Games Like Ocarina of Time: The Best Classic 3D Zelda Alternatives

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Okami HD is the closest broad substitute for Ocarina of Time if you want an authored adventure built around exploration, puzzles and progression tools. Choose Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition for a darker, more combat-heavy version of that structure, or Tunic if secrets, environmental clues and deciphering an in-game manual matter more than a third-person 3D camera. If you want Nintendo’s own follow-up, Majora’s Mask 3D is the natural companion; if you want Ocarina itself with refreshed presentation, play Ocarina of Time 3D.

The right recommendation depends on which part of Ocarina you are trying to recover: dungeon-and-overworld rhythm, lock-on combat, item-driven puzzles, compact-world exploration, or the feeling of discovering a game’s rules for yourself.

What “games like Ocarina of Time” really means

People use “like Ocarina of Time” to describe several different experiences. Separating them prevents a promising recommendation from feeling wrong after an hour.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Dungeon-and-overworld rhythm: You leave a central or regional overworld, enter a themed dungeon, solve layered puzzles, gain a new capability and use it to open previously inaccessible routes.
  • Real-time lock-on combat: Fights are readable and positional, with a focused target, defensive timing and movement around an enemy rather than menu-driven turns.
  • Item-based puzzle solving: A tool changes how you read rooms and the world. Progress comes from recognizing where a new ability applies, not merely from finding a key.
  • Compact fantasy-world discovery: The pleasure comes from learning a tightly authored map, noticing suspicious details and returning to earlier areas with new knowledge.

No non-Zelda game reproduces all four elements exactly. The recommendations below identify the axis on which each one is strongest, then explain the trade-offs in camera, tone, combat and discovery.

At a glance: the strongest alternatives

Game or edition Best match Camera and world presentation Dungeons and puzzles Combat emphasis Discovery style Key qualification
Okami HD Closest overall structure Third-person action-adventure with a distinct, brush-painted visual identity Strong exploration and puzzle emphasis; progression is tool-driven Action combat built around brush mechanics rather than Zelda’s exact system Authored adventure and revisiting places with new abilities It matches the structure and feel, not the camera language or mechanics one-for-one
Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition Darker, combat-forward Zelda-like Third-person fantasy world with heavier action presentation Dungeon traversal and puzzle spaces are important, but the game gives combat more weight Its defining priority; faster and more aggressive than Nintendo’s usual tone Exploration is tied to traversal challenges and loot-driven progression Its balance and presentation are its own rather than a Nintendo imitation
Tunic Secrets, clues and discovery Top-down perspective, not third-person 3D Puzzles are often embedded in the world and in what you learn Present, but not the main reason to choose it Deciphering an in-game manual and reading environmental signals It is a Zelda-inspired alternative, not a camera or movement replacement for Ocarina
Majora’s Mask 3D Another classic 3D Zelda First-party Nintendo 3DS remake of the Nintendo 64-era design Classic dungeon-and-world design with a time-loop structure Traditional Zelda-style action Repeated cycles, masks and a world whose events change with time It is a companion Zelda game, not a non-Zelda substitute
Ocarina of Time 3D The original adventure with updated presentation Nintendo 3DS remake with glasses-free 3D visuals The same foundational dungeon and puzzle adventure The original lock-on action design The same world and discoveries, presented on 3DS Nintendo released it in 2011; hardware and storefront access vary by region

Okami HD: the closest broad substitute

Why it fits the classic Zelda shape

Okami HD is the best first recommendation when you want an adventure that continually alternates between moving through a world, entering puzzle-oriented spaces and gaining abilities that change what you can do. It is frequently grouped with classic 3D Zelda recommendations because exploration and problem solving are central rather than decorative.

The important similarity is structural. You are following an authored journey through a compact fantasy setting, learning how its rules work and using newly acquired tools to reinterpret places you have already seen. That loop captures the satisfaction many players remember from Ocarina of Time: a blocked path is not merely a locked door; it is a question about which ability, observation or route you have not yet tried.

What makes it different

Okami HD has its own brush-based combat and a highly individual art direction. The brush is not a cosmetic overlay on Zelda mechanics; it changes how attacks, interactions and problem solving are expressed. Its visual presentation is more painterly and folkloric, so the mood is not the same as Nintendo’s late-1990s fantasy adventure.

That difference is why “closest” should be read as closest in adventure structure, not as a clone. Players who need the exact feel of a sword, shield and lock-on system may prefer another choice. Players who want a long-form action-adventure in which exploration and tools keep paying off are more likely to accept the mechanical differences.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if your favorite Ocarina memories involve discovering a dungeon’s logic and finding uses for new abilities.
  • Choose it if a strong visual identity is a benefit rather than a distraction.
  • Choose it if you want a self-contained adventure rather than another official Zelda entry.

Do not choose it solely because you want identical combat inputs or Nintendo’s tone. The recommendation rests on its action-adventure, exploration and puzzle emphasis.

Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition: the darker combat-first option

Where it overlaps with Zelda

Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition belongs in the “classic 3D Zelda mould” conversation for readers who want dungeon traversal, environmental puzzles and a fantasy world connected by exploration. Its spaces ask you to move through hazards, read the environment and overcome gated routes rather than simply following a linear series of fights.

The key difference from Okami HD is priority. This is the recommendation for someone who remembers Ocarina as an action game first: targeting enemies, learning attack patterns and feeling a stronger physical momentum while moving through a dungeon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off in tone and balance

The presentation is darker and more aggressive than Nintendo’s generally lighter adventure tone. Combat occupies more of the experience, and the game’s balance is its own. It should not be sold as a faithful recreation of Nintendo’s pacing; it is a reinterpretation in which fighting and traversal carry more weight.

That makes it a particularly useful answer to the question, “Should I play Okami or Darksiders if I liked Ocarina of Time?” Pick Okami for the broadest exploration-and-puzzle match. Pick Darksiders II when heavier combat and a darker fantasy presentation are the deciding factors.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want a combat-forward alternative rather than a gentle or whimsical one.
  • Players who enjoy dungeon traversal as a physical challenge, not only as a sequence of logic puzzles.
  • Players comfortable with a game that shares a structural family resemblance while keeping its own combat balance and presentation.

Tunic: the best choice for secrets and deciphering

Its central idea

Tunic is inspired by the original Legend of Zelda on the NES, but its most distinctive feature is how it makes understanding the game part of the game. An in-game instruction manual is assembled and deciphered over time. Pages, symbols and partial explanations turn observation into progression.

That makes Tunic a strong answer for readers who say they loved getting lost in Ocarina and gradually realizing what the world was telling them. The mystery is not limited to a hidden chest or an optional room; the rules themselves can be a discovery.

Why it is not a direct 3D replacement

The camera is top-down, not third-person 3D. Movement, spatial judgment and the way you read a room therefore differ substantially from Ocarina of Time. Calling it the closest classic 3D Zelda alternative would overstate the match.

Its strength is another kind of fidelity: secrets, environmental clues and the pleasure of connecting fragments without having every answer announced. If the part of Ocarina you miss is walking into a suspicious area and wondering whether you understand it yet, Tunic may feel more familiar than a technically closer third-person game.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if discovery and self-directed deduction matter more than a 3D camera.
  • Choose it if you enjoy keeping mental notes, interpreting diagrams and revisiting earlier assumptions.
  • Choose it if you want a Zelda-inspired game whose identity is built around secrets rather than imitation.

Majora’s Mask 3D: the direct first-party follow-up

If “what should I play after Ocarina of Time?” means “give me another classic 3D Zelda,” start with Majora’s Mask 3D. Nintendo’s 3DS catalogue places it alongside Ocarina of Time 3D, and Nintendo released the remake in 2015.

This is not an alternative franchise game. It uses the same broad first-party design language—an authored world, real-time action, dungeons and tools—but organizes the experience around a time-loop structure. Events, routes and your understanding of the world are shaped by the repeated cycle, so the central challenge is as much about planning and observation as it is about clearing a dungeon.

Choose it when you want Nintendo’s version of the classic 3D formula and are comfortable with a more unusual structure. Choose one of the three non-Zelda recommendations when you specifically want a different setting or a new interpretation of the formula.

Ocarina of Time 3D: the answer when you want Ocarina itself

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D brings the Nintendo 64 classic to Nintendo 3DS with glasses-free 3D visuals. Nintendo released it in 2011. It is the direct replay option: the world, dungeon progression and lock-on action remain the reason to play, while the presentation is designed for the 3DS hardware.

This is the right choice when your question is not really “which game is similar?” but “how can I revisit Ocarina in an updated edition?” It avoids the compromises inherent in substitutes because the underlying adventure is still the one you remember.

Availability is hardware- and region-dependent. The 3DS edition’s release date is established, but current storefront access, physical stock and second-hand pricing can change. Check the edition sold in your region before assuming that a digital or boxed copy is available.

How the games compare on the six decisions that matter

Camera and world presentation

For a third-person 3D perspective, start with Okami HD, Darksiders II, Majora’s Mask 3D or Ocarina of Time 3D. Tunic deliberately moves to a top-down view, trading 3D movement for a clearer emphasis on secrets and readable environmental details.

Dungeon and puzzle density

Okami HD is the broadest non-Zelda match when puzzles and tool-driven progression are your priority. Darksiders II also offers traversal and puzzle spaces but gives combat more room. Tunic distributes discovery through the world and its manual rather than reproducing a conventional third-person dungeon template. The two Nintendo editions are the only choices here that preserve Zelda’s own dungeon design lineage.

Combat emphasis

Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition is the combat-first pick. Okami HD provides action combat through its brush system. Tunic includes combat but is most distinctive as a discovery game. Majora’s Mask 3D and Ocarina of Time 3D retain Nintendo’s traditional lock-on-oriented action design.

Secrets and decoding

Tunic is the clear leader because deciphering its manual is central to understanding the experience. Majora’s Mask 3D rewards observation through its time-loop structure. Okami HD and Darksiders II focus more on authored progression through abilities and traversal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tone and art direction

Okami HD is painterly and unmistakably its own work. Darksiders II is darker and more combat-oriented. Tunic uses a compact, top-down presentation that supports mystery. The Nintendo games retain the tone and visual language associated with their respective Zelda editions.

A practical decision guide

  1. Want the closest overall non-Zelda structure? Start with Okami HD.
  2. Want more fighting and a darker fantasy world? Choose Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition.
  3. Want to decode secrets and an in-game manual? Choose Tunic, accepting its top-down camera.
  4. Want another official classic 3D Zelda? Play Majora’s Mask 3D and accept the time-loop structure.
  5. Want the same adventure with updated 3DS presentation? Choose Ocarina of Time 3D.

What each recommendation does not promise

  • Okami HD does not reproduce Nintendo’s exact combat, camera or tone.
  • Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition does not offer the same lightness or balance as a Nintendo Zelda game.
  • Tunic does not provide third-person 3D movement; its similarity is in discovery and Zelda-inspired design.
  • Majora’s Mask 3D is not a substitute franchise game and its time-loop structure changes how you plan progress.
  • Ocarina of Time 3D is an updated edition of the original, not a new adventure.

Bottom line: which game should you play?

For most players asking for “games like Ocarina of Time,” begin with Okami HD: it best preserves the authored action-adventure rhythm of exploration, puzzles and ability-driven progression while remaining its own game. Choose Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition if combat should dominate, and Tunic if the real attraction is secrets and learning through clues. For Nintendo’s own continuation, Majora’s Mask 3D is the first-party choice; for a faithful replay, Ocarina of Time 3D is the answer.
