To trade directly between Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, use two Game Boy Advance systems connected with a Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable. In both games, go to the upstairs floor of a Pokémon Center and use the Cable Club trade counter.
What you need
- Two Game Boy Advance systems: one running Pokémon Ruby and the other Pokémon Sapphire.
- A Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable connecting the systems.
- In each game, the Pokédex and at least two Pokémon in the party, as specified by a specialist walkthrough.
The walkthrough describes this as a GBA-to-GBA method. The GBA Wireless Adapter does not work with Ruby or Sapphire, and a Nintendo DS is not a substitute for the two GBA systems in this setup. See the Ruby and Sapphire trading walkthrough.
How to make the trade
- Connect the two Game Boy Advance systems with the Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable, with Ruby running on one system and Sapphire on the other.
- In each game, confirm that you have obtained the Pokédex from Professor Birch and have at least two Pokémon in your party.
- On both systems, go upstairs in a Pokémon Center and speak to the attendant at the middle counter to enter the Cable Club. The Cable Club trade facility is on the second floor of every Pokémon Center. The link-trade reference confirms cable trading among Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen.
- Follow the in-game prompts. The games will ask you to save, choose a Pokémon, review the other player’s offer, and confirm the exchange.
Compatibility and other transfer options
Trading between different language versions
Ruby and Sapphire have no language restrictions on trading. Separate restrictions apply to mixing records between Japanese and non-Japanese games; those are not restrictions on the trade itself. See the link-trade reference.
Trading through a GameCube game
Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness can connect with Ruby and Sapphire using a Nintendo GameCube–Game Boy Advance cable. This is a separate process through the GameCube game’s Trade Center; it is not needed for a direct Ruby–Sapphire trade. See the trade reference.

Moving Pokémon to a later-generation game
Migrating a Pokémon from a GBA game to Pokémon Platinum is different from trading between Ruby and Sapphire. The Pokémon Platinum manual says migration requires the National Pokédex, and a migrated Pokémon cannot be sent back to the GBA game. See the Pokémon Platinum manual.
