Games Like Squadron 42 for a Cinematic Space Combat Campaign

Star Wars: Squadrons is the closest released match for players who want a directed, first-person starfighter campaign with cinematic presentation. It delivers a self-contained single-player story, but it is narrower than Squadron 42: the action stays in starfighters rather than combining ship combat with on-foot first-person play and character scenes. For a different balance, choose Everspace 2 for open-world action-RPG progression, Elite Dangerous for simulation and sandbox freedom, Chorus for fast arcade combat with a narrative through-line, or the Wing Commander series for the historical campaign model that Squadron 42 is intended to evoke.

Is Squadron 42 available yet?

No. Roberts Space Industries’ support article, updated October 13, 2026, says that Squadron 42 is still in development and “not available for download.” The same article lists Q2 2027 as the current scheduled release window. That is a schedule, not a guarantee, so anyone looking for this style of game today needs a released alternative.

The project’s intended shape is clearer than its delivery date. An archival RSI FAQ dated December 3, 2012 describes an offline, single-player campaign modeled on Wing Commander, while describing Star Citizen’s broader gameplay as related to both Wing Commander and Privateer with a more realistic physics system. In practical terms, readers are looking for a authored space-combat story rather than a purely systemic galaxy.

Which games are the best alternatives?

Game Authored story Cockpit combat Mission structure and freedom Progression On-foot play Availability
Star Wars: Squadrons Self-contained single-player story First-person starfighter focus Directed campaign; limited compared with a sandbox Ship modification Not stated as part of the campaign Released; current platform and edition availability varies
Everspace 2 Narrative through-line Spacecraft action combat Open-world structure with exploration Loot and character-style action-RPG progression Not stated Released; verify the edition and platform you intend to use
Elite Dangerous Not a tightly authored campaign Simulation-oriented spaceflight Large open-ended galaxy and emergent play Not the primary attraction described here Not stated Released; platform and version availability should be checked
Chorus Narrative through-line Fast, arcade-leaning combat More action-led than military-campaign focused Not stated as the defining feature Not stated Released; verify current storefront support
Wing Commander series Historical model for an offline campaign Classic mission-based space combat Campaign-led rather than a modern open-world sandbox Varies by edition Not stated Availability and platform support vary by edition

“Not stated” means the comparison does not establish that feature; it is not a claim that the feature is impossible. The comparison is about the qualities documented for each game, not an invented feature checklist.

Star Wars: Squadrons is the closest released match

StarWars.com describes Star Wars: Squadrons as a first-person starfighter game built around New Republic and Imperial fighters, strategic 5v5 battles, ship modification, and a unique single-player Star Wars story. The campaign is fully self-contained and playable in virtual reality. That combination makes it the strongest substitute for the specific request “a modern Wing Commander-style campaign” when the essential requirement is to sit in a cockpit and follow a directed military story.

“The cockpit is your home.” — StarWars.com

Why it fits the Squadron 42 brief

  • It is first-person by design. The game presents combat from the pilot’s cockpit rather than treating the ship as a distant avatar.
  • The story is complete on its own. You do not need an ongoing online world to understand the single-player campaign.
  • Its military framing is immediate. Switching between New Republic and Imperial perspectives gives the campaign a clear conflict and squadron identity.
  • Ship modification adds a layer of choice. You can adjust your fighter rather than replaying every mission with an identical loadout.
  • VR is supported. The official description specifically says the campaign is playable in VR, which can make the cockpit perspective more immersive for compatible setups.

Where it is narrower

Squadrons concentrates on starfighters. It does not promise Squadron 42’s broader blend of ship combat, on-foot first-person play, and cinematic character scenes. If your mental picture includes walking through a ship, leaving the cockpit, and moving through a larger dramatic production, treat Squadrons as a focused fighter campaign rather than a one-to-one replacement.

Choose it when

Pick Squadrons if your priority order is cockpit perspective first, authored military missions second, and open-ended exploration a distant third. It is also the sensible starting point if you want a complete campaign now instead of waiting for the Q2 2027 schedule attached to Squadron 42.

Everspace 2: the open-world action-RPG alternative

Everspace 2 is the better choice when “space campaign” means a single-player journey through a larger explorable setting. Its defining traits are an open-world structure, exploration, loot, and character-style action-RPG progression. Those systems give you reasons to leave the critical path, improve your build, and return to combat with a different sense of capability.

What you gain

  • Freedom between missions: exploration is part of the loop rather than a distraction from a fixed sequence.
  • Persistent progression: loot and character-style development make equipment and advancement central to play.
  • A single-player focus: the experience is designed around playing through your own campaign rather than depending on a shared online population.

What you give up

Everspace 2 is less like a linear military drama. Its open-world action-RPG structure changes the rhythm: you may spend time exploring and improving your setup instead of moving directly from one authored squadron mission to the next. It is not established as an on-foot, character-scene counterpart to Squadron 42, so buy it for freedom and progression, not for an exact recreation of that planned presentation.

Elite Dangerous: choose simulation depth over a scripted plot

Elite Dangerous serves a different need. It is a simulation-heavy space game set in a huge, open-ended galaxy, with trading, exploration, and emergent play. Rather than guiding you through a tightly authored campaign, it gives you a framework in which your own activities create the narrative.

Why simulation players choose it

  • Scale: the galaxy is presented as a broad space for long-term exploration.
  • Multiple careers: trading and exploration sit alongside spaceflight and combat.
  • Emergent stories: your route, ambitions, and risks matter more than a fixed sequence of cinematic scenes.

Why it is not a Squadron 42 substitute

If you want named characters, a prescribed chain of missions, and a dramatic squadron arc, Elite Dangerous is the wrong priority match. Its strength is the simulation sandbox. You supply the purpose, while Squadron 42 is intended to supply an authored campaign. Choose Elite Dangerous only if that trade is attractive rather than disappointing.

Chorus: fast arcade combat with a story thread

Chorus is worth considering when responsiveness and spectacle matter more than grounded military drama. Chorus is fast, arcade-leaning space combat with a narrative through-line. That makes it more story-driven than a pure score-attack arcade game, but its tone and handling are a weaker fit for readers specifically seeking a realistic squadron campaign.

Best reason to play

Choose Chorus for immediate, high-speed action wrapped in a continuing narrative. It can satisfy the desire to fight through a sequence of story events without requiring the slower commitment of a simulation.

Main mismatch

The arcade emphasis means it is not the first recommendation for a grounded military cockpit experience. If precise squadron procedure and a restrained campaign tone are your benchmarks, Squadrons is closer.

Wing Commander: the historical reference point

Wing Commander is not merely another recommendation on the list; it is the clearest historical reference for what Squadron 42 is intended to be. RSI’s archival FAQ explicitly uses Wing Commander when describing an offline single-player campaign. For players who want to understand the design lineage, starting with Wing Commander makes more sense than treating Squadron 42 as an entirely new format.

What to expect

The series represents campaign-led space combat built around missions and a continuing war narrative. It is the appropriate choice when authored structure matters more than modern open-world systems. However, availability and platform support vary by edition, so check the specific release before assuming it will run on your current hardware or operating system.

Who should start here

Play Wing Commander if you value the classic campaign template itself, are comfortable with older presentation, and want the closest historical context for Squadron 42’s stated ambitions. Play Squadrons instead if you want a released game with a contemporary first-person fighter presentation and VR support.

Match the game to the experience you actually want

If you want a complete military story now

Start with Star Wars: Squadrons. Its self-contained single-player campaign and first-person fighter perspective address the two most specific requirements without asking you to create your own goals.

If you want to explore between story beats

Choose Everspace 2. Its open-world structure, exploration, loot, and action-RPG progression are deliberate alternatives to a rigid mission ladder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want a galaxy-sized simulation

Choose Elite Dangerous. Accept that trading, exploration, and emergent play replace a tightly authored campaign as the main source of meaning.

If you want speed and arcade energy

Choose Chorus. Its narrative through-line gives the action context, while its arcade-leaning combat keeps the focus on momentum and spectacle.

If you want the design ancestor

Choose an appropriate Wing Commander edition. Confirm its platform support first, because availability is not uniform across the series.

What “cinematic space combat campaign” means in practice

The phrase combines several preferences that do not always appear together. A game can have a story without being linear, cockpit combat without military drama, or exploration without authored scenes. Use these questions to separate the options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Do you need a fixed plot? Squadrons and Wing Commander are the campaign-led choices. Everspace 2 includes a narrative but places it inside an open-world action-RPG structure. Elite Dangerous is primarily emergent.
  2. Must combat be experienced from the cockpit? Squadrons is the clearest documented match because its official description calls it first-person starfighter combat. The other games serve different priorities.
  3. How much freedom is desirable? Elite Dangerous offers the broadest sandbox, Everspace 2 adds open-world exploration, and Squadrons keeps attention on directed missions.
  4. Do upgrades need to be a major part of the loop? Everspace 2 foregrounds loot and character-style progression; Squadrons documents ship modification. The other descriptions do not establish progression as their defining appeal.
  5. Is leaving the ship essential? Squadron 42 is intended to combine ship combat with on-foot first-person play and cinematic character scenes. The alternatives do not establish that same blend, so none should be treated as a confirmed substitute for it.

Availability and setup checks before you buy

  • Check the exact platform. Availability can differ by edition and storefront, especially for older Wing Commander releases.
  • Confirm the edition. A series name may cover multiple releases with different compatibility and included content.
  • Verify VR requirements for Squadrons. The campaign is described as playable in VR, but you still need compatible hardware and the correct platform version.
  • Decide whether you want authored or emergent play. This single choice prevents the most common mismatch: buying a sandbox while expecting a linear war story.
  • Treat Squadron 42’s date as provisional. RSI’s current schedule is Q2 2027, and the game is not downloadable as of the October 13, 2026 support update.

Bottom line

For a released, cinematic cockpit campaign, buy Star Wars: Squadrons first. Choose Everspace 2 when exploration and RPG progression matter more than military linearity, Elite Dangerous when simulation and a huge sandbox matter more than scripted scenes, Chorus when arcade speed is the priority, and Wing Commander when you want the classic lineage Squadron 42 is designed to continue. None is a confirmed replacement for Squadron 42’s planned combination of ship combat, on-foot play, and character-driven cinematic presentation.
