Games Workshop vs. Hasbro: Which Is the Better Investment in 2026?

Games Workshop is the better current operating business; Hasbro is the broader but riskier recovery investment. Games Workshop’s 52 weeks ended 31 May 2026 produced record revenue, operating profit and profit before tax, with the Warhammer core business supplying most of the result. Hasbro has valuable assets in Magic: The Gathering, Wizards of the Coast and digital gaming, but its 2025 consolidated profit was almost wiped out by a large Consumer Products goodwill impairment and tariff costs. The right purchase therefore depends on valuation: Games Workshop is the cleaner quality compounder if its share price does not already price in that quality, while Hasbro requires confidence that its weaker consumer-products portfolio can recover.

This is a business-quality comparison, not a live buy or sell recommendation. Current share prices, market capitalizations, net debt and trading multiples must be checked on the same date before committing capital.

The short answer: quality versus recovery

Games Workshop currently has the stronger evidence of profitable, focused execution. For the 52 weeks ended 31 May 2026, it reported £659.7 million of group revenue, £275.0 million of operating profit, £275.7 million of profit before tax and earnings per share of 624.0 pence. The core Warhammer operation generated £626.8 million of that revenue. Dividends declared and paid for the period totaled 485 pence per share.

Hasbro’s 2025 numbers tell a more divided story. The group produced $4,701.3 million of revenue, but reported operating profit was only $11 million after a $1,021.9 million non-cash goodwill impairment in Consumer Products. Consumer Products recorded $2,437.6 million of revenue and a $942.6 million operating loss. Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming, by contrast, generated $2,186.9 million of revenue and $1,006.8 million of operating profit. Hasbro also produced $893 million of operating cash flow, reported $1.14 billion of adjusted operating profit, paid $393 million in dividends and authorized up to $1 billion of share repurchases.

#1 Best Overall
Games Workshop - Warhammer 40,000: Introductory Set
  • Games Workshop - Warhammer 40,000: Introductory Set (10 Edition - 2023)
  • A great way to begin your journey into the Warhammer 40,000 hobby
  • Includes basic rules for the game, plus dice, a gaming mat, reference sheets, and a range ruler
  • 16 push-fit models make up two balanced starter forces - Space Marines and Tyranids, plus hobby supplies to build and paint them

That split creates two different investment cases:

  • Games Workshop: a concentrated Warhammer ecosystem with exceptional current margins, strong cash generation and a visible hobby-led engine, but meaningful dependence on one intellectual property and release cadence.
  • Hasbro: a diversified portfolio with a highly profitable Wizards franchise and digital upside, offset by struggling Consumer Products, impairment risk, tariffs and the execution risk of a turnaround.

Without a same-date valuation comparison, calling either stock an outright bargain would be unjustified. Operationally, Games Workshop leads; on potential recovery upside and diversification, Hasbro offers the more contrarian case.

What each company actually owns

Games Workshop is a single, integrated hobby ecosystem

Games Workshop’s core business spans Warhammer miniatures, paints, books, retail stores and related licensing. These products reinforce one another: a new miniature range can drive paint and accessory purchases, books deepen the setting, stores provide places to learn and play, and licensed media can introduce the universe to new audiences. The model is concentrated, but it is not dependent on one product launch alone.

The 2026 result shows how dominant that ecosystem is. Core revenue of £626.8 million represented roughly 95% of the £659.7 million group total. Licensing contributed £32.9 million, down from £52.5 million in 2025. That decline matters because it demonstrates that licensing can be volatile even while the underlying miniature and hobby business grows.

Chief executive Kevin Rountree said, “Games Workshop and the Warhammer hobby are in great shape,” and that the company delivered group revenue and profit before tax at record levels because of another good performance from the core business. The statement is consistent with the reported figures, but investors still need to test whether future growth comes from repeatable customer engagement, higher prices, new releases, geographic expansion or an unusually strong period of demand.

Hasbro combines Wizards, toys, games and licensing

Hasbro’s portfolio is structurally broader. Its Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment includes Magic: The Gathering and digital or licensed gaming activities, while Consumer Products covers the traditional toy and game portfolio. Hasbro also has entertainment and licensing relationships that can monetize its intellectual property beyond physical products.

In 2025, Wizards and Digital Gaming supplied about 46.5% of consolidated revenue and, on its own, produced operating profit close to the entire group’s revenue-adjusted earnings power. Consumer Products supplied about 51.8% of revenue but lost money at the operating level. This is why the consolidated $11 million operating-profit figure is a poor description of the underlying portfolio: it combines a very profitable growth engine with a severely impaired business.

Chief executive Chris Cocks said Hasbro had returned the company to growth, engaged one billion fans, secured new partnerships and advanced its evolution into a digital-first play and intellectual-property company. The strategy gives Hasbro more avenues for growth than Games Workshop, but it also makes results harder to interpret because progress in one segment can be offset by deterioration in another.

Operating quality and margins

Measure Games Workshop (52 weeks ended 31 May 2026) Hasbro (fiscal 2025)
Revenue £659.7 million $4,701.3 million
Core or key segment revenue Warhammer core: £626.8 million Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming: $2,186.9 million
Operating profit £275.0 million $11 million reported group operating profit
Profit before tax £275.7 million Not stated in the supplied fiscal comparison
Operating margin About 41.7%, calculated from reported revenue and operating profit About 0.2% on reported group figures; heavily affected by impairment
Earnings per share 624.0 pence Not stated in the supplied fiscal comparison
Dividend or buyback information 485 pence per share declared and paid $393 million of dividends paid; up to $1 billion repurchase authorization

Games Workshop’s approximately 41.7% operating margin is not a promise for every year, but it shows the economics of a focused, high-value hobby franchise. The company converts a large share of sales into operating profit while continuing to invest in manufacturing, products and the community around the games.

Hasbro’s roughly 0.2% reported group margin should not be used as a normalized estimate because the $1,021.9 million goodwill impairment is non-cash and concentrated in Consumer Products. A better diagnostic is the segment split: Wizards and Digital Gaming generated approximately a 46.0% operating margin, calculated from $1,006.8 million of operating profit and $2,186.9 million of revenue. Consumer Products generated an operating margin of approximately negative 38.7% after the impairment, calculated from its $942.6 million loss and $2,437.6 million of revenue.

The comparison therefore depends on what you believe will persist. Games Workshop’s current profitability is broadly supported by its core business. Hasbro’s normalized potential depends on Wizards remaining strong while Consumer Products stops destroying group earnings.

Growth engines: Warhammer releases versus Magic and digital gaming

How Games Workshop grows

Games Workshop can grow through several linked levers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • New miniature releases and refreshed armies that encourage existing players to buy again.
  • Higher participation in the Warhammer hobby, including painting, collecting and organized play.
  • Expansion of stores, manufacturing capacity and distribution.
  • Sales of paints, books and accessories alongside miniatures.
  • Licensing of the Warhammer setting to games, entertainment and other partners.

The 2026 figures indicate that the first four levers remain more important than licensing. Core revenue rose to £626.8 million, while licensing revenue fell to £32.9 million from £52.5 million in 2025. Investors should not assume that a successful film, game or other license is necessary for the investment case; nor should they treat licensing as a stable annuity.

How Hasbro grows

Hasbro’s strongest reported growth came from Magic: The Gathering, Wizards and digital or licensed gaming. Hasbro’s 2025 results release said Magic revenue rose 59%. Tabletop gaming revenue was $1,686.6 million, and Magic is described as a collectible trading-card game. Digital distribution and licensing can expand reach without the same physical manufacturing requirements as traditional toys, although they introduce dependence on platform partners, release schedules and player retention.

Hasbro’s 2026 outlook called for 3% to 5% constant-currency revenue growth and a 24% to 25% adjusted operating margin. That is guidance, not a guarantee, and the constant-currency qualification means reported dollar results can differ when exchange rates move.

Games Workshop offers a simpler growth narrative: deepen one hobby and monetize it across products and channels. Hasbro offers a potentially larger set of growth options, but each option carries its own execution test. The key question for Hasbro shareholders is whether Wizards’ momentum can fund and eventually outweigh the Consumer Products recovery effort.

Diversification and concentration risk

The case for Games Workshop’s concentration

Concentration is not automatically a weakness when the franchise is distinctive and customers buy repeatedly. Warhammer’s integrated miniatures, rules, fiction and community can create durable engagement. A focused company can also allocate capital and product attention without balancing unrelated categories.

Rank #2
Kill Team: Starter Set: Warhammer 40,000
  • starter set
  • Miniatures
  • Kill Team

The risk is that a single hobby ecosystem leaves fewer places to hide if customer retention weakens, a major release underperforms, manufacturing capacity falls short or the company misjudges pricing. Foreign-exchange movements can also affect reported results because Games Workshop sells internationally. Monitor the number and quality of releases, production lead times, customer recruitment and retention, and evidence that the hobby remains active rather than merely benefiting from a one-year surge.

The case for Hasbro’s diversification

Hasbro’s exposure to Wizards, traditional toys, games, digital gaming and licensing reduces reliance on one product category. A weak toy cycle does not automatically imply a weak Magic year, and a successful digital partnership can add revenue without requiring every physical line to recover simultaneously.

Diversification can also dilute returns. Consumer Products represented $2,437.6 million of 2025 revenue but produced a $942.6 million operating loss after impairment. Investors are paying for the entire portfolio, not just Wizards. The relevant question is whether management can improve the underperforming assets, shrink them, or redeploy capital without damaging the profitable franchise.

Dividends, buybacks and cash returns

Games Workshop’s per-share distribution

Games Workshop reported 485 pence per share of dividends declared and paid for the 2026 period. Against reported EPS of 624.0 pence, that is approximately 77.7% of earnings, calculated from the supplied figures. The ratio describes that period only; it is not a promise that future dividends will match 485 pence or that every year will have the same payout.

A high distribution can suit investors seeking income, but it also means less cash is retained for manufacturing expansion, new stores, technology or acquisitions. Assess the sustainability of the payment against future earnings and cash generation rather than extrapolating one year’s figure.

Hasbro’s dividend and repurchase capacity

Hasbro returned $393 million through dividends in 2025 and authorized a share-repurchase program of up to $1 billion. An authorization is permission to buy shares, not evidence that the full amount has already been spent. Buybacks create value only when the company has surplus cash and repurchases shares at prices below their long-term worth; otherwise they can amplify capital-allocation mistakes.

Hasbro reported $893 million of 2025 operating cash flow and $1.14 billion of adjusted operating profit. Those figures support the argument that the business generates substantial cash despite the reported impairment, but cash must also cover debt service, investment, restructuring and working-capital needs. The dividend and buyback case is therefore tied to the recovery plan, not independent of it.

Exceptional items, tariffs and balance-sheet risk

The most important accounting distortion in Hasbro’s 2025 result was the $1,021.9 million non-cash goodwill impairment in Consumer Products. Goodwill impairments do not directly consume cash in the period recorded, but they signal that management’s expected value of acquired businesses has fallen. They also make reported operating profit look dramatically worse and may indicate that future returns from those assets will be lower than previously assumed.

Consumer Products also incurred approximately $44.9 million of tariff costs. Tariffs can be passed to consumers, absorbed through lower margins, or mitigated by changing sourcing and production; each response has consequences for demand and profitability. Investors should track whether tariff exposure rises or falls and whether the company’s guidance includes those costs.

Games Workshop’s highlighted 2026 results show strong cash generation and no comparable impairment charge. That does not eliminate risk: manufacturing investment, inventory, currency movements and licensing volatility still matter. It does mean the current comparison contains a much smaller exceptional-item overhang on the Games Workshop side.

Valuation: the missing piece before buying either stock

Business quality does not determine investment returns without price. The supplied figures do not include current share prices, market capitalizations, net debt, free cash flow, price-to-earnings ratios or enterprise-value-to-EBIT multiples, so a responsible conclusion cannot name the cheaper stock today.

Build a same-date comparison using the following checklist:

  1. Record the current share price and shares outstanding in each company’s listing currency.
  2. Calculate market capitalization and enterprise value, including debt and cash on a consistent basis.
  3. Use the latest reported earnings and free cash flow, clearly labeling trailing, annualized or adjusted figures.
  4. Compare price-to-earnings and enterprise-value-to-operating-profit multiples, but show both reported and normalized Hasbro earnings because the impairment distorts 2025.
  5. Calculate dividend yield from the current price and the latest declared distribution; do not treat a one-time or authorization figure as recurring income.
  6. Stress-test the valuation if Games Workshop’s margin falls from its 2026 level or if Hasbro’s Consumer Products segment takes longer to recover.

Games Workshop may be the better company and still be a poor purchase if investors pay an excessive premium for uninterrupted growth. Hasbro may look statistically cheap and still be a value trap if Wizards slows, Consumer Products remains loss-making or debt limits capital returns. The valuation hurdle must reflect those different failure modes.

Risks to monitor after investing

Games Workshop watch list

  • Release cadence: Are new armies, miniatures and rulebooks arriving consistently, and do they generate repeat purchases?
  • Customer retention: Is the company adding and retaining hobbyists rather than relying on price increases?
  • Manufacturing capacity: Can factories and distribution keep up with demand without creating prolonged stock shortages?
  • Foreign exchange: Do currency movements reduce translated revenue or profit?
  • Licensing: Can licensing recover from £32.9 million in 2026 after £52.5 million in 2025, and is the core business still growing without it?

Hasbro watch list

  • Magic demand and mix: Does the 59% Magic revenue increase continue, and are new sets attracting sustained play and collecting?
  • Wizards’ digital licensing: Are partnerships expanding profitably, or creating dependence on a small number of platforms?
  • Consumer Products volume: Is revenue recovering through units and demand, rather than only price or timing?
  • Tariffs: Are the approximately $44.9 million of 2025 costs receding, being passed through, or eroding margins?
  • Debt and capital allocation: Can dividends and the authorized buyback coexist with debt reduction and investment?
  • Impairments: Does another write-down indicate that the turnaround assumptions were too optimistic?
  • Guidance delivery: Does the company achieve its 3%–5% constant-currency revenue-growth and 24%–25% adjusted operating-margin outlook?

Which investor is each stock suited to?

Games Workshop may suit you if

  • You prioritize current operating quality and a focused franchise over diversification.
  • You can tolerate concentration in one hobby ecosystem and the volatility of licensing revenue.
  • You are willing to wait for a reasonable entry price rather than buy solely because the business is excellent.
  • You value a substantial per-share distribution but understand that 485 pence is a reported 2026 payment, not a guaranteed future amount.

Hasbro may suit you if

  • You want exposure to Wizards, Magic, digital gaming, toys and licensing in one company.
  • You accept turnaround risk in exchange for potential upside if Consumer Products recovers.
  • You can analyze adjusted versus reported earnings and follow impairment, tariff and debt developments.
  • You view the dividend and repurchase authorization as components of a broader capital-allocation plan, not as a substitute for operating improvement.

A practical decision framework

  1. Set the allocation objective. Decide whether the goal is compounding, income, recovery upside or portfolio diversification. The answer changes which risks are acceptable.
  2. Normalize the earnings. Treat Games Workshop’s 2026 result as a recent operating reference, but test lower margins. For Hasbro, separate Wizards’ economics from Consumer Products and remove the non-cash impairment when estimating normalized earnings without ignoring what the write-down says about asset quality.
  3. Check valuation on one date. Do not compare a live price for one company with an old multiple for the other. Use the same currency conventions and define whether debt, leases and cash are included.
  4. Write the bear case. For Games Workshop, describe a weaker hobby cycle, manufacturing bottlenecks and licensing decline. For Hasbro, describe slower Magic growth, another Consumer Products impairment, tariffs and constrained capital returns.
  5. Choose a margin of safety. A concentrated quality company can deserve a premium, but not an unlimited one. A turnaround should normally require a discount that compensates for execution uncertainty.
  6. Recheck the thesis quarterly or at each results release. Focus on revenue quality, segment margins, cash flow, customer indicators and capital allocation rather than headline guidance alone.

Final verdict

On the evidence available for the latest reported periods, Games Workshop is the better business. Its Warhammer core generated £626.8 million of £659.7 million group revenue and supported £275.0 million of operating profit, while Hasbro’s consolidated operating profit fell to $11 million after a $1,021.9 million Consumer Products goodwill impairment. Games Workshop therefore offers the cleaner quality-compounder profile.

Hasbro is not simply a weak toy company. Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming generated $1,006.8 million of operating profit on $2,186.9 million of revenue, Magic revenue rose 59%, and the group produced $893 million of operating cash flow in 2025. Those strengths make Hasbro a credible recovery and diversification candidate, but the investment depends on Consumer Products stabilization, disciplined capital allocation and continued Wizards momentum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The actionable conclusion is conditional: prefer Games Workshop when its valuation is reasonable for the concentration and growth risks; consider Hasbro only when its market price adequately compensates you for turnaround uncertainty. Until current multiples, balance-sheet data and free-cash-flow yields are compared on the same date, “better company” is supportable, but “better stock” is not yet proven.
