GamesBeat Summit 2024’s “Hollywood and Games: A Long Awaited Love Affair” panel brought together representatives from games, animation, talent representation and investment to discuss the opportunities and challenges of adapting video-game properties for film and television. It took place in Los Angeles on May 21, 2024.
When and where was the panel?
The session was scheduled for May 21, 2024, from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. at GamesBeat Summit 2024. The conference agenda listed the Marina del Rey Marriott in Los Angeles as the venue.
Who spoke on “Hollywood and Games”?
- Derek Douglas of CAA
- Maureen Fan of Baobab Studios
- Josh Yguado of Jam City
Peter Levin of Griffin Gaming Partners moderated. These are the affiliations and roles given in GamesBeat’s event coverage.
What did the discussion cover?
GamesBeat’s June 6, 2024 post-event recap says the panel addressed Hollywood’s changing relationship with games, along with the opportunities and challenges of adapting games for traditional film and television. The speakers represented different parts of that landscape: game-company leadership, an animation studio, talent representation and investment. Those roles offer distinct perspectives on creative adaptation and on business questions such as financing, distribution and intellectual property; they should not be mistaken for a single position attributed to the whole panel.

In the recap, Yguado argued that games had long accumulated worlds and characters with devoted audiences, and that the industry should have recognized their potential as film and television material sooner: “I’m a huge believer of gaming being at the very center of what entertainment is … I’m actually shocked that there haven’t been more adaptations sooner. For the last 40 years, we’ve been accumulating this treasure trove of worlds and characters that are beloved, that people are spending literally thousands of hours with. The fact that we’re realizing now that this is a great source of television and film IP is something we should have realized a long time ago.”
Which adaptations did GamesBeat cite?
In its May 15, 2024 preview, GamesBeat named The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Arcane, Sonic, Fallout, Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Last of Us as examples of the growing adaptation trend. The list illustrated GamesBeat’s framing; it was not presented as exhaustive or as an endorsement of any title.
The preview also reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had earned more than $1.36 billion at the box office. That is the historical figure the 2024 article cited, not a current box-office total. It further said, with the wording “I’m told,” that more than 40 game adaptations into movies were in development. GamesBeat provided no underlying source or method for that count, so it is best read as a claim reported by the preview, not as an independently verified industry total.

GamesBeat’s event preview and post-event recap establish that the panel was announced and took place, but they do not establish that a recording is currently available.
