If you are asking “What games are like Phantom Blade Zero?” because you want rapid deflects, counters and cinematic swordplay, three strong choices stand out: Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for the closest Chinese setting-and-rhythm connection, Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition for the deepest loot and build experimentation, and Black Myth: Wukong for polished, single-player action rooted in Chinese mythology.
Phantom Blade Zero is not yet available at the time of writing. Its official release timing is October 28, 2026 in the United States and select regions, while the PlayStation Blog lists October 29 for other regions. The guide below explains what makes it distinctive, then matches each alternative to a specific preference rather than treating “similar” as one broad category.

What is Phantom Blade Zero?
Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia action RPG developed and published by S-GAME. PlayStation describes it as a game powered by Unreal Engine 5, combining Chinese martial-arts cinema with a harsh industrial-fantasy world. The protagonist is Soul, a swordsman whose heart has been wounded and who has only 66 days left to live. After being framed for murdering his master, he becomes the target of a broad manhunt.

Combat built around one continuous exchange
The appeal is technical martial-arts combat rather than a slow, defensive loop. The Steam description summarizes the intended flow as “Dodge, deflect, counter, and strike in one seamless flow.” That wording points to a system where defense is an active part of offense: you read an incoming attack, answer with a precisely timed deflection or dodge, then keep the exchange moving with counters and weapon strings.
PlayStation lists more than 30 primary weapons and more than 20 Phantom Edges. The August 2026 State of Play article describes more than 30 main weapons, 25 secondary weapons, upgradeable builds, side quests and three difficulty modes: Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days. The counts differ because the two official descriptions were published at different times and use slightly different categories. Treat them as a picture of a broad arsenal, not as a promise that every weapon is available from the opening minutes.
Kungfupunk presentation
The game’s visual identity has been described as “kungfupunk”: wuxia martial arts layered over punk fantasy, mechanical prosthetics, industrial ruins and Chinese visual motifs. It is designed to feel like a choreographed martial-arts film without abandoning game-readable timing.

Soulframe Liang, founder and CEO of S-GAME, explained why the animation is being authored by hand: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” — Soulframe Liang, PlayStation Blog, May 24, 2023. The statement matters for players choosing a substitute: the target is not merely a large animation library, but deliberately shaped attacks whose timing and silhouettes communicate what the opponent is doing.
Is it a Souls-like?
Some storefront tags place Phantom Blade Zero near Souls-like games, but that is not a developer-defined genre label. Its stated ambitions are faster and more combo-oriented than the deliberately measured rhythm many players associate with that term. It is more useful to compare the game by combat timing, build complexity, setting and co-op than by a single genre word.
S-GAME’s 2023 public figure of more than 20 million refers to the fan base for the wider Phantom Blade franchise. It is not a Phantom Blade Zero sales number.

What games are like Phantom Blade Zero?
The table separates the qualities players usually mean when they ask for a similar game. “Technical” can mean strict deflect timing, expressive combo play, complicated loot, or simply a high skill ceiling; these games emphasize different parts of that experience.

Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition: choose it for builds and mastery
Nioh 2 is the best substitute if “technical combat” means learning several systems at once and then expressing that knowledge through a highly customized character. Its Steam description calls it a masocore action RPG set in Sengoku-period Japan. You create a character, fight human enemies and yokai, manage multiple weapon approaches and use Yokai Shift, a transformation system that changes how you handle supernatural encounters.
Why it fits
- Layered combat decisions: stance management, weapon choice, enemy-specific timing and yokai mechanics give experienced players several ways to solve the same fight.
- Loot-driven experimentation: the large equipment and build space is the clearest match for players who want to keep refining a setup rather than follow a mostly curated upgrade path.
- Co-op option: Steam lists co-op, so the game can support a shared progression experience that is not established for Phantom Blade Zero in the cited official materials.
Where it differs
The setting is Japanese history and yokai mythology, not wuxia or kungfupunk. Its breadth can also make the first hours feel more system-heavy than a focused cinematic action game. Choose it when equipment depth matters more than matching Phantom Blade Zero’s Chinese visual language.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty: the closest setting-and-rhythm bridge
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is the most natural answer to “What should I play while waiting for Phantom Blade Zero?” if you want Chinese historical fantasy and quick martial-arts exchanges in the same session. Team NINJA’s Steam listing identifies it as a dark-fantasy action RPG set during the Three Kingdoms period and tags it with martial arts, Souls-like, hack-and-slash and co-op.
Why it fits
- Chinese cultural setting: the Three Kingdoms backdrop gives you a direct thematic connection that neither Nioh 2 nor most Japanese-set action RPGs can provide.
- Fast defensive rhythm: the game’s identity is built around responding quickly in close combat, making it the strongest bridge if your priority is the feeling of turning an enemy’s attack into your opening.
- Co-op: the Steam listing confirms cooperative play for players who want help through difficult encounters.
Where it differs
Wo Long is historical fantasy rather than industrial punk fantasy. Its storefront labels include Souls-like, but that tag should not be read as proof that it reproduces Phantom Blade Zero’s animation style, weapon roster or combo structure. Pick it for setting and reaction speed, not for an identical progression model.
Black Myth: Wukong: the polished single-player mythology choice
Black Myth: Wukong is the best alternative when you want a finished, single-player action RPG with Chinese cultural texture and a strong visual presentation. Game Science’s Steam listing confirms its 2024 release, Chinese-mythology premise, combat focus, hack-and-slash tags and single-player format.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Why it fits
- Chinese mythology: the cultural foundation is closer to Phantom Blade Zero than a European fantasy setting would be, even though the stories and characters are different.
- Focused solo format: there is no co-op requirement or party composition to manage; the experience is built around one protagonist and authored encounters.
- Action-first presentation: it delivers the kind of readable spectacle players often seek when they describe a game as cinematic.
Where it differs
Its combat and progression should be judged on their own terms. The game is not a wuxia “kungfupunk” project, and its single-player structure does not establish the same weapon-and-Phantom-Edge breadth described for Phantom Blade Zero. Choose it when atmosphere, mythology and a polished solo campaign outrank extensive loot or co-op.
Which game should you play first?
Use this preference test rather than a generic ranking:
- You want the most complicated builds and gear decisions: start with Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition.
- You want Chinese historical fantasy and rapid defensive exchanges: choose Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.
- You want a single-player Chinese-mythology action RPG: choose Black Myth: Wukong.
- You want the exact blend of handcrafted wuxia choreography, industrial “kungfupunk” art direction and Soul’s 66-day premise: wait for Phantom Blade Zero, because none of the alternatives combines those stated elements.
This also clarifies what “similar” cannot promise. A game may share parry timing but not the setting, share Chinese visual motifs but not the weapon system, or offer deeper loot while losing the tightly authored cinematic flow.

The PlayStation page for Phantom Blade Zero documents DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. On PS5, the official DualSense wireless controller is therefore the most direct way to experience the input and feedback features the game advertises. Those features do not change the underlying timing rules, but they can make resistance and impact easier to perceive during a deflect-heavy exchange.
The alternatives in this guide have official Steam purchase pages. Store prices, editions, review percentages and regional availability can change, so verify the current listing on your platform before buying. The same caution applies to physical-disc inventory and pre-order editions for Phantom Blade Zero; the PlayStation page shows standard and Digital Deluxe pre-orders, while stock and regional eligibility are not universal.
