Should You Buy a Commander Deck as Singles or Prebuilt?

A precon gets you a ready-to-play Commander deck with little setup; singles offer control over a specific build. Compare current delivered costs before deciding.

Buy a prebuilt Commander deck if you want a complete deck you can play with little setup. Buy singles if you have a specific commander or list in mind, want to choose every card, or already own part of the deck. Neither option is reliably cheaper in every case: compare the current sealed price with the delivered cost of the same 100-card list, accounting for condition and shipping.

What you get with a prebuilt Commander deck

A preconstructed Commander deck is a ready-to-play 100-card deck. Depending on the product, its box may also include tokens, a deck box, reference materials, or other extras. Those contents are release-specific, so check the listing for the exact deck rather than assuming every precon includes the same accessories.

For example, Wizards of the Coast says its Foundations Commander decks contain 100 cards—one traditional foil borderless face commander and 99 nonfoil cards—plus ten double-sided tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. They were released October 2, 2026. Wizards publishes the Foundations Commander decklists and names local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and other Magic retailers as places to find the products. The page establishes the product contents and retail channels, not current prices or stock.

Other releases show why checking the exact contents matters. The 2025 FINAL FANTASY decks include two foil commanders, 98 nonfoil cards, ten double-sided tokens, a Collector Booster Sample Pack, a reference card, and a deck box. Wizards’ 2022 Starter Commander Decks include ten double-sided tokens, a deck box, punchout counters, a strategy insert, a Commander rules summary, and a reference card. These are examples, not a standard package for every release.

How the two buying routes compare

What matters Prebuilt deck Singles
Readiness and effort Ready to play; no need to source the list card by card. You select and acquire the cards, then assemble the deck.
Card choice You start with the published decklist and can modify it. You choose the list and each card from the outset.
Fit with a particular commander or theme Good fit when an available precon matches what you want to play. Best fit when you have a specific commander or list that differs substantially from available precons.
Cost Compare the live sealed price for the product you want. Compare the delivered total for the exact same list, including shipping and applicable taxes.
Extras May include tokens, a deck box, or other product-specific materials. Usually a card-focused purchase; account for any accessories you still need.

When a precon is the better starting point

  • You want to play promptly without researching and ordering a full list.
  • You would like a complete example of how a Commander deck can be put together.
  • You are choosing a starting deck for a group and want everyone to begin with a ready-made option.
  • An available deck’s commander and theme already appeal to you.

Wizards describes the Foundations decks as ready-to-play and presents their monocolor strategies as straightforward examples, including artifacts, large creatures, and Dragons. That is a useful starting point for someone learning the format, but it is not a universal ranking of deck power. Check the official list to see whether the actual cards suit your preferences.

When buying singles makes more sense

  • You already know which commander you want to build around.
  • You have a specific decklist or want control over every card choice.
  • You own some of the cards already and do not want to buy them again in a sealed product.
  • You want a theme or combination of cards that available precons do not provide.

Singles give you more direct control over the final deck, but that control comes with the work of building and sourcing the list. Wizards publishes decklists for its products and points players to guidance on modifying a deck or building a new one; a precon list can therefore also serve as a starting point for a singles-based build.

  • THRILLING MULTIPLAYER BATTLES—Commander is a multiplayer way to play Magic, an epic, free-for-all battle full of strategic plays and social intrigue

How to compare the cost fairly

There is no universal price winner. A fair comparison is between one specific sealed deck and the exact same 100-card list bought as singles, in the same market and at current prices. Marketplace listings change, and a card-by-card total can be misleading if it leaves out delivery costs or assumes different card conditions.

  1. Choose the exact deck and market. Use the official list for the product, and compare prices available to buyers in your region.
  2. Record the sealed product’s current total. Note the seller, date, condition, shipping, and any applicable taxes.
  3. Price the complete list as singles. Match the cards, language, edition, and condition as closely as possible; include shipping and applicable taxes.
  4. Account for product contents. Decide whether the sealed deck’s tokens, box, or other included materials have value to you, and whether a singles build would require separate accessories.
  5. Compare like with like. If the list contains cards you already own, subtract those only when comparing against what you would actually need to buy. Do not treat a single seller’s listing or one deck’s result as proof that precons or singles are always cheaper.

Wizards lists TCGplayer among the retailers for Foundations Commander, but a reliable matched-list comparison still depends on live listings and your chosen conditions and delivery assumptions. The official product page does not establish today’s price or inventory.

A practical middle option: start with a precon, then change it

If you like a precon’s commander or theme but want a more personal list, use its official decklist to decide what to keep and what to replace. This avoids having to design every part of the deck before you can start, while leaving room to customize. Whether this route costs less than buying the full list as singles depends on current prices and the cards you choose to change; compare the actual totals rather than assuming upgrades are automatically a bargain.

Which should you choose?

For a newer player who wants to join a game soon, a precon is the simpler choice: it is a complete deck, and the published list lets you inspect its contents before buying. Choose singles if you already have a specific build in mind, own part of the list, or would be disappointed by the available precon choices. If price is the deciding factor, make a current, delivered-cost comparison for one exact deck rather than relying on a general rule.
