GamesBeat announced on April 22, 2025, that it was spinning out from VentureBeat as an independent media brand. Gina Joseph became CEO and GamesBeat founder Dean Takahashi became Editorial Director. The companies said GamesBeat would continue covering the business of gaming, while VentureBeat focused more closely on enterprise AI, data infrastructure and security. The deal price was not disclosed.
What happened, and when did GamesBeat become independent?
The announcement came on April 22, 2025. VentureBeat described the move as a spinout into a standalone company; GamesBeat later said the separation took place in late April, after 17 years under VentureBeat. The announcement date and the later description of the completion timing are distinct: April 22 was when the move was announced, while “late April” is how GamesBeat characterized the spinout in its December 2025 retrospective.
“Independent” here refers to the spinout and new company. The publicly reported information does not establish detailed transaction terms or ownership percentages. VentureBeat said the deal price was undisclosed.
Who leads GamesBeat, and who owns it?
Leadership
Gina Joseph, formerly VentureBeat’s chief strategy officer, was named GamesBeat CEO. Dean Takahashi, the publication’s founder and longtime journalist, was named Editorial Director. GamesBeat’s December 2025 retrospective also credited Joseph with guiding the legal process, with strategic adviser Peter Levin and lawyers at Stubbs Alderton assisting. That account identifies Levin as an adviser, not as an owner.

Reported ownership—and what remains unknown
Game Developer reported that Joseph, Takahashi and a group of investors would own the new GamesBeat, citing a publication spokesperson who said the investors would be announced later. The reporting available here does not establish the identities of the complete investor group, whether a later disclosure occurred, anyone’s ownership percentage or the transaction’s financial terms. Those details should not be inferred from the leadership appointments.
How did the companies describe the split?
The companies presented the separation as a way to pursue different editorial and business directions. VentureBeat said it would concentrate on enterprise AI, data infrastructure and security. GamesBeat said it would continue reporting on the business of gaming and expand coverage at the intersection of gaming, interactive technology and entertainment.
GamesBeat’s original announcement also outlined editorial initiatives, events, partnerships and business connections as areas for development. These were plans stated by the company, not guaranteed outcomes. Joseph described the publication’s ambitions in the announcement, while Takahashi characterized GamesBeat’s role as covering the day-to-day business of games and connecting people in the industry.
What changed in GamesBeat’s first year outside VentureBeat?
In a December 24, 2025, retrospective, GamesBeat said it had launched GB MAX, The BIG Show podcast and new event series during its first year as an independent company, while expanding its editorial focus and team. At its first independent GamesBeat Summit, Takahashi said the GamesBeat story archive would remain with the new GamesBeat and described a small team working across partnerships, events, operations, marketing and editorial coverage.

| Organization | Stated coverage or direction | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| GamesBeat | Games business, entertainment, technology, game culture, development and gameplay; its initial announcement emphasized gaming, interactive technology and entertainment. | GamesBeat’s announcement and current About page describe its editorial scope. |
| VentureBeat | Enterprise AI, data infrastructure and security. | VentureBeat’s statement about its strategic focus. |
This is a comparison of the organizations’ stated editorial direction, not their relative size, value or profitability. GamesBeat’s About page also promotes GB MAX membership and newsletters. Its descriptions of a “$200B+” interactive economy and a “$177 billion” industry are promotional claims, not independently verified market statistics. Likewise, Joseph’s reference to a “$177 billion industry” in the April 2025 announcement should be understood as her company-announcement characterization, not an independently established market-size figure.
