If you want a game like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, start with Disco Elysium – The Final Cut for investigation, dialogue and moral ambiguity, or choose Cyberpunk 2077 for the closest first-person dark-city action. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the strongest companion-focused alternative, Red Dead Redemption 2 delivers the most cinematic character drama, and Baldur’s Gate 3 offers the broadest consequence-driven role-playing at the cost of a radically different, turn-based format.
These games overlap with Bloodlines 2 in different ways rather than copying its premise. Bloodlines 2 is an action RPG set in Seattle’s vampire court, built around dark secrets, a neo-noir murder mystery and two perspectives: Elder vampire Phyre and Malkavian detective Fabien. The recommendations below separate the features that matter—investigation, first-person immersion, faction politics, companion relationships, authored protagonists and visible consequences—so you can pick the right substitute instead of an arbitrary list of dark RPGs.

What makes a useful Bloodlines 2 alternative?
A good match does not need vampires. It needs to reproduce one or more of the experiences that make Bloodlines 2 appealing: entering a dangerous social order, investigating secrets, shaping conversations, inhabiting a strongly defined protagonist, or watching choices alter alliances and outcomes.

Best alternatives at a glance
| Game | Best for | Closest overlap | Most important difference |

| Disco Elysium – The Final Cut | Investigation, dialogue and moral ambiguity | Noir detective work, skills, branching choices and oppressive atmosphere | Little conventional action combat; isometric presentation |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | First-person urban action and customization | Dark city, story-rich quests, first-person RPG perspective | Cyberpunk setting, heavier gunplay and open-world scale |

1. Disco Elysium – The Final Cut: the closest investigation and dialogue match
Why it fits
Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is the best choice when the part of Bloodlines 2 that interests you most is questioning people, interpreting clues and deciding what kind of person your detective becomes. Its storefront description calls it “a groundbreaking role playing game” in which you are a detective with “a unique skill system” and a whole city to carve your path across. The listed tags—Story Rich, Choices Matter, Detective, Noir and CRPG—map directly to the investigative and political side of Bloodlines 2.
Instead of treating skills as a simple damage or accuracy bonus, the game turns them into competing voices in your head. Building one capability can open a line of reasoning while making another less reliable, so character creation changes how scenes are understood rather than merely changing combat numbers. Interrogations, favors, bribes and moral compromises become the core verbs. The official description explicitly allows you to “crack murders or take bribes,” a concise illustration of its range of possible approaches.
What you give up
This is an isometric, conversation-first RPG with little conventional action combat. If you expect Bloodlines 2’s real-time attacks, supernatural powers or first-person movement, the change is substantial. Its tension comes from language, psychology, failed checks and the consequences of an unstable investigation, not from clearing rooms. The city is also a concentrated detective space rather than a large action sandbox.

Choose it when
- You want the strongest noir investigation and the most textually inventive skill system.
- You care more about dialogue branches and moral ambiguity than real-time fighting.
- You prefer a game that lets failure become part of the story instead of simply reloading a missed attack.
Released on 15 October 2019, it is the most direct substitute for Bloodlines 2’s detective and conversation loop, even though its camera and combat model are fundamentally different.

2. Cyberpunk 2077: the closest first-person dark-city action RPG
Why it fits
Cyberpunk 2077 is the strongest match for players who want to walk through a dangerous modern metropolis in first person, customize a protagonist and combine combat with story-rich quests. Its official description calls it “an open-world, action-adventure RPG set in the dark future of Night City.” The storefront tags include Story Rich, First-Person, Atmospheric, RPG and Character Customization—the same broad combination of immersion, urban menace and build ownership that makes Bloodlines 2 attractive.
Night City replaces vampire court etiquette with corporate power, gangs and technological inequality. That setting changes the themes, but both games frame the city as a network of interests rather than a backdrop. Conversations, investigations and missions can expose competing agendas, while your chosen abilities determine whether you solve a problem through force, stealth, technology or persuasion. The open-world structure also gives you more room to leave the main mystery, pursue side stories and return with a different build.
What you give up
Its scale and combat emphasis make it less intimate than a focused court-intrigue story. Gunplay, driving and open-world traversal occupy more time, and the cyberpunk setting has no vampire clans, supernatural masquerade or occult social hierarchy. Character customization is broader than an authored elder vampire’s identity, but that freedom can make the protagonist’s personality feel less tightly authored from scene to scene.

- You want first-person movement, real-time combat and a dark urban setting above all else.
- You value build experimentation and an open world more than a tightly bounded detective plot.
- You want side quests that expand the city’s factions and characters rather than a single investigation.
The game released on 9 December 2020. Treat it as a perspective-and-pacing match, not a supernatural one: its strongest overlap is the feeling of being a customizable operator inside a hostile city.

3. Dragon Age: The Veilguard: the best companion-led political fantasy
Why it fits
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the right recommendation when your priority is the people around the protagonist. Electronic Arts describes it as a single-player RPG in which you “Unite a team of seven companions, each with rich lives, deep backstories, and their own expertise and unique abilities.” You play Rook, a customizable protagonist whose relationships and decisions unfold amid faction conflict.
That structure answers a question Bloodlines 2 may leave some players asking: what would this kind of story feel like if the supporting cast had a larger mechanical and emotional role? Seven companions give you a roster to learn, combine and support. Their expertise affects how a party tackles danger, while their backstories make political stakes personal. The focus on identity, loyalty and factional pressure makes it a useful alternative for readers who want the social consequences of a supernatural court, even though the setting is fantasy rather than modern Seattle.
What you give up
The perspective and combat language are different. This is a party-based fantasy RPG, not a first-person urban action game, and its conflicts are expressed through companions, factions and fantasy threats instead of vampire law and hidden predation. The customizable Rook also creates a different relationship to the protagonist than playing an established elder with a specific place in the world.
Choose it when
- Companion loyalty, banter and personal arcs matter more than detective mechanics.
- You want faction politics presented through a team whose members have distinct expertise.
- You prefer a customizable hero and party decisions to a solitary first-person power fantasy.
Among these alternatives, it is the clearest answer to “What should I play after Bloodlines 2 if I want better companions?” Its overlap is social and structural, not visual or mechanical.

4. Red Dead Redemption 2: the strongest authored-character drama
Why it fits
Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan through an open-world outlaw story shaped by ideals, loyalty and divisions inside his gang. Rockstar’s official description opens with: “America, 1899. Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde Gang are outlaws on the run.” That premise makes the game a powerful alternative for players who want a mature protagonist caught between allegiance to a group and an increasingly difficult personal conscience.
Like Bloodlines 2, it uses a strongly authored central figure rather than asking you to invent every biographical detail. Decisions gain weight because Arthur already has history, obligations and relationships. The world’s atmosphere is deliberate and patient: travel, camp life, conversations and small acts can establish character as effectively as a major mission. Internal gang divisions provide a political pressure cooker, although the politics are those of an outlaw family rather than an occult court.
What you give up
This is a western with a slower, more cinematic rhythm and a lighter emphasis on conventional RPG builds. You will not find vampire powers, clan diplomacy or a branching detective skill system. Choices are often expressed through honor, loyalty and the direction of Arthur’s story rather than through a large menu of dialogue permutations. Its open world also asks for more time between major revelations.

5. Baldur’s Gate 3: the broadest choice-driven CRPG
Why it fits
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the recommendation for players who want choices to reach into nearly every part of the role-playing system. It treats decisions as mechanical possibilities, not only as dialogue branches: party composition, abilities, positioning, relationships and the order in which you tackle problems can all change what becomes possible later. That makes it the broadest systemic alternative to Bloodlines 2’s promise of consequential role-playing.
The game also makes companions central. You manage a party rather than a lone investigator, and the group’s abilities and opinions shape solutions. A conversation can lead to a fight, an alliance, a deception or an entirely different route through an objective. This is useful if you are looking for “Bloodlines 2 but with more freedom,” because the game encourages experimentation and accepts unconventional plans that a tightly authored action RPG may not support.
What you give up
The difference is not minor: this is a turn-based, party-based CRPG with an isometric presentation. Combat pauses for planning instead of flowing in real time, and the camera shows the party from above rather than placing you behind one character’s eyes. Its fantasy setting also replaces urban supernatural politics with a broader adventure framework. If your priority is first-person immersion or noir mood, Disco Elysium or Cyberpunk 2077 will feel closer.

Choose it when
- You want the widest range of solutions and the clearest chain from decision to consequence.
- You enjoy managing a party whose abilities and relationships are both strategic resources.
- You are willing to trade Bloodlines 2’s real-time perspective for turn-based planning and systemic freedom.
Think of it as a mechanical departure that preserves the spirit of consequential role-playing better than any one-to-one imitation could.
How to choose your next game
- Put investigation first: choose Disco Elysium – The Final Cut. It is the only option here built primarily around detective reasoning, interrogation and a skill system that changes what you perceive.
- Put first-person urban action first: choose Cyberpunk 2077. It keeps the strongest viewpoint, city-scale immersion and real-time combat overlap.
- Put companions and faction relationships first: choose Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Its seven-companion structure makes the party itself the narrative center.
- Put authored character drama first: choose Red Dead Redemption 2. Arthur’s identity and loyalties give every major turn more personal context.
- Put systemic freedom first: choose Baldur’s Gate 3. Accept the turn-based format in exchange for the broadest range of reactive solutions.
Which alternative is closest on each major axis?
| Axis | Closest choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First-person viewpoint | Cyberpunk 2077 | It is explicitly a first-person, open-world action RPG. |
| Noir investigation | Disco Elysium – The Final Cut | Detective work, interrogation and noir are its central activities. |
| Companion relationships | Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Seven companions have individual histories, expertise and abilities. |
| Authored protagonist | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Arthur Morgan’s established identity drives the drama. |
| Choice breadth | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Turn-based party play supports many systemic approaches to problems. |
| Urban supernatural atmosphere | None is a direct match | Each alternative changes the setting; the overlap is in structure, tone or play style rather than vampire lore. |
Practical expectations before you buy
Do not equate “choice-driven” with one specific kind of branching
In Disco Elysium, choice often means how your detective thinks, speaks and fails. In Cyberpunk 2077, it is tied to builds, missions and the scale of an open city. Dragon Age: The Veilguard emphasizes companions and factions, while Red Dead Redemption 2 concentrates on an authored life and its loyalties. Baldur’s Gate 3 makes choice systemic, allowing party tools and physical positioning to create solutions. Decide which form of consequence you actually want before using a recommendation label.
Check the format you can enjoy for dozens of hours
- If first-person movement is essential, begin with Cyberpunk 2077.
- If reading and dialogue are the main pleasure, begin with Disco Elysium – The Final Cut.
- If you like managing a cast, choose Dragon Age: The Veilguard or Baldur’s Gate 3.
- If you want a long, cinematic journey with a fixed lead, choose Red Dead Redemption 2.
Verify current platform and edition details
Availability, patches, editions and pricing can change by platform and territory. Bloodlines 2’s launch information covers PC and consoles and lists Casual, Easy, Normal and Hard modes, but those details should still be checked against the current store listing. Apply the same check to whichever alternative you select, especially if you need a particular console generation, language option or edition.
Bottom line: the right substitute depends on what you miss
Choose Disco Elysium – The Final Cut for the closest detective, dialogue and moral-choice experience. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for first-person action in a hostile city. Choose Dragon Age: The Veilguard for a companion-led political fantasy, Red Dead Redemption 2 for cinematic authored drama, and Baldur’s Gate 3 for the most expansive, consequence-heavy role-playing system. None reproduces Seattle’s vampire court, but each preserves a different reason to enter it.
