If you want more demanding map and route puzzles after Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, the best pick depends on what you want to keep. DUSK stays closer to its fast, retro-FPS feel, while The Talos Principle makes spatial problem-solving the main event. Neither is established here as a direct, harder-puzzle version of Boltgun: they serve different tastes.

What kind of challenge does Boltgun offer?

Focus Entertainment presents Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun as a fusion of Warhammer 40,000 lore, classic FPS action, and nostalgic 1990s visuals. Combat is the campaign’s defining draw, but there is also a reason to look carefully at its spaces: Steam Community material includes guides to secrets and a walkthrough for the portal puzzle in Sanctum Magistratum. That points to exploration and at least one notable puzzle sequence, not a campaign dominated by difficult puzzles.

Navigation aids have also come up in the community: a question surfaced in the context of an Auroch Digital developer AMA asking, “Have you guys added an automap to the game?” That is evidence of interest in navigation support, not a representative measure of how players feel about the maps.

Which game should you try?

Game Combat emphasis Map and puzzle focus Best fit
DUSK Retro first-person shooter combat The available official listing does not establish extensive map puzzles or their difficulty. Players who want to keep the fast shooter energy and try a different setting.
The Talos Principle Puzzle-led rather than shooter-led First-person puzzles in a nonlinear world, with freedom to choose a path and solve puzzles your own way. Players willing to trade combat for deliberate spatial reasoning and route choice.

DUSK: stay in the retro-FPS lane

Steam describes DUSK as a retro FPS inspired by 1990s games, with combat against cultists and other hostile forces. It is the more natural choice if what you liked most about Boltgun was moving quickly through a shooter. However, the official store description does not establish that its maps contain extensive or especially challenging puzzles, so choose it for the shooter connection rather than as a guaranteed puzzle upgrade. Steam’s DUSK page gives its release date as December 10, 2018.

#1 Best Overall
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun (Nintendo Switch)
  • Dive into a visceral combat experience, complete with viciously satisfying gunplay, high mobility and buckets of blood to reward your skills
  • Dominate the battlefield with the awesome firepower and heavy metal of a Space Marine’s devastating arsenal
  • Experience the ultimate homage to retro shooters, blending stylish visuals with fluid, modern FPS gameplay

The Talos Principle: make puzzles the priority

Croteam describes The Talos Principle as a philosophical first-person puzzle game. Its nonlinear world lets players choose their path and solve puzzles in their own way, making it the stronger match if you want exploration and spatial reasoning to take precedence. It is a substantial shift from Boltgun: expect a puzzle-first experience, not a close substitute for its combat. See Croteam’s official game page.

How to choose based on what you want more of

  • Keep fast FPS combat: Start with DUSK, but do not assume it provides harder map puzzles.
  • Prioritize route choice and spatial puzzles: Choose The Talos Principle and accept that combat is no longer the focus.
  • Want a game that combines both in a verified, harder-puzzle package: The available descriptions do not establish such a recommendation. They do not provide a standardized comparison of map size, puzzle count, or difficulty, so a ranking would overstate what is known.

For the descriptions behind this comparison, see Focus Entertainment’s Boltgun page and the Boltgun Steam Community guides.
