GameSir GK100 vs Mechanical Gaming Keyboards: Key Differences Explained

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: the GameSir GK100 is a one-handed mechanical gaming keypad, not a conventional full-size keyboard. It puts a cluster of programmable gaming controls under one hand, while a normal mechanical gaming keyboard provides a complete typing layout. A current Hall-effect keyboard is a different category again: it can expose adjustable actuation, multi-point triggering and often Rapid Trigger, capabilities that are not documented for the GK100.

The right choice depends on what you need the device to do. Choose the GK100 for dedicated left-hand game controls beside a mouse; choose a conventional mechanical keyboard when one keyboard must handle writing, chat and games; choose Hall-effect hardware when adjustable key travel or Rapid Trigger is a priority and the individual model supports it.

What the GameSir GK100 actually is

GameSir’s keyboard product identified in the available documentation is the GameSir GK100. Its user manual calls it “the authentic one-handed mechanical gaming keypad for Windows PC and GameSir X1.” That wording is important: the GK100 is designed as a compact gaming control surface, not as a universal replacement for every key on a normal desktop keyboard.

A one-handed keypad, not a normal keyboard

A one-handed keypad concentrates the keys most often used for movement, abilities, inventory, communication and other game actions in a single hand. The other hand stays on the mouse. This arrangement can reduce the distance between a movement key and the mouse and can make a desk feel less crowded than a full-size board.

The trade-off is coverage. The GK100 is not intended to provide the same comfortable, complete typing experience as a full-size, tenkeyless or compact mechanical keyboard. You can use its configurable controls for games, but writing long documents, entering passwords, navigating spreadsheets or using uncommon punctuation may require a second keyboard or frequent remapping.

Documented GK100 hardware

The manual describes a wired USB device with two default modes, configurable functions and a sliding-rail style palm rest. A specification reproduction associated with the older model lists 104 keys, approximately 4.0 mm of key travel and a 60±10 g key force. Those figures are model documentation, not a current industry standard and not a guarantee that every listing uses identical hardware.

The GK100 is documented as mechanical. The cited manual does not describe analog key-travel sensing, adjustable actuation points or Rapid Trigger. Those omissions matter when comparing it with newer Hall-effect products, whose selling point is the ability to detect how far a key has moved rather than merely whether a switch has crossed one fixed contact point.

Layout and everyday use: the largest practical difference

GK100 layout

The GK100’s one-handed layout is built around gaming reach. Its controls sit on the left side of the desk, leaving the mouse hand free. The palm rest can slide on its rail so you can position your wrist closer to the keys or farther away, depending on desk depth and hand size. The two default modes and remapping functions let you adapt the same physical keys to different games or control schemes.

This arrangement is particularly useful when a game uses a concentrated group of keys and you want your mouse hand to remain in position. It can also help players who prefer a low-width setup or who already own a separate keyboard for typing.

Full-size, TKL and compact mechanical keyboards

A conventional mechanical gaming keyboard normally presents a complete layout. Full-size boards include the alphanumeric section, function row, navigation cluster and number pad. Tenkeyless boards remove the number pad to save width, while compact layouts remove or layer additional keys. All of these are still designed to function as the primary keyboard for general computer use.

Complete layouts are more flexible for mixed workloads. You can switch from a game to a document, chat window or configuration utility without reaching for another device. The price of that flexibility is a larger footprint and, on a full-size board, a number pad that may push the mouse farther to the right.

Typing implications

If you regularly write, code, moderate communities or use keyboard shortcuts outside games, a standard mechanical keyboard is the safer single-device choice. The GK100 can be programmed for game commands, but its one-handed design does not replace the muscle memory and key coverage of a normal typing layout.

A practical two-device setup is possible: keep a conventional keyboard for text entry and place the GK100 to its left for games. That gives you the keypad’s dedicated controls without asking it to perform a job it was not designed to perform. It also means buying, powering and finding desk space for two wired peripherals.

Mechanical switches versus Hall-effect sensing

What “mechanical” means for the GK100

In a conventional mechanical switch, a physical mechanism moves under the keycap and registers a key press at a defined point. The GK100 is identified as mechanical in its manual, and its older specification reproduction gives approximately 4.0 mm of total travel with a 60±10 g key force. Travel is the distance the key can move; force is the approximate pressure needed to operate it. Neither number tells you that the keypad offers adjustable actuation.

Mechanical keyboards can differ greatly in switch feel, sound, spring weight and actuation point. “Mechanical” describes the broad switch construction, not one universal response profile. A mechanical board may be optimized for a light, fast press, a heavier tactile feel or quiet operation, depending on its switch and keycap design.

What Hall-effect keyboards add

Hall-effect keyboards use magnetic sensing to measure a key’s position through its travel. On models whose firmware and software expose that signal, you may be able to choose where a key activates, assign more than one action along its travel or configure a key to reset as soon as it begins moving upward.

Common advertised features include:

  • Adjustable actuation: select a shallow or deeper activation point rather than accepting one fixed point.
  • Multi-point or dual-action input: assign one action near the top of the press and another deeper in the stroke.
  • Rapid Trigger: allow a key to release and reactivate based on movement instead of waiting for a fixed reset position.
  • Analog-style input: on supported games and software, use the amount of travel as a variable rather than a simple on/off signal.

These capabilities are model- and software-dependent. Hall-effect sensing alone does not guarantee that every feature is available, that every game accepts analog input, or that the keyboard feels better for ordinary typing.

Which responds faster?

There is no honest universal answer that “mechanical” or “Hall-effect” is always faster. A conventional mechanical keyboard can already feel immediate, and total response also depends on firmware scanning, USB communication, debounce settings, the game engine and the computer. Hall-effect hardware has a technical advantage when you want adjustable activation or Rapid Trigger because the sensor can track movement continuously, but that advantage only matters when the specific keyboard and its software expose the feature and you configure it for the game.

The GK100 manual does not document adjustable actuation or Rapid Trigger. Treat it as a traditional mechanical keypad with programmable functions, not as an analog or magnetic-sensing controller.

Customization and software

What G-Core provides

GameSir’s G-Core software is documented as the control point for key configuration, macros and lighting effects. You can use it to remap supported keys, create game-specific command arrangements and change the keypad’s lighting behavior. The GK100 also has two default modes, allowing you to switch between stored control arrangements without rebuilding every assignment from scratch.

Macros can be useful for repetitive, non-competitive actions or accessibility-oriented layouts, but their usefulness depends on the game’s rules. Some games restrict automation or treat certain macro behavior as unacceptable. Check the individual game’s terms before using a macro in a match.

How this compares with modern keyboard software

Conventional mechanical keyboards range from simple plug-and-play boards to heavily programmable models. Depending on the product, software may offer per-key remapping, layers, profile switching, macros, lighting scenes, dual-action keys and adjustable actuation. None of these features is universal to all mechanical keyboards, so compare the software specification rather than assuming that a mechanical switch automatically means enthusiast-level programmability.

Hall-effect models often combine the same profile and lighting tools with actuation controls. A board may let you set a different actuation point for each key, create a shallow trigger for movement keys and a deeper trigger for accidental-prone commands, or assign two actions to different points in one key’s travel. Verify that the software supports your operating system and that profiles can be stored on the keyboard if you need them on more than one computer.

Connectivity, compatibility and product age

Wired USB connection

The GK100 documentation describes a wired USB connection. A wired link avoids charging and wireless-pairing issues, but it adds another cable to the desk and gives you no freedom to move the keypad away from the computer. Confirm the connector shown in the listing and whether the cable is permanently attached or detachable before buying an older unit.

Windows PC and GameSir X1 target

The manual names Windows PC and GameSir X1 as target platforms. That is not the same as a promise of support for every current Windows release, game console or mobile device. Before purchase, confirm that the seller provides the required G-Core software, that the software runs on your operating-system version and that the game or launcher accepts the keypad as a standard USB input.

Why age matters

The GK100 is an older product. Listings may represent old stock, used hardware or refurbished units, and the same product name can appear with incomplete accessories. Current price, inventory, warranty coverage, firmware support and physical condition are not established by the cited documentation. Treat each listing as a separate purchase decision.

How to set up the GK100 for gaming

  1. Check the package and connection. Confirm that the keypad, USB cable or connector, palm-rest parts and any required documentation are present. Connect it directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub while testing.
  2. Verify operating-system detection. Open the system’s keyboard or USB-device settings and confirm that the computer sees the keypad. If it is absent, try another USB port, restart the computer and test the cable on a known-good port.
  3. Install the correct G-Core release. Use the software supplied for the GK100 or the manufacturer’s current support channel. Do not assume that software for another GameSir product will recognize this keypad.
  4. Choose a default mode. Start with one of the documented modes and test every key in a text field or the game’s control screen before assigning macros.
  5. Map controls by game. Put movement and frequently used actions where your hand naturally rests. Keep rarely used commands on keys that require a deliberate reach, reducing accidental presses during play.
  6. Create a profile. Save a separate profile for each game or genre. Include the game name in the profile label so you can identify it quickly when switching.
  7. Set lighting only after controls work. Lighting is cosmetic and can consume troubleshooting time. Confirm the mapping and profile behavior first, then apply the lighting effect you prefer.
  8. Test in a low-risk session. Enter a practice area or unranked match and check movement, modifiers, macros and profile switching. If a command repeats unexpectedly, remove the macro and test the key as a simple remap.

Choosing between the three categories

Choose the GK100 when

  • You want a dedicated left-hand keypad while your other hand remains on the mouse.
  • Your games benefit from a concentrated set of programmable commands.
  • You already own a separate typing keyboard or rarely type on the gaming device.
  • A sliding-rail palm rest and compact gaming focus matter more than a complete layout.
  • You are comfortable checking the condition and software support of an older wired product.

Choose a conventional mechanical keyboard when

  • One keyboard must cover documents, chat, browsing and games.
  • You need a full-size, tenkeyless or compact typing layout rather than a keypad.
  • You care most about choosing a particular switch feel, sound or spring weight.
  • You want broad compatibility without depending on a specialized one-handed profile.

Choose a Hall-effect gaming keyboard when

  • Adjustable actuation is a central requirement.
  • You want Rapid Trigger for games that benefit from movement-sensitive reset behavior.
  • You are interested in dual-action or analog-style input and have checked game support.
  • The exact model’s software documents the features, operating-system support and profile behavior you need.

Common buying and setup mistakes

Assuming “mechanical” means Hall-effect

Mechanical and Hall-effect describe different sensing approaches. The GK100’s mechanical designation does not imply magnetic sensing, adjustable actuation or Rapid Trigger. Look for those terms explicitly in a product specification.

Treating a keypad as a full keyboard

A one-handed layout can be excellent for games and inconvenient for everything else. Decide whether you are buying a companion controller or your only keyboard before comparing prices or switch specifications.

Trusting an old listing without checking condition

Ask whether the unit is new, used or refurbished; whether the USB cable and palm rest are included; whether keys register consistently; and whether the seller accepts returns. Because current stock and warranty terms are not established in the manual, these checks belong to the purchase itself.

Expecting software features to be universal

Remapping, macros, lighting, per-key actuation and Rapid Trigger all depend on the hardware and its software. A feature advertised for one model cannot be assumed on another model from the same category.

Ignoring game rules

Macros and multi-action assignments can conflict with a game’s terms of service or competitive rules. Use the simplest one-key remaps when you are unsure, and reserve automation for situations where the game explicitly permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom-line decision

The GameSir GK100 is best understood as a programmable, wired, one-handed mechanical gaming keypad with a sliding palm rest—not as a full-size mechanical keyboard and not as a Hall-effect controller. Its strengths are compact left-hand access, remappable profiles, macros and lighting through G-Core. Its limitations are incomplete typing coverage, older Windows/X1 targeting and the absence of documented adjustable actuation or Rapid Trigger.

Buy it when that focused keypad role matches your setup and the individual listing’s condition and compatibility check out. Buy a conventional mechanical keyboard when you need one complete keyboard for work and play. Choose a Hall-effect model only when its documented sensing and software features, rather than the label alone, solve a specific need.
