Choose Lethal Company for harsher scavenging pressure, Deep Rock Galactic for combat and class roles, Valheim for a persistent building world, or Sons of the Forest for darker, story-led survival.
PEAK occupies a distinctive niche: it is a four-player co-op climbing game in which procedural routes, physics-driven hazards and limited survival resources turn every ascent into a shared risk assessment. The alternatives below keep different parts of that formula while changing the balance between climbing, horror, combat, comedy and long-term progression.

What makes PEAK different?
PEAK launched on June 16, 2025. Its central loop is a co-op summit attempt: up to four players explore procedural terrain, choose routes, share tools and react to hazards whose physics can turn a safe-looking move into a team emergency. The game combines traversal with survival-horror elements, but climbing—not shooting or base construction—is the main verb.

That structure matters when you choose an alternative. A game can be “co-op survival” while offering a completely different experience if it replaces short summit attempts with a permanent world, replaces route planning with combat, or makes resource quotas more important than physical movement. The table separates those trade-offs before the detailed recommendations.

PEAK alternatives compared
| Game | Traversal emphasis | Horror intensity | Combat load | Progression structure | Supported group size | What failure feels like |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PEAK | Physics-based climbing, route choice and hazardous procedural terrain | Medium; tension comes from exposure, hazards and survival pressure | Low; traversal and tool use dominate | Run-based summit attempts | Up to four players | Usually funny, chaotic setbacks during an ascent, with the team trying to recover |
| Content Warning | Expeditions through the Old World rather than vertical climbing | Medium-high and explicitly horror-focused | Low; recording and escaping are more important than fighting | Short recording runs | 2–4 players | Oxygen or camera-battery limits can end a run while the group scrambles to leave |
| Lethal Company | Planetary and facility exploration, navigation and carrying scrap | High | Moderate; avoidance, tools and situational defense matter | Quota-based scavenging runs | Up to four players | Lost scrap and missed quotas create meaningful longer-term pressure |
| Deep Rock Galactic | Mining and movement through destructible procedural caves | Low to medium; monsters and darkness create danger, but horror is not the focus | Very high, with distinct class roles | Repeatable missions with persistent progression | 1–4 players | A failed mission ends that operation; the appeal is replayable objectives rather than a permanent world loss |
| Valheim | Open-world exploration, sailing and terrain traversal | Low to medium, varying by biome and encounter | Medium to high survival combat | Persistent world, crafting and base building | Not stated in the available listing details | Deaths and resource recovery can affect a continuing settlement and expedition |
| Sons of the Forest | Wilderness movement, caves, shelter construction and exploration | High, with a darker survival tone | High | Persistent, story-oriented survival | Not stated in the available listing details | Longer-term shelter, equipment and story progress make setbacks more consequential than a single PEAK run |
1. Content Warning: the closest substitute for goofy co-op horror
Content Warning released on April 1, 2024. Its official description states: “Content Warning is a co-op horror game where you film spooky stuff with your friends to try and go viral.” That sentence captures why it is the easiest recommendation for a PEAK group that values communication, slapstick and short sessions over deep combat systems.
How its loop works
A team of two to four players descends into the Old World, records monsters and relics, and tries to escape before oxygen or camera battery runs out. The camera creates a social objective: one player may frame a dangerous encounter while another watches the exit, and everyone has to decide when a worthwhile clip is no longer worth the risk. The resulting failures are often immediate and visible, which gives the game a similar “we should not have tried that” energy to a disastrous climb.
Why PEAK players may prefer it
- Both games reward proximity-style communication. Calling out a route, a threat or the moment to retreat is more valuable than silently optimizing a character build.
- Runs are compact and self-contained, so a group can restart quickly after an unlucky expedition.
- The tone is openly comedic even when the setting is frightening; mistakes become stories rather than only lost progression.
Where it differs
There is no equivalent to PEAK’s sustained vertical ascent. Movement through the Old World serves the filming objective, and the strongest pressure comes from oxygen and camera-battery limits. Horror is also more explicit: the game asks you to seek out spooky subjects on camera rather than treating frightening encounters as one part of a climb. Pick it when your priority is four-person comedy-horror and shared panic, not climbing technique.
2. Lethal Company: the choice for quota pressure and stronger horror
Lethal Company launched on October 23, 2023. Steam describes it as “A co-op horror about scavenging at abandoned moons to sell scrap to the Company.” The current game supports up to four players, with multiple planets, creatures and tools built around a quota-driven expedition structure.
The decision that defines every mission
Your crew can enter a facility together or split responsibilities between the surface and the ship. A player outside may guide teammates, monitor the situation and help with extraction decisions while others carry scrap through hostile interiors. That division creates a different kind of co-op communication from PEAK: instead of coordinating a physical ascent, the group is balancing information, carrying capacity, time and the value of what has already been recovered.

Why it is more punishing
In PEAK, a failed move is often a spectacular local disaster that the team may still salvage. Lethal Company attaches risk to the crew’s broader quota. Staying longer can produce more valuable scrap, but danger escalates and a late death can erase the practical benefit of the expedition. The game therefore suits players who enjoy arguing over whether one more room is worth the risk.
What you give up compared with PEAK
Physical climbing is not the main attraction. Exploration is horizontal and interior-focused, with navigation, creature behavior and extraction replacing route-finding on a mountain. Combat exists, but survival often depends more on awareness, tools and retreat than on winning a direct fight. Choose this alternative when horror intensity and resource risk matter more than physics-driven traversal.
3. Deep Rock Galactic: the best alternative for combat and class teamwork
Deep Rock Galactic released on May 13, 2020. Its Steam description calls it “Deep Rock Galactic is a 1-4 player co-op FPS featuring dwarven space miners, procedurally-generated destructible environments, and endless hordes of alien monsters.” It is the strongest recommendation for a group that likes PEAK’s procedural spaces but wants structured objectives, character roles and frequent combat.
How class roles change cooperation
Each mission asks the team to solve objectives inside caves that can be mined and reshaped. Class abilities give players different ways to illuminate, traverse, defend and manipulate the environment, so planning is less about everyone carrying the same climbing tools and more about combining complementary capabilities. A well-coordinated group can open routes, control enemy approaches and keep an objective moving while another player handles a specialist task.
Why the missions stay replayable
Procedurally generated caves and repeatable objectives provide a reliable structure for regular sessions. You can approach a mission as a focused operation rather than committing to a permanent settlement. That makes the game a good fit for friends who want progression and variety but do not want to maintain a shared survival base between sessions.

The central trade-off
Combat is not a side activity. Alien hordes, weapons and class abilities define the tempo, while traversal supports the mission. If the part of PEAK you love is judging a jump, sharing a rope or recovering from a physics accident, Deep Rock Galactic may feel more like a co-op shooter with environmental problem-solving. If you want clear roles and action, it is the better match.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Valheim: the long-form survival and building option
Valheim belongs on this list for players who want to turn a co-op expedition into a continuing world. Rather than resetting after a summit attempt, the game emphasizes exploration, crafting, base building and long-term group progression. Your party can develop a settlement, prepare equipment and return to a dangerous region with a stronger plan.
Why choose a persistent world?
Persistence changes the meaning of preparation. In a PEAK-style run, the question is whether the team can reach the summit with the tools and resources currently available. In Valheim, preparation can include improving a base, crafting better equipment, establishing routes and storing supplies for a future expedition. The reward is not only surviving the current trip; it is making the next trip more capable.
How its tone compares
Valheim is a survival adventure whose danger varies by biome and encounter. It can create tension through isolation, weather, unfamiliar territory and hostile creatures, but it is not built around the same concentrated horror-comedy rhythm as PEAK or Lethal Company. Groups that want to build, sail, explore and gradually master a world will get more from it than groups seeking a sequence of short, tightly bounded runs.
What to verify before starting
Co-op modes, supported platforms and feature details can change as a game is updated. Check the current store listing for the edition and platforms your group uses before buying, especially if everyone is not playing on the same system. The available listing information does not establish a single supported group-size figure here, so do not assume that every platform or version has identical multiplayer support.

5. Sons of the Forest: darker story-led survival
Sons of the Forest is the pick for a group that wants hostile wilderness, shelter building, caves and a more continuous story-oriented experience. It moves furthest from PEAK’s compact summit attempts: the world and its threats are part of an ongoing survival campaign rather than a series of independent climbs.
What makes it the darker branch
The setting, caves and hostile inhabitants support a sustained survival-horror atmosphere. You are not simply trying to complete a funny expedition before a timer; you are establishing enough security and capability to keep exploring. That gives encounters more narrative weight and makes the environment feel like a place to inhabit, not only a route to cross.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if your group wants shelter construction to matter between expeditions.
- Choose it if caves and wilderness exploration are more appealing than a single vertical objective.
- Choose it if a darker story and persistent world are worth longer sessions and more involved preparation.
Why it is a larger commitment
A persistent story-led survival game asks players to remember where they left equipment, what the shelter needs and which unexplored area should come next. That is a different social contract from launching another PEAK attempt after a failed climb. Confirm current multiplayer modes and platform support for your edition before committing, because those details are not fixed across every listing or update.

If you want the closest overall mood
Start with Content Warning. It preserves the short-run structure, four-person scale and comic panic, while making horror and filming the explicit objective. It is the most natural follow-up when your group’s favorite PEAK moments are shouted warnings, accidental teamwork and ridiculous recoveries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want fear to have a measurable cost
Pick Lethal Company. Quotas and scrap make the stay-or-leave decision concrete, and the possibility of losing the value of a mission gives each extra room a reason to feel dangerous. It is better than PEAK for groups that enjoy negotiating risk under escalating horror pressure.

If you want to fight together
Pick Deep Rock Galactic. Its 1–4-player structure, procedural destructible caves and class-based cooperation make it the clearest combat-oriented alternative. Expect the team’s attention to move from route safety and climbing physics toward enemy control, objective completion and role execution.
If you want a world that remembers your work
Pick Valheim. Base construction, crafting and exploration create a persistent arc in which every expedition can improve the next one. This is the best fit for groups that meet regularly and enjoy building a shared home as much as entering dangerous territory.
If you want the darkest campaign
Pick Sons of the Forest. It offers the strongest story-led survival direction here, with wilderness, caves, shelter construction and a heavier horror atmosphere. Choose it when a longer campaign is a benefit rather than a burden.

Run-based games versus persistent survival worlds
The most important practical distinction is whether your group wants to reset after each session. PEAK, Content Warning, Lethal Company and Deep Rock Galactic organize play around missions or runs. You can learn from a failure, discuss what went wrong and start another attempt without maintaining a shared settlement.
Valheim and Sons of the Forest treat progress as something that remains in the world. Construction, stored resources, explored locations and story progress make the campaign cumulative. That persistence is rewarding for a regular group, but it can create friction when players have different schedules or when one person misses several sessions.
How group size changes the experience
PEAK is designed for up to four friends, and its coordination challenges are most legible in a small team where everyone can communicate quickly. Content Warning supports two to four players, making it particularly suitable for pairs as well as full groups. Lethal Company and Deep Rock Galactic support up to four players, with the latter also designed to function as a one-player experience.
The available details do not establish a single group-size figure for Valheim or Sons of the Forest in every edition. Check the current listing for your platform before purchasing, and confirm whether cross-play or version-specific restrictions affect your friends.
A practical selection checklist
- Identify the main verb. Choose PEAK or an equivalent traversal-focused game if climbing and route decisions are the point. Choose Deep Rock Galactic if shooting and class abilities should dominate.
- Decide how much horror you want. Content Warning offers comic horror, Lethal Company raises the pressure, and Sons of the Forest commits to a darker survival atmosphere.
- Choose your failure model. Short runs make it easy to laugh and restart. Quotas and persistent worlds make mistakes more costly but also make preparation more meaningful.
- Match the game to your schedule. Run-based missions fit irregular sessions. Valheim and Sons of the Forest reward a group that can return to the same world consistently.
- Check the current platform listing. Multiplayer modes, supported player counts and platform compatibility can change, particularly for games that receive ongoing updates.
Bottom line
PEAK remains the specialist choice for physics-driven co-op climbing and hazardous summit attempts. Content Warning is the nearest replacement for goofy four-player horror, Lethal Company is the stronger scavenging-pressure game, and Deep Rock Galactic is the answer for combat and repeatable class-based missions. Move to Valheim for persistent building and exploration, or to Sons of the Forest for a darker, story-led survival campaign.
