At GamesBeat Summit 2024, Discord’s Peter Sellis and Coda’s Rick Phillips argued that game publishers should treat direct-to-consumer (D2C) monetization as part of the player relationship—not as a revenue layer detached from the game. Their practical advice: make the core experience worth returning to, offer paid value that fits it, and keep testing a web store after launch.
What D2C means for game publishers
Direct-to-consumer strategies let publishers build commercial channels and relationships with players directly, including web stores and alternative payment methods. At the panel, moderated by GamesBeat lead writer Dean Takahashi, the speakers discussed D2C alongside other ways to earn revenue and add value to a game community.
Sellis, Discord’s senior vice president of product, described a progression from making Discord’s free chat and server product useful to offering additional paid value through Nitro. He also discussed sponsored Quests, which reward players with in-game items, and cosmetics sold through the Discord Shop. The event report says developers supply content and share revenue with Discord. These examples show different mechanisms, not evidence that one approach will work for every publisher.
Monetization should follow a game players want to keep playing
Phillips, Coda’s chief operating officer, brought a development perspective after 12 years working in game development. He advised publishers to prioritize a balanced game and player retention before deciding how to monetize it.

His distinction was between monetization viewed in isolation and monetization as part of a longer-term relationship with players. As GamesBeat attributed to him: “When we think about monetization — yes, in some cases, it can be a dirty word in isolation,” but when it enriches the player experience and supports a lasting publisher-player relationship, “then it’s really not.” The relevant test is whether an offer contributes value to the experience, rather than simply putting a payment opportunity in front of the player.

How the panel’s monetization approaches differ
| Approach | Revenue mechanism | Player-facing value described at the panel |
|---|---|---|
| Discord Nitro | Subscription | Paid features added to a useful free chat and server product; the report does not specify the features. |
| Sponsored Quests | Sponsored activity | Players earn in-game items as rewards. |
| Discord Shop cosmetics | Cosmetic purchases | Cosmetics supplied by developers; the report says developers share revenue with Discord. |
| Publisher web store | Direct purchases through a publisher’s store, potentially with alternative payment methods | A direct sales channel; the panel report does not specify a universal player benefit or performance outcome. |
Sellis also described the value of maintaining a broad portfolio of monetization options rather than relying on one path. He warned that a narrow set of choices can push publishers toward linear optimization decisions that may be suboptimal for consumers. A portfolio is not a guarantee of better results: the panel offered a strategic rationale, not comparative performance data.
Why a web store needs iteration after launch
Phillips cautioned against expecting a D2C web store to succeed immediately. “You can’t launch a direct-to-consumer web store and expect to be incredibly successful out of the gate,” he said, according to GamesBeat.

- THIS IS AN EXPANSION TO STAR WARS OUTER RIM: This is not a standalone experience. You will need a copy of the Star Wars Outer Rim base game in order to play with this expansion.
- TAKE TO THE STARS AND BECOME A LIVING LEGEND: You’ve made a name for yourself in the Outer Rim, but there is still Unfinished Business. Hyperlanes through the Core Worlds hold the promise of untapped opportunities. The market is flush with new merchandise, from valuable cargo to tools of the trade. Just watch your step; the latest crop of bounties is even deadlier, and your rivals are looking to take you down!
- STRATEGY GAME: The goal of Outer Rim is to be the first player to reach ten fame, but the path to notoriety can be different for every scoundrel. Cross paths with the various factions patrolling the Outer Rim, bring in iconic Star Wars characters dead or alive for bounties, or make a fortune delivering illegal cargo, dodging patrols and encounters across the galaxy.
- UNFINISHED BUSINESS: This long-awaited expansion is packed with more of everything the game has to offer - characters, ships, gear, bounties, jobs, encounters, dice and more! Two new tiles allow players to cross the galaxy by passing through the Core Worlds, and the new “favors” and “ambitions” change up how the game is played. Fire up your engines—it’s time to get down to business.
- NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: Star Wars Outer Rim is a strategy board game for 1 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 14 and older. Average playtime is approximately 3 to 4 hours.
His recommended approach was experimental: form hypotheses, observe player behavior, and make repeated changes. Consumer behavior and trends change, so a store’s launch is the start of an improvement process, not proof that its initial design is right. In practice, that means evaluating how players use the store and revising the experience based on what those observations show. The panel did not identify a particular store design, conversion rate, or tactic as universally effective.

What the panel establishes—and what it does not
The discussion offers strategic guidance rather than a measured comparison of D2C outcomes. GamesBeat’s event report includes no comparative performance data, costs, conversion rates, or independent evaluation showing that subscriptions, sponsored rewards, cosmetics, or web stores improve revenue or retention.
The report describes Coda as helping developers and publishers create and manage monetization sources, including alternative payment methods and web stores. That is a description of Coda’s work in the event coverage, not independent evidence of business results.
