefer a stylized world and lighter simulation demands.
  • You want the gathering-and-crafting rhythm without making ship engineering your main hobby.

Verify the current platforms and edition availability before following a retailer link, because the comparison material does not establish a complete current platform list.

Elite Dangerous: simulation-first space exploration

Elite Dangerous is the specialist choice for players whose favorite part of No Man’s Sky is sitting in a cockpit and deciding where to fly next. Comparison coverage identifies it as a close alternative for piloting a ship and exploring a large galaxy.

What it does better

Its center of gravity is spacecraft operation: navigation, travel and the practical decisions involved in running a ship through a large galaxy. That makes it a stronger fit than No Man’s Sky when you want the journey between destinations to feel like the primary activity rather than a short transition before landing.

What it does not reproduce

Elite Dangerous does not recreate No Man’s Sky’s full on-foot crafting loop. Planetary survival, hand-built bases and surface resource collection are not the reason to choose it. The trade-off is deliberate: you get a more simulation-oriented piloting experience in exchange for less emphasis on building a personal settlement and living on the ground.

Choose Elite Dangerous if

  • You value navigation, ship handling and a large-galaxy scale.
  • You want systems-driven freedom rather than a quest-led RPG.
  • You are comfortable with more operational complexity and less on-foot survival crafting.

Subnautica: concentrated survival discovery

Subnautica is the best alternative when the emotional core you want is resource management, atmosphere and discovering an alien environment under pressure. GamesRadar includes it among No Man’s Sky alternatives, but the setting changes the experience completely: exploration takes place underwater rather than across a broad interplanetary galaxy.

Rank #3
Starfield | Premium Upgrade | Xbox Series X|S & Windows Digital
  • TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
  • EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
  • CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
  • DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
  • LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.

Why it works

Subnautica concentrates the survival loop. You gather what you need, craft equipment and habitats, manage risk and investigate an unfamiliar ecosystem. Because the environment is focused, discoveries can feel more connected and consequential than in a vast procedural galaxy. The result is a strong sense of place and escalating curiosity.

What to expect

There is no equivalent to jumping between many planets, dogfighting in open space or touring an infinite galaxy. The attraction is tension and environmental storytelling inside one alien setting. Choose it when survival discovery matters more than the specific science-fiction fantasy of owning a starship.

Choose Subnautica if

  • You want atmosphere and survival pressure above all else.
  • You enjoy gathering resources, crafting tools and building habitats.
  • You are happy to trade interplanetary scale for a concentrated underwater world.

How to choose in five decisions

  1. Set your main activity. Pick Empyrion for survival across planets, Space Engineers for engineering, Starfield for quests, Astroneer for accessible co-op building, Elite Dangerous for piloting, or Subnautica for focused survival discovery.
  2. Decide whether survival must stay central. Empyrion and Subnautica make resource pressure explicit. Astroneer keeps gathering and crafting approachable. Starfield and Elite Dangerous should be chosen for their RPG or ship-simulation priorities rather than for a matching survival loop.
  3. Choose your construction depth. Space Engineers and Empyrion lead when ships, bases and stations are projects in themselves. Astroneer offers a lighter construction path. Subnautica focuses construction on habitats and survival needs.
  4. Choose authored structure or sandbox freedom. Starfield supplies quests, progression and authored worlds. Empyrion, Space Engineers and Elite Dangerous derive more of their identity from systems and player decisions.
  5. Check how you want to play with others. Astroneer is described as cooperative, Space Engineers supports single-player scenarios and Workshop sharing, and No Man’s Sky itself supports up to 32 players through the Space Anomaly. The available descriptions do not establish equivalent player counts for every alternative, so confirm the current multiplayer mode for your platform before purchase.

Which game is the closest overall?

Empyrion – Galactic Survival is the closest overall match for the specific combination of space travel, planetary landing, mining, crafting, survival, construction and combat. Space Engineers is the better answer if engineering depth matters more than survival atmosphere. Starfield is the better answer if what you really want is an authored RPG in space. Astroneer, Elite Dangerous and Subnautica each preserve a different core pleasure from No Man’s Sky while intentionally narrowing the scope.

No alternative here duplicates No Man’s Sky’s complete package of procedural scale, VR support, 32-player Space Anomaly multiplayer, space dogfighting, planetary combat and continuing major updates. Treat the list as a way to select the loop you want to emphasize, not as a promise of an identical replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a game that completely replaces No Man’s Sky?

No. Empyrion comes closest to the combined space-to-planet survival sandbox, but each alternative gives up at least one major part of No Man’s Sky’s formula, such as procedural scale, on-foot crafting, authored quests or spacecraft simulation.

Which alternative is best for playing with friends?

Astroneer is explicitly positioned around cooperative construction and exploration. Space Engineers supports single-player play, scenarios and Steam Workshop sharing, while the available descriptions do not establish matching player limits for every other title.

Which game should I choose if I dislike complicated simulations?

Astroneer is the most approachable recommendation because it uses a stylized presentation and lower simulation overhead. Subnautica is also focused, but its survival pressure is stronger; Space Engineers and Elite Dangerous demand more systems management.
