Recommended Free Tools
If you want another game like Portal, choose by what you want to repeat: puzzle rooms and a Portal-like presentation, perspective tricks, or demanding first-person puzzles. These seven recommendations vary in how closely they match; none is a verified top-ten ranking, and several are broader alternatives rather than Portal-mechanic substitutes.
Which games are closest to Portal?
The Portal Alike Steam curator distinguishes close matches in mechanics, puzzle design, and structure from games that share only selected features or a test-chamber atmosphere. That is a useful way to sort recommendations, but it is not a quality ranking. The available descriptions support seven candidates, not a defensible list of ten.

The Entropy Centre
A Steam community guide includes The Entropy Centre among its Portal-like recommendations. It is a candidate if you want a puzzle game with a Portal-like setting, but the guide alone does not establish how closely its mechanics match Portal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLightmatter
The same community guide recommends Lightmatter, describing traversal using light and shadows, puzzle solving, and Portal references. Those are user-authored impressions rather than verified official details, so treat it as a possible atmosphere-and-puzzle match, not a confirmed mechanical equivalent.
#1 Best Overall
- The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces dynamic characters, fresh puzzle elements, and a larger set of devious test chambers
- The two-player mode features a separate campaign with unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters.
- Advanced use of physics allow for the creation of a whole new range of interesting challenges, producing a much larger but not harder game.
- A massive sequel to the title named 2007's Game of the Year by over 30 publications worldwide.
- Players explore areas of the Aperture Science Labs and reunite with GLaDOS, the murderous computer companion.
What if you want Portal’s spatial surprises?
Superliminal
Superliminal uses forced perspective and optical illusions in a first-person puzzle game. Steam’s store description calls it “a first-person puzzle game based on forced perspective and optical illusions.” It is a strong fit if Portal’s spatial surprises appealed to you, but its defining trick is perspective manipulation rather than placing portals.
Viewfinder
In Viewfinder, photographs and other images can be placed into the world to reshape it. Steam describes it as “a mind-bending first person adventure game in which you can bring pictures to life by placing them into the world.” Pick it for visual perspective tricks and world manipulation, not as a direct Portal-gun substitute.
Rank #2
- Extensive single player game featuring next generation gameplay and a wildly-engrossing story
- Complete two-person cooperative multiplayer game featuring its own dedicated story, characters, and gameplay
- Advanced use of physics allow for the creation of a whole new range of interesting challenges, producing a much larger but not harder game
- Win/Mac software is PC and Macintosh compatible
- A massive sequel to the title named 2007's Game of the Year by over 30 publications worldwide.
Manifold Garden
Manifold Garden reimagines physics and space, making it a candidate for players who enjoy spatial or physical puzzles. Its store description supports that broad comparison; it does not establish that the game recreates Portal’s portal-placement mechanic.

What if you want first-person puzzles more than Portal’s mechanics?
The Talos Principle
The Talos Principle is a first-person puzzle recommendation for players seeking challenging puzzles rather than a close Portal lookalike. The community guide that includes it specifically cautions that it does not look like Portal. Steam identifies Croteam as developer and Devolver Digital and Croteam as publishers; it lists 11 December 2014 as the release date.
Rank #3
- The merging of two worlds: the first bridge constructor with an official Portal license
- Create complex construction in the aperture science labs
- Let glados accompany you through tricky physics adventures
- Use portals, aerial Faith plates, propulsion Gel, repulsion Gel, and much more to master the complicated tasks
- Evade dangers such as Sentry Turrets, emancipation gorillas, laser fields, and acid
The Witness
The Witness moves away from Portal’s guided test-chamber structure: Steam describes a single-player open-world island with dozens of locations and over 500 puzzles. The puzzle volume is from the game’s Steam description, which gives no year for that figure. Choose it for a broader puzzle-focused exploration experience, not for Portal-like mechanics.

- For a Portal-like setting and puzzle framing: Start with The Entropy Centre or Lightmatter, while treating the community guide’s descriptions as recommendations rather than verified mechanic-by-mechanic comparisons.
- For visual or spatial rule-bending: Try Superliminal for forced perspective, Viewfinder for image-based world changes, or Manifold Garden for space and physics.
- For demanding first-person puzzles: Consider The Talos Principle; its similarity is in the puzzle experience, not its appearance.
- For many puzzles in a more open format: The Witness offers an island and, according to Steam’s description, over 500 puzzles.
These games differ in structure and central mechanic. The available descriptions do not establish a consistent difficulty scale, so choose by the kind of puzzle-solving you want rather than assuming one is harder than another.
