The best alternative depends on which part of State of Decay 2 you want to keep. Choose Project Zomboid for a deeper survival sandbox, or 7 Days to Die for crafting, fortification, and co-op base defense. Neither reproduces the full mix of survivor-community management, scavenging, and third-person action.
What makes State of Decay 2 distinctive?
Undead Labs describes State of Decay 2 as a survival game about gathering survivors, scavenging, building a community, fortifying shelters, and making choices about the group’s future. That blend matters when choosing games like State of Decay 2: a title may share its zombies and crafting without sharing its community-management loop.
The Xbox listing describes facilities including a garden, infirmary, workshop, and watch tower, and supports cross-platform multiplayer with up to three friends. The official page presents both solo and co-op play. The Xbox store listing is for Juggernaut Edition, which it says includes the base game and three add-on packs, and lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. Store content and availability can change, so consult the listing for current purchase details.
Best games like State of Decay 2, by what you want to keep
| Game | Best fit | What it shares | What feels different |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project Zomboid | Survival-system depth | Scavenging, crafting, building, and multiplayer | Isometric presentation and a hardcore, open-ended sandbox; not the same third-person community-management focus |
| 7 Days to Die | Crafting, base fortification, and co-op defense | Gathering materials, building defenses, and surviving zombie threats with others | First-person shooting and tower-defense elements rather than a survivor-community loop |
Project Zomboid: best for a demanding survival sandbox

- FUN & EXCITING GAMEPLAY - Build defenses during the day to prepare for zombie chicken attacks at night! Gameplay flows between day & night cycles that will keep players on the edge of their seat!
- GREAT FOR FAMILIES & FRIENDS OF ALL AGES - Zombie Chickens is the perfect card game for family game night, hanging out with friends, or playing solo in a round of zombie-fighting solitaire! 1-4 players, ages 9+, gameplay lasts around 35 minutes.
- 3 WAYS TO PLAY! You can play Zombie Chickens as a COMPETITIVE, COOPERATIVE, or SOLO game! In the Competitive game, players battle to defend their farms from zombie attacks until the last player standing wins! In the Cooperative game, players band together to defend a single farm in hopes of surviving until a rescue party arrives! In the Solitaire game, 1 player battles hordes of zombie chickens to survive as many nights as possible!
- SILLY YET STRATEGIC - Each zombie has 1 or more traits (flying, invisible, climbing, bulletproof, fireproof, timid, exploding) that you must overcome in order to defeat it. For example, a flamethrower is a great defense on your farm until a fireproof or invisible zombie comes along! So choose your defenses wisely and watch out for various events that can change the course of the game!
- CAN YOU SURVIVE THE BOK-BOK-ALYPSE? Or will the zombie chickens prevail?
Pick it if you want survival needs and self-directed play to take priority over managing a roster of survivors. Its isometric viewpoint and hardcore sandbox emphasis make it a different experience from State of Decay 2’s character-focused third-person action and community decisions.
7 Days to Die: best for fortifying a base with friends
The Fun Pimps describe 7 Days to Die as a combination of first-person shooting, survival horror, tower defense, and role-playing. The game’s feature description highlights crafting and repairing equipment, building defenses, and cooperating or competing with other players. Its Steam listing is a useful place to check current details.

- Brand new rules for cooperative play
- Four new zombie figures
- Fully compatible with other Zombies!!! Editions
Choose it when the satisfying part of State of Decay 2 is gathering resources, improving a defensible home, and surviving alongside friends. It shifts the focus to first-person combat and defending a constructed base, rather than developing a survivor community. The Fun Pimps’ Steam description says the game has sold more than 20 million copies; the page does not date that figure.

- You want deeper survival systems: Start with Project Zomboid for its scavenging, crafting, farming, fishing, and customizable sandbox.
- You want co-op base building and defense: Try 7 Days to Die for crafting, fortifications, and cooperative play.
- You want the same kind of survivor-community management: Neither recommendation is established as a direct match for that specific feature. State of Decay 2’s group decisions and community development are central to its identity.
- You want third-person action: Keep the viewpoint in mind: Project Zomboid is isometric, while 7 Days to Die emphasizes first-person shooting. Neither is a like-for-like substitute for State of Decay 2’s third-person combat.
