If you want something to play before Stranger Than Heaven, start with Yakuza 0 or another Yakuza/Like a Dragon game: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is making the new game, and SEGA identifies those series as part of the studio’s catalogue. That makes them the clearest same-developer picks—not confirmed replicas of Stranger Than Heaven’s combat or story.
What makes a game a good pick before Stranger Than Heaven?
Stranger Than Heaven is an upcoming action-adventure from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. SEGA describes a story that follows Makoto Daito across five decades and five cities inspired by a Japan that might have been. It pairs violent action with Makoto’s musical talent and later work as a showman. Those elements point toward three useful ways to choose a game now: follow the developer, seek a character-led crime drama, or pick an action-focused entry while accepting that its mechanics may differ.
SEGA names Yakuza and Like a Dragon among RGG Studio’s established series, making them the strongest confirmed connection. The available announcements do not establish that any older game shares the upcoming title’s new combat system, five-era structure, or exact historical settings. Treat the choices below as recommendations based on broad appeal and studio lineage, not one-to-one comparisons. SEGA’s RGG Studio announcement

Yakuza 0: start with RGG’s crime-drama side
If you want one straightforward starting point, try Yakuza 0. It is a recognizable entry point into the Yakuza branch of RGG’s catalogue and a sensible choice if what interests you is the prospect of an RGG story built around crime, characters, and dramatic turns. That is a recommendation based on the developer connection; it is not a claim that the two games share a plot, era, or combat design. Check the edition and platform listing before buying, since availability varies by platform and edition.

Other Yakuza and Like a Dragon games: choose the format that appeals
RGG’s broader Yakuza and Like a Dragon catalogue is the next place to look if you already know the studio or want another of its stories. The series encompasses different individual games and formats, so check the specific entry’s description before choosing: the common thread supported here is the studio, not a promise that every title plays like Stranger Than Heaven.
Choose an action-focused RGG game if combat is your priority
SEGA presents Stranger Than Heaven as an action-adventure with a highly flexible combat system. A previous action-focused RGG title may suit you if you mainly want action from the same studio, but its controls and mechanics may be different. A June 11, 2026 Xbox Wire hands-on report by Jeff Rubenstein describes a demo in which attacks on the left and right sides were assigned to shoulder buttons and triggers. That is a preview account, not a description of a game you can play now or evidence that an older title has the same system. Xbox Wire’s hands-on report

The cities are presented as settings inspired by a Japan that might have been; do not read that premise as a promise of a documentary account of those places or periods.
