Games Like Overcooked for Couples, Friends, and Families

PlateUp! is the closest follow-up if you want cooking, serving, and escalating restaurant chaos. Unrailed! is the best mechanical match for frantic handoffs and a shared deadline, even though you build railway track instead of meals. For a six-person party, choose Boomerang Fu; for renovation or moving-house teamwork, consider Tools Up! or Moving Out 2.

The right choice depends less on colorful presentation than on the job your group wants to perform together: run a kitchen, keep a train moving, renovate a room, carry furniture, or compete in quick party rounds.

Quick picks by group and mood

Situation Best first pick Why it fits Important caveat
Couple that still wants cooking PlateUp! Cooking and serving remain central, with restaurant layout, appliance placement, menu choices, and progression between shifts. Planning and redesign between shifts make it more deliberate than a pure arcade session.
Two to four friends who enjoy frantic handoffs Unrailed! Everyone gathers resources, crafts track, and solves a bottleneck before the moving train reaches danger. The shared task is railway construction, not food preparation.
Family sharing one Switch or console Overcooked 2 or Unrailed! Both document same-system multiplayer; Unrailed! supports one to four players on one Switch. Check age suitability, controller availability, and any platform subscription needed for online play.
Six-person friend party Boomerang Fu Local rounds support up to six players and use simple controls that are easy to explain. It is primarily team or versus combat, not a cooperative work simulator.
Group that wants renovation chaos Tools Up! or Moving Out 2 Tools Up! focuses on timed renovation; Moving Out 2 focuses on coordinated furniture logistics. Confirm the platform and online features for the exact edition you plan to buy.

What makes an Overcooked-like game work?

Overcooked’s appeal comes from a particular kind of cooperation. Players have a shared objective, but each person controls only part of the process. Someone gathers ingredients, another prepares or cooks them, another delivers orders, and everyone must react when a plan breaks. The fun comes from communication under pressure: calling for a handoff, changing jobs, and laughing at a failure that was nobody’s fault individually.

Use four questions to compare alternatives:

  • How many people can play together? A game advertised for four is not automatically suitable for a six-person gathering.
  • Is multiplayer local, online, or both? “Multiplayer” can mean shared-screen couch play, separate online systems, or both. Check the edition and platform.
  • What shared job are you doing? Cooking and restaurant planning feel different from gathering materials, laying track, renovating, or moving furniture.
  • Is the objective cooperative or competitive? Some games ask the whole group to complete one task; others put friends on teams or against one another in short rounds.

PlateUp!: the closest cooking follow-up

PlateUp! is the strongest recommendation for a couple or small group that wants to keep the kitchen setting. Official descriptions support up to four players in local and online co-op, including shared-screen play and Remote Play Together. The core loop combines cooking, serving customers, and keeping a restaurant operating through a run.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How its teamwork differs from Overcooked

PlateUp! adds a management layer around the frantic work. Before or between shifts, players choose menu items, place appliances, and arrange the restaurant floor. The developer describes two-button interactions designed so that new players can pick the game up quickly while still leaving room for deeper planning. Restaurants are procedural, and upgrades are randomized, so a successful run is not simply a memorized sequence of levels.

A PlayStation description frames a restaurant run as 15 hectic days. That structure gives a group a clear arc: survive service, make decisions about equipment and layout, then see whether the next shift exposes a weakness in the workflow. Couples who enjoy discussing where to put a sink or whether to add a more complicated menu will find more to do here than in a short arcade stage.

Who should choose it?

  • Choose PlateUp! if cooking and serving are non-negotiable.
  • Choose it for two to four players who enjoy making a plan, testing it, and rebuilding after a failed run.
  • Expect more time spent on restaurant design and progression than in a single Overcooked level.

It is less suitable when your group wants a completely spontaneous party game with no between-round decisions. Its planning is part of the appeal, but it changes the pace.

Unrailed!: the best non-cooking match for shared deadlines

Unrailed! preserves the handoff-and-deadline feeling by moving the action to a railway. A train continually advances while the team gathers materials, crafts track, and lays enough rail to keep the route ahead of it. Nintendo describes cooperation and coordination as essential to surviving an increasingly challenging journey.

The bottleneck that creates the shouting

The team works with a one-tool-of-each-type bottleneck. That means players cannot all perform every useful action simultaneously; someone may be cutting wood, another mining, another carrying resources, and another placing track. If the person holding the needed tool is on the wrong side of the map, the whole group feels the delay. The resulting calls—who has the pick, where is the next piece, do we have enough iron—create the same social rhythm as passing ingredients and plates in a kitchen.

Player counts and modes

Nintendo’s Switch listing documents one to four players on a single system and two to four players online. The game also supports local couch and online co-op more broadly, with procedurally generated worlds that keep routes and resource problems from becoming identical every time.

Boomerang Fu: the six-player party alternative

Boomerang Fu is the pick when the priority is fitting a larger group into one room. Its developer advertises local rounds for up to six players, simple one-stick and three-button controls, more than 30 arenas, team play, and optional friendly fire.

Why it feels different

Unlike Overcooked, Boomerang Fu does not ask the group to complete one chain of physical tasks. Players throw boomerangs, dodge attacks, and try to outlast or defeat one another. Teams can make it more social, but the fundamental tension is combat positioning rather than coordinated production. Friendly fire can create hilarious mistakes, while its short rounds make it easy for people to rotate in and out.

Pick it for a party that wants fast explanations and repeated rematches. Do not choose it expecting recipe management, appliance placement, or a shared restaurant score. It is a lighter social alternative, not an equivalent cooperative work simulator.

Moving furniture or renovating: two different kinds of chaos

Moving Out 2

Moving Out 2 turns cooperation into furniture logistics. Players coordinate lifting, carrying, throwing, and routing objects through a house or other obstacle-filled space. The appeal is in deciding who handles which item and how to get awkward objects through a doorway before the timer or level requirements become a problem. The comparative material for this game identifies both local and online play, but the exact features can vary by platform and edition, so verify the listing for your system.

Tools Up!

Tools Up! focuses on timed renovation. A team prepares rooms by performing jobs such as painting, laying materials, and clearing debris while trying to finish before the clock. It is a natural choice when your group likes the urgency of Overcooked but wants a construction task instead of cooking. The documented comparison identifies local play; check the current platform listing before assuming online multiplayer.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

These games are best understood as task substitutions. Moving Out 2 emphasizes transporting objects through space, while Tools Up! emphasizes completing a sequence of renovation jobs under a deadline. Neither should be described as a cooking replacement with identical systems.

Family and couch-co-op checks before you buy

Age and younger players

A University of Sydney family guide rates Overcooked 2 as G-rated, recommends it for ages 8 and up, and notes that younger children may need help. That is a useful baseline for family sessions, but it is not a universal rating for every alternative. Read the age classification for the specific game and region, especially if your group includes young children.

Local multiplayer setup

Confirm that “local multiplayer” means the arrangement you have in mind. Shared-screen couch play usually requires one copy of the game and one compatible controller per player, but platform rules differ. For a family on one Switch, Unrailed!’s documented one-to-four local mode is explicit; other titles may use different limits or control requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online subscriptions and cross-platform play

Console online play may require that platform’s paid online subscription. The University of Sydney guide also notes that cross-platform play was unavailable in the Overcooked 2 editions it reviewed. Do not assume that friends on different systems can join one another simply because a game has an online mode; check the current edition’s feature list and account requirements.

Choose by session length and communication style

Your group wants… Start with… Reason
A longer campaign of improving a shared system PlateUp! Restaurant runs combine repeated service with menu, appliance, and layout decisions.
Constant movement and an obvious countdown Unrailed! The train keeps moving while the team gathers, crafts, and lays track.
Five or six people taking turns in short matches Boomerang Fu Six-player local rounds and simple controls reduce setup time.
Physical-space puzzles involving objects Moving Out 2 Furniture movement creates coordination problems rather than recipe chains.
Timed room makeovers Tools Up! Renovation tasks replace cooking while preserving deadline pressure.

For a couple, PlateUp! is usually the richest long-term choice because two players can divide cooking, serving, and planning without leaving a third person idle. For three or four friends who enjoy assigning roles loudly, Unrailed! creates especially clear dependencies. For a mixed-age gathering where not everyone wants a long explanation, Boomerang Fu’s control scheme and short rounds are easier to teach.

How to get better couch-co-op sessions

  1. Decide the objective before launching. Say whether the group wants a shared score, a campaign-style run, or quick competitive rounds. This prevents choosing Boomerang Fu when people actually wanted a cooperative task game.
  2. Check player count and mode on the exact platform. Confirm local versus online support, maximum players, and whether the game uses shared screen or separate systems.
  3. Assign jobs out loud. In PlateUp!, nominate a cook, server, and planner for the first shift. In Unrailed!, call out who is gathering each resource, who owns the tool, and who is laying track.
  4. Keep the first run simple. Learn the basic loop before adding optional complexity. In a restaurant game, avoid overloading the menu immediately; on the railway, prioritize a safe route before collecting every extra resource.
  5. Use failure as information. After a lost shift or derailment, identify one bottleneck and change one role, layout, or route. Changing everything at once makes it hard to tell what helped.
  6. Plan controller handoffs. Keep charging cables or spare compatible controllers ready, especially for families and six-player parties. A game that supports six players is not useful if only three controllers are available.

The bottom line

Choose PlateUp! when you want the nearest cooking-and-serving successor, with up to four-player local or online co-op and meaningful restaurant planning. Choose Unrailed! when the essential ingredient is cooperative urgency: a moving deadline, scarce tools, resource gathering, and constant handoffs. Choose Boomerang Fu for up to six local players and fast party rounds, while remembering that it is competitive combat rather than shared task completion. Moving Out 2 and Tools Up! round out the list for furniture logistics and timed renovation. Before a family purchase, verify the current platform edition, age rating, controller needs, online subscription, and cross-platform support.
