It will set the grid for Saturday’s Sprint; Saturday’s Grand Prix qualifying will continue to determine the Sunday Grand Prix grid. That means two separate qualifying routes and two grids.
How MotoGP qualifying will work in 2027
The change is a dedicated Friday session for the Sprint, not a replacement for Grand Prix qualifying. The championship’s announcement confirms the new structure for every round from 2027.

What the 2027 MotoGP weekend looks like
Friday: practice and Sprint qualifying
- FP1: 45 minutes.
- FP2: 30 minutes and explicitly not timed to determine entry into another session.
- Sprint qualifying: 15 minutes; it sets Saturday’s Sprint grid.
Saturday: Grand Prix qualifying and the Sprint
- FP3: 20 minutes.
- Grand Prix Q1: 15 minutes, with all riders taking part.
- Grand Prix Q2: 15 minutes, with the top 12 from Q1 advancing.
- MotoGP Sprint: starts from the grid set in Friday’s Sprint qualifying.
Sunday: support races and the Grand Prix
Moto3 and Moto2 races precede the MotoGP Grand Prix in the announced Sunday plan. Before the Grand Prix, the pitlane opens for 10 minutes to allow multiple sighting laps. MotoGP says this replaces the MotoGP Warm Up track-time slot. The Grand Prix grid comes from Saturday’s Q1 and Q2, not Friday’s Sprint qualifying.

Does Sprint qualifying set the Sunday MotoGP grid?
No. Friday’s Sprint qualifying sets the grid for Saturday’s Sprint. Saturday’s Grand Prix Q1 and Q2 set the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix. The sessions are separate even though both are qualifying sessions in the same weekend.
What “permanent” means here
MotoGP says the format will apply at every round from 2027, making it a standardized championship-wide arrangement. “Permanent” should be understood in that sense: the announcement does not mean the sporting rules can never be changed in the future.

Motorsport.com reported on 7 October 2026 that teams approved the change in a vote at the Red Bull Ring. The championship announcement confirms the schedule; it is not a substitute for detailed regulatory wording, which is not established by the announcement.

MotoGP says the new weekend balances spectacle and added stakes with track time for riders, teams and factories. That is the organizer’s stated aim; the announcement does not provide measured evidence of the change’s effects.
