Start with Sun Haven if you want Stardew Valley’s farming, crafting, relationships and town routine, but want magic combat, monsters, dungeons and several biomes to occupy a much larger part of the game. Choose Moonstone Island for turn-based creature battles, or Core Keeper if discovering a dangerous world matters more than running a traditional farm.
Rune Factory 5 pushes furthest toward action-RPG combat, while My Time at Sandrock replaces much of the farming emphasis with workshop production and town rebuilding. Roots of Pacha is an excellent social-farming alternative only if combat is optional for you: it has no combat.

Sun Haven: the best direct answer
Sun Haven is the most natural recommendation for the exact request “Stardew Valley with more combat.” It keeps the familiar cycle of planting crops, fishing, mining, crafting, completing quests and developing relationships, then adds a fantasy setting in which magic and dungeon fighting are central activities rather than occasional interruptions.

Combat and dungeons
Combat is real-time and magic-based. You fight monsters in dungeons and other dangerous areas, so a day can be planned around preparing equipment and spells, clearing an area and bringing home resources. That gives exploration a more obvious risk-and-reward structure than Stardew Valley’s mainly mine-focused danger.
A larger world to uncover
Plarium describes multiple towns, several biomes and resources or challenges that vary by region. The result is a progression path that keeps opening new places instead of concentrating nearly all discovery in one mine. Town-building and quests connect those areas to the domestic routine, so exploration does not feel like a separate mode.
How much Stardew remains
The life-sim layer remains substantial: farming, fishing, mining, crafting, social relationships and ordinary town life all matter. That makes Sun Haven the safest choice if you want the comfort and pacing of a farming game but find Stardew Valley’s combat too limited. Its release date is listed as January 25, 2021, and Plarium’s 2025 guide reported a 9/10 Steam rating at the time of publication; ratings can change.
Moonstone Island: strategic battles and spirit collecting
Moonstone Island changes the meaning of “more combat.” Instead of adding real-time weapon action, it builds turn-based battles around collectible spirits and cards. Each encounter asks you to choose actions and manage a team, making preparation and deck decisions more important than reflexes.
Floating-island exploration
Exploration takes place across floating islands. Discovery, gathering and travel sit alongside farming, fishing and crafting, so your homestead remains useful without dominating every activity. The island structure gives the game a steady sense of finding another place to visit and another resource to bring home.
Who should choose it
Pick Moonstone Island if you enjoy creature collecting, turn-based strategy and planning a battle more than swinging a weapon in real time. It is a weaker match if your ideal alternative requires boss fights with action controls. The game’s listed release date is September 20, 2023. Plarium’s 2025 guide reported an 80/100 Metacritic score and a $19.99 Steam price; both the score and price are time-sensitive and may differ by region or sale.

Core Keeper: make exploration the main event
Core Keeper is the exploration-first option. Its farm is built underground, inside a procedurally generated world where mining, crafting, automation and survival combat are interlocked. Rather than leaving the homestead to visit a separate adventure zone, you expand through the same subterranean space that supplies your materials and threats.
Procedural discovery and bosses
Because the underground world is procedurally generated, the layout and route through it are discovery problems rather than a fixed sequence of familiar screens. Combat includes bosses, and progression depends on deciding how far to push into unexplored territory, what equipment to make and which resources to automate.
Farming without a cozy-only pace
Farming is still present, but it supports an exploration loop that includes mining, base construction and production systems. Automation lets established areas keep producing while you venture deeper. This is a stronger fit than Stardew Valley for players who want the next expedition to be the reason they start the next in-game day.
Solo or cooperative play
Core Keeper supports single-player and cooperative multiplayer. Its 1.0 release launched on Windows and Linux on August 27, 2024; console launches were reported for September 17, 2024. Those dates describe the major release rollout, not a guarantee that every platform has identical updates or features.
Rune Factory 5: the action-RPG direction
Rune Factory 5 is the choice when “more combat” should become the defining feature. In the comparison literature, it is the most action-RPG-leaning game in this group: farming and relationships support a broader combat-and-adventure structure rather than setting the pace by themselves.

Expect more emphasis on active battles, monster encounters and RPG-style progression. The farming routine still provides a productive home base, but the reason to improve it is often to support the next area, quest or fight. That balance suits players who think of Stardew Valley as an excellent social foundation that needs a much stronger adventure game attached to it.

Best fit and trade-off
Choose Rune Factory 5 if you want to control a character through a combat-focused campaign while keeping crops, crafting and relationship-building available between excursions. It is not the best pick if your priority is a quiet, open-ended farm where combat can be ignored for long stretches.
My Time at Sandrock: workshop production and a rebuilding project
My Time at Sandrock takes a different route from both Sun Haven and Rune Factory 5. Its central activity is workshop production: gathering materials, building machines, fulfilling commissions and helping rebuild a town. Action appears around quests and the surrounding areas, but the main progression is tied to making things and improving the settlement.
Exploration with a practical purpose
Exploration is closely connected to obtaining materials and advancing projects. Instead of asking you to maintain a large crop operation, the game repeatedly gives you construction and production goals that send you into nearby areas. The loop is satisfying if you prefer a visible town-development checklist to an open-ended farming schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWho should choose it
Pick Sandrock when your ideal Stardew alternative replaces crop management with crafting depth, commissions and settlement rebuilding. It is less suitable when you specifically want dungeons, monsters and boss encounters to be the centerpiece of every session.
Roots of Pacha: the no-combat alternative
Roots of Pacha is the closest social-farming substitute in the group, with festivals, romance, fishing, gathering and caves. PC Gamer described it in 2026 as “definitely the closest life sim to Stardew Valley.” That similarity is useful only if fighting is not a requirement.
The decisive limitation
Roots of Pacha has no combat. Caves and gathering areas provide exploration, but there are no monsters or battles to build a combat progression around. Recommend it to someone who wants stronger community and farming systems, not to someone searching for a farming RPG with bosses.

How to choose by the kind of combat you want
You want real-time magic and dungeons
Choose Sun Haven. It preserves the most recognizable Stardew-style routine while adding fantasy combat, monsters, dungeons, multiple towns and biome-specific challenges.
You want turn-based planning

You want survival pressure and bosses
Choose Core Keeper. Procedural underground exploration, resource management, automation and bosses make the expedition itself the main progression engine.
You want an action-RPG first
Choose Rune Factory 5. It gives combat and RPG progression more weight than the other farming-and-social options listed here.
You want crafting and a town project
Choose My Time at Sandrock. Its workshop, commissions and rebuilding goals provide a clearer production-driven structure than a traditional farm.

What “more exploration” means in each game
Exploration is not one feature. In Sun Haven, it means reaching different towns and biomes, entering dungeons and dealing with regional resources and challenges. Moonstone Island spreads discovery across floating islands. Core Keeper turns the entire game into an underground expedition whose layout is procedurally generated. Rune Factory 5 uses RPG areas and monster encounters, while Sandrock sends you outward to gather what the workshop and town projects require. Roots of Pacha offers caves and gathering spaces but deliberately removes combat.
This distinction matters when choosing. A player who wants a large, changing map should favor Core Keeper. Someone who wants a connected fantasy world with a familiar town-and-farm rhythm should favor Sun Haven. Someone who wants exploration mainly as a source of crafting materials may prefer Sandrock.
What to expect from the farming and relationship systems
Sun Haven retains the broadest Stardew-like balance: crops, fishing, mining, crafting, quests, relationships and town life all remain meaningful beside combat. Rune Factory 5 also keeps farming and relationships substantial, but its action-RPG structure pulls more attention toward battles. Moonstone Island retains farming, fishing and crafting while making creature collection and turn-based fights the strategic center.

Core Keeper treats farming as one system inside a survival sandbox. Automation and base production matter because they support deeper exploration, not because the game is trying to recreate a seasonal village calendar. Sandrock shifts even further toward workshop output and commissions. Roots of Pacha preserves the social and farming emphasis most closely, but without any combat fallback.
Release and value notes to check before buying
Release dates, review scores and prices change in meaning over time. Sun Haven’s January 25, 2021 date and Moonstone Island’s September 20, 2023 date are listed reference points. The 9/10 Steam rating reported for Sun Haven and the 80/100 Metacritic score reported for Moonstone Island came from Plarium’s 2025 guide, so they should be treated as dated snapshots rather than permanent scores.
The $19.99 Steam price reported for Moonstone Island in that same 2025 guide was also a snapshot. Check the current store page for your region, edition and any sale before purchasing. Core Keeper’s Windows/Linux 1.0 launch on August 27, 2024 and reported console launch on September 17, 2024 identify its major release milestones, but platform versions can differ in update timing.
Final recommendation
For one game that most directly answers “Stardew Valley with more combat and exploration,” choose Sun Haven. Moonstone Island is better for turn-based spirit strategy, Core Keeper for underground discovery and co-op, Rune Factory 5 for action-RPG combat, and My Time at Sandrock for workshop-led town rebuilding. Roots of Pacha belongs on the list only when you want the farming-and-relationships side of the formula and can do without combat.
