What it is
Wargame Construction Set is a strategy and simulation game for designing and playing custom battles. You can draw maps, position roads, rivers, bridges, woods, buildings, and mines, then configure soldiers and vehicles with attributes such as unit type, weapons, firepower, movement, and strength. Battles can range from individual engagements to large campaigns, and settings can draw on historical, modern, fantasy, or science-fiction conflicts. Players who would rather start with existing scenarios have eight included games: five for solo play and three for two players. Those scenarios can also be modified. The game is listed across Windows, Commodore 64, DOS, Atari 8-bit family, and Atari ST; its Steam listing specifies Windows. Steam features include single-player, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. Its central appeal is the ability to shape both the battlefield and the forces that fight on it.
What players like, and what they don't
- Create maps with varied terrain and structures
- Customize unit attributes
- Four scales of combat
- Eight included games, including three for two players
- Steam listing specifies Windows only
- Scenario design requires creating or modifying battles
Who it suits
It suits players who want to create their own wargame maps, units, and scenarios, as well as those content to modify included battles. The range of settings supports historical, modern, fantasy, and science-fiction designs.
Wargame Construction Set puts scenario design at the center, with tools for shaping maps, forces, and combat scale. Its ready-to-play scenarios offer an alternative for players who do not want to build every battle themselves.
