Tearscape’s own announcement calls it another top-down, 2D Soulslike metroidvania and specifically points its audience toward it. Mina the Hollower is the best adjacent choice if your priority is a Game Boy Color-inspired Zelda presentation paired with demanding combat, although its healing and world progression work differently.
The useful way to compare these games is not by the labels alone. Look at perspective and art style, how exploration and shortcuts are arranged, what combat asks of your stamina and healing, how death is handled, and whether classic Zelda-style item gating and puzzles drive progression.

What “like Tearscape” actually means
Tearscape is a specific hybrid rather than a generic retro action game. NERDS TAKE OVER developed and published it, and Steam lists its release date as February 2, 2026. The store describes it as a 2D, top-down Gothic action-adventure with pixel art inspired by Game Boy Color classics. Its loop combines deliberate, dodge-focused fighting with interconnected exploration.
That combination creates several separate comparison tests:

- View and presentation: Is the game top-down, 2D and deliberately retro, or does it only share a broad pixel-art look?
- World structure: Does the map fold back on itself with shortcuts, secrets and dungeons, or is it mostly a sequence of separate stages?
- Combat pressure: Are stamina, dodge timing, limited healing and dangerous bosses central, or is the fighting primarily an accessory to exploration?
- Progression language: Does the game use Zelda-like tools, puzzles and ability-gated routes, or does it rely on a different form of advancement?
Using those axes prevents a common mistake: calling any top-down adventure a “Soulslike Zelda.” The label is useful as a search term, but the actual feel comes from how these systems interact.
Tearscape’s baseline: the features alternatives need to match
Combat built around stamina and evasion
Steam’s description identifies stamina management and precise, dodge-focused combat as defining features. Healing is limited to a small supply of flasks, so taking damage has a resource cost rather than being something you can erase indefinitely. Upgradeable stats give you a way to strengthen the character, while the combat remains centered on timing and positioning instead of simply holding an attack button.
An interconnected Gothic map
The world is nonlinear and interconnected. Shortcuts and hidden routes connect areas that initially appear separate, and dungeons and bosses provide landmarks inside that larger structure. Exploration is therefore part of the challenge: finding a secret or opening a shortcut can change how safely you reach a later encounter.
Tools that serve both fighting and traversal
Hidden tools can help in combat and open routes during exploration. That dual role is important when judging alternatives. A game may have items, but it is closer to Tearscape when discovering one changes both how you approach enemies and which parts of the map you can reach.

Retro inspiration without being a simple remake
The Game Boy Color influence describes the visual language, not a promise that every system follows an older Zelda template. Tearscape’s official store wording calls it a Gothic action-adventure that blends fast-paced combat, exploration and that specific pixel-art inspiration.

Tombwater: the closest alternative
Why it earns the top recommendation
Tearscape’s official announcement describes Tombwater as “another 2D soulslike metroidvania with a top-down pixel art style” and says Tearscape fans will likely enjoy it. That is unusually direct evidence for a recommendation: it covers the same perspective, the same broad hybrid of exploration and Soulslike combat, and a comparable retro presentation. The announcement also says the developers partnered on a Tearscape and Tombwater bundle, reinforcing that the two games are being presented to overlapping audiences.
GamesRadar characterizes Tombwater as a Soulslike Western. Its coverage also connects developer Max Mraz’s earlier game, Yarntown, with a Zelda-like tribute to Bloodborne. That context supports the exploration-and-combat comparison without requiring you to treat Tombwater as a direct Zelda clone.

What the shared formula implies
If you want the closest structural follow-up to Tearscape, Tombwater is the logical first stop because its description explicitly combines a top-down view, pixel art, metroidvania exploration and Soulslike combat. You can reasonably expect the appeal to come from learning dangerous encounters while gradually understanding a connected world, rather than from a purely linear action campaign.

The metroidvania designation also signals that movement through the map matters. In this context, “metroidvania” should be read as an exploration framework, not as proof that every ability, puzzle or gate works exactly as it does in Tearscape. The announcement does not provide a complete list of Tombwater’s healing rules, stamina behavior, death recovery or upgrade economy.
Setting and tone
Tombwater’s Western identity is a meaningful difference from Tearscape’s Gothic world. The shared mechanics may appeal to the same player, but the atmosphere and fiction are not interchangeable. Choose it for the underlying top-down Soulslike-metroidvania structure first, then decide whether a Western setting suits your tastes.
Who should start with Tombwater
- You want another 2D, top-down game rather than a change to a side-scrolling or fully 3D perspective.
- You care more about connected exploration and difficult encounters than about reproducing classic Zelda puzzles exactly.
- You prefer a recommendation with an explicit connection to Tearscape’s intended audience.
- You are comfortable with a different setting and with checking the final release details for systems that the announcement does not specify.
Mina the Hollower: the best adjacent pick
Where Mina overlaps
Creative Bloq describes Mina the Hollower as a top-down Zelda-like with a Game Boy Color-inspired aesthetic. That makes it the strongest visual and structural alternative for readers whose first attraction to Tearscape is the compact retro presentation. Its combat also draws on Bloodborne and Soulslike mechanics, so the game is not merely a nostalgic adventure with low-pressure fighting.
Death carries a tangible cost: Creative Bloq notes that currency is dropped after you die. Healing is constrained by a limited supply of vials, and optional difficulty modifiers let players adjust the challenge. Those elements create the same kind of tension that makes limited flasks and careful dodging meaningful in Tearscape, even though the exact systems are not identical.

The crucial progression difference
Mina’s world is not gated by item progression in the same way as Zelda. That distinction matters if your favorite part of Tearscape is collecting a tool, returning to an earlier region and opening a previously impossible route. Mina can still deliver discovery and backtracking, but you should not assume that every locked path follows the classic Zelda pattern of dungeon item, new ability and newly accessible rooms.
Who should choose Mina
- Retro top-down presentation is your highest priority.
- You want challenging combat with limited healing and a death-recovery risk.
- You like optional difficulty controls that can change the level of pressure.
- You are happy with exploration that does not reproduce Zelda’s item-gated progression exactly.
Tunic and Death’s Door: useful community leads, not verified matches
A Reddit discussion asking for a “true Soulslike x Zeldalike” names Tunic and Death’s Door as immediate possibilities for one participant. That is useful evidence of how players describe this hybrid, but it is anecdotal. The cited discussion does not establish enough mechanical detail to rank either game against Tearscape on stamina, healing, map structure or death recovery.
Treat both as titles to investigate if you are broadening your search, not as equivalent recommendations. Before choosing one, check whether its perspective, combat demands and progression match the particular part of Tearscape you enjoy. A game can feel Zelda-like in presentation while offering a very different combat loop, or feel Soulslike in difficulty while lacking an interconnected map.
Choose by the part of Tearscape you want to preserve
If you want the nearest overall structure
Start with Tombwater. It is the only alternative in this group that Tearscape’s own announcement explicitly frames as another top-down 2D Soulslike metroidvania for the same audience.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
If retro presentation comes first
Choose Mina the Hollower. Its Game Boy Color-inspired look and top-down Zelda-like framing are directly documented, and its combat has Soulslike and Bloodborne influences. Accept that its world progression does not use Zelda-style item gating in exactly the same way.
If you mainly want demanding combat
Prioritize the descriptions of each game’s recovery systems rather than relying on the word “Soulslike.” Tearscape establishes stamina, precise dodges and limited flasks. Mina establishes dropped currency, limited vials and optional difficulty modifiers. Tombwater is confirmed as a Soulslike, but the cited announcement does not spell out every combat resource or death rule.
If secrets and shortcuts are the attraction
Tearscape’s nonlinear, interconnected map is the benchmark. Tombwater’s metroidvania description makes it the most promising alternative on the available evidence. Mina may still appeal, but its progression model differs enough that you should not assume the same ability-gated loop.

None of the available descriptions proves a one-to-one match for Tearscape’s hidden tools, dungeons and shortcut design. Mina is explicitly described as not using Zelda-style item gating in the same way, while Tombwater’s announcement emphasizes its Soulslike-metroidvania identity rather than promising a specific puzzle formula.
How to evaluate another candidate yourself
When a new recommendation claims to be a Soulslike Zelda, use this checklist before treating it as a Tearscape alternative:
- Confirm the camera. “Top-down” can mean a fixed overhead view, an angled 3D camera or a perspective that changes during combat. Tearscape’s reference point is 2D and top-down.
- Look for a connected map. Search for explicit mention of shortcuts, backtracking, secrets or linked regions. A list of separate levels is a different experience.
- Identify the combat resources. Check whether stamina, dodge timing, limited healing and boss learning are core systems or just marketing language.
- Read the death rules. Find out whether currency, experience or another resource is dropped, lost permanently or recovered automatically.
- Separate tools from keys. Tearscape’s hidden tools assist both traversal and combat. A single-use key that opens one door does not create the same progression dynamic.
- Check the Zelda influence precisely. Determine whether dungeons, puzzles and ability-gated routes are central, optional or absent.
- Verify current platform information. Release timing, editions and hardware support can change. Do not infer a physical copy, a required controller or compatibility with a particular handheld from a general digital store listing.
Availability and evidence limits
Steam lists Tearscape as releasing on February 2, 2026 and presents it as a digital game with general controller support. The listing does not establish a physical edition, collector’s version, required accessory or verified compatibility with a specific device. Prices, review totals and platform availability are volatile and are not useful as permanent comparisons here.
The recommendation strength is therefore uneven by design. Tombwater has the clearest documented connection because the official Tearscape announcement names it for this audience. Mina’s similarities and differences are described in Creative Bloq’s review. Tunic and Death’s Door remain community suggestions from a Reddit discussion rather than mechanically verified matches. Keeping those distinctions visible makes the list more useful than treating every top-down action game as the same hybrid.
