If you want another deliberate, turn-based squad campaign after Star Wars Zero Company, start with XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. For a smaller, character-led team and breach encounters, try XCOM: Chimera Squad; for mercenaries and an open world, choose Jagged Alliance 3; and for squad tactics wrapped in a choice-driven RPG, play Wasteland 3. They share tactical ingredients with Zero Company, but none is a one-to-one substitute.
What makes a game feel like Star Wars Zero Company?
Star Wars Zero Company is a single-player, turn-based tactics game set during the twilight of the Clone Wars. You play as Hawks, a former Republic officer leading an unconventional team of operators. Combat is deliberate: choose what each operator does, then let the opposing side take its turn. EA and Lucasfilm Games highlight squad customization, tactical operations and investigations, and bonds between teammates that can unlock combat synergies. StarWars.com’s announcement and its gameplay guide outline those fundamentals.
That mix points to four useful ways to choose what to play after Zero Company: the depth of mission tactics, whether the team is made up of distinct characters or recruits, what happens between battles, and how much the story and relationships shape the campaign. The recommendations below each match a different part of that mix.
For release context, EA says the game launched August 28, 2026, while Steam lists August 27, 2026 as its storefront release date. EA lists PC via the EA app, Steam, and Epic Games Store, plus PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. EA’s launch announcement and the Steam listing show those respective dates and details.

Best games like Star Wars Zero Company at a glance
| Game | Best fit if you want… | How it differs from Zero Company |
|---|---|---|
| XCOM 2: War of the Chosen | Deep tactical missions plus a substantial strategy layer | Its campaign expands the XCOM 2 experience with factions, hero classes, new threats, missions, and soldier bonds. |
| XCOM: Chimera Squad | A compact, character-forward squad and varied encounter pacing | Distinct human and alien agents, breach encounters, and an interleaved turn order replace a standard XCOM campaign structure. |
| Jagged Alliance 3 | Mercenary personalities, action-point combat, and a world to manage | You hire a broad roster and operate across an open world with multiple squads. |
| Wasteland 3 | Squad tactics alongside role-playing choices and story consequences | It gives more weight to RPG progression and reactive narrative decisions. |
1. XCOM 2: War of the Chosen — closest to the tactical campaign loop
Choose XCOM 2: War of the Chosen if what you most want from Zero Company is the rhythm of preparing a team, taking it into turn-based missions, and developing its capabilities across a larger campaign. Its added factions, hero classes, mission types, threats, and soldier bonds make it the strongest match here for tactical depth joined to between-mission planning. 2K’s announcement describes the expansion’s additions.
The main difference is the weight of the strategy layer: this is the pick for someone who wants campaign-level planning to matter alongside the individual firefights. If you would rather spend less time on that broader layer and focus on a smaller set of distinct personalities, Chimera Squad is the better XCOM option.

- How to Play: 2 Squads compete in 3 rounds. The object is to get your Squad to guess the words on the cards.
- Designed for 4-20+ players ages 17+: Great for small groups and large parties. Make a night of it, or sneak in a quickie.
- 3 Rounds Per Game: Round 1 – Anything Goes. Round 2 – One Word. Round 3 – Act It Out.
- What’s Inside: 300 cards carefully created to make you laugh. Endless entertainment where no game will be like the last.
- Pro Tip: House Rules Make the Game as Easy or Difficult as You Like: You will compete, you will laugh, you will blush, you will learn something, and you will have fun.
2. XCOM: Chimera Squad — distinct agents and breach encounters
XCOM: Chimera Squad is a good fit if you want a named, character-forward team without the conventional XCOM soldier-roster feel. Its squad combines distinct human and alien agents with complementary classes. Missions can open with breach encounters, and individual turns are interleaved rather than following a simple all-one-side-then-all-the-other pattern. 2K’s announcement details the agents and encounter structure.
That makes it a different-paced alternative to Zero Company, not a replacement for its broader tactical campaign. Pick it for the defined agents and encounter design; pick XCOM 2: War of the Chosen if the campaign and strategy layer are the draw.

3. Jagged Alliance 3 — mercenary personalities and open-world control
Jagged Alliance 3 suits players who enjoy squad tactics but also want to shape a mercenary roster and manage operations across an open world. Its official site highlights action-point combat, realistic tactical encounters, and relationships among mercenaries; recruits may refuse to work with teammates they dislike. It also supports online co-op, a meaningful difference if you want to play with someone else. See the official Jagged Alliance 3 site for its combat, roster, and co-op details.
Unlike Zero Company’s focused story about Hawks and an unconventional team, this is built around hiring and managing a broader mercenary cast. It is the strongest choice here if the appeal of a squad includes roster decisions and control of territory between fights.

4. Wasteland 3 — tactical battles with a reactive RPG story
Pick Wasteland 3 if you want battles to sit within a larger role-playing story shaped by difficult decisions. Its official description presents it as a squad-based RPG with turn-based tactical combat, customizable characters, and a reactive narrative. It also offers online co-op, according to its Xbox product listing.
Where Zero Company centers on tactical operations and the bonds of a specific team, Wasteland 3 puts more emphasis on role-playing choices and story consequences. It is the best match in this list when the campaign’s narrative decisions matter as much as its combat.
