For a closer match to its promise of demanding combat mastery, try Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Neither is a direct substitute for Valor Mortis’s first-person viewpoint, Napoleonic setting, or blend of swords, firearms, and magic—but each matches a different part of what makes the upcoming game distinctive.
Valor Mortis, from One More Level, is scheduled to launch October 13, 2026. Its announced features include parries, dashes, finishers, boss fights, exploration, and a mix of melee, guns, and magic. What makes a game feel like Valor Mortis?
Valor Mortis is a first-person action Soulslike set in an alternate, plague-corrupted version of the Napoleonic era. Its protagonist, William, is a soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée who returns from death. The official Steam listing describes a combat and exploration mix built around swords, firearms, and magic, while developer announcements also highlight parries, dashes, finishers, challenging bosses, secrets, shortcuts, and sidequests.

For the Soulslike loop of checkpoints, lost currency, bosses, and backtracking, Dark Souls III is the clearest fit. For learning enemy patterns and improving through repeated attempts, Sekiro is a strong combat comparison. For first-person action and the developer’s movement lineage, Ghostrunner offers context, but it is not the closest Soulslike alternative.

Best games like Valor Mortis, by similarity
Dark Souls III: closest match for the overall Soulslike format
Choose Dark Souls III if you are looking for the kind of structure Valor Mortis is drawing on: dangerous routes, checkpoints, boss encounters, backtracking, and recovery of lost currency after death. A developer community manager described Valor Mortis as much closer to Dark Souls than to Dishonored, and reported a loop involving recovered souls, bonfire-like checkpoints, bosses, and returning to uncover secrets. Dark Souls III is a useful recommendation within that series and format; the developer’s comparison was to Dark Souls generally, not specifically to the third game. [GamesRadar+ developer Q&A]
The important difference is perspective and setting. Dark Souls III is not a first-person Napoleonic action game, and it does not recreate Valor Mortis’s announced combination of swords, firearms, and magic. Play it for the genre framework rather than as a one-to-one mechanical match.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: best for combat mastery
Pick Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if the appeal is reading opponents, learning attack patterns, and overcoming demanding fights. In a game director AMA, Valor Mortis’s director named Sekiro among their favorite Soulslikes and described the satisfaction of mastering difficult challenges. That supports a comparison around combat learning and difficulty, not a claim that Valor Mortis copies Sekiro’s specific systems. [Game director AMA]
Sekiro is therefore a good choice if you want combat to reward patience and precision. It is a less direct match for Valor Mortis’s announced mixture of firearms, magic, and first-person movement.

Bloodborne: a secondary pick for dark, challenging action
Bloodborne is worth considering if you want a dark world and punishing action. The Valor Mortis director included it among their personal top three Soulslikes in the AMA, but the available comparison does not establish it as a close match for Valor Mortis’s mechanics, viewpoint, or Napoleonic setting. Treat it as a genre recommendation rather than a direct analogue. [Game director AMA]
Ghostrunner: useful for first-person action and movement lineage
Ghostrunner is relevant because One More Level developed both games. The developer has said Valor Mortis carries over elements of platforming and finishers from its earlier franchise. That makes Ghostrunner useful context for the studio’s first-person action background, not the best choice if your priority is a Soulslike progression loop. The official Valor Mortis listing and announcements describe the crossover in terms of action and movement elements.

Dishonored: an influence, not the closest substitute
Dishonored may come up because the developer has cited it as an influence. The same reported comments distinguish that influence from the game’s format: Valor Mortis is not really a stealth game and is closer to Dark Souls in structure. Choose Dishonored for its own stealth-action approach, not because it is the strongest match for Valor Mortis’s Soulslike design. [GamesRadar+ developer Q&A]

What to know about Valor Mortis before launch
As of October 11, 2026, Valor Mortis had not launched; its announced release date is October 13, 2026. The official Steam page and PlayStation listing give that date, with the PlayStation page naming Lyrical Games, LLC as publisher. Recommendations here are based on announced features and reported developer comments, not on a full-release review.
The developer says the demo went offline September 8 and that its selected chapters were separately recreated for a Steam event. It also said that carrying later optimization, balancing, and bug fixes into those demo versions was not straightforward. The developer reported feedback on combat readability, boss difficulty and variety, performance, and the balance between platforming and combat. As a result, demo impressions should not be treated as a verdict on the final game. [Official Steam listing and announcements]
