GameStop said on January 20, 2026, that it had patched a promotion loophole involving the Nintendo Switch 2. The company’s example described buying a Switch 2 for $414.99, then trading it in with a pre-owned game for $472.50 in store credit. That was a reported, short-lived promotion—not a current deal or a cash-profit guarantee.
What was the GameStop Switch 2 infinite money glitch?
According to GameStop’s January 20, 2026 statement, a customer could buy a Nintendo Switch 2 for $414.99 and immediately trade it in alongside a pre-owned game. The promotion then raised the console’s trade credit to $472.50. HotHardware reported the statement on January 21, and TechSpot reproduced the same statement in its January 22 report. The difference between the cited $414.99 purchase price and $472.50 credit is $57.51. That arithmetic is not a reported net profit: the example does not account for the cost of the pre-owned game, taxes, or other transaction terms. And the stated return was store credit, not an equivalent cash payout. “Infinite” referred to the possibility of repeating the transaction as described in coverage; it did not mean unlimited cash or an offer that remains available.
Did GameStop patch the Switch 2 trade-in glitch?
Yes. In the statement reproduced by HotHardware and TechSpot, GameStop said, “Effective immediately, the glitch has been patched.” The statement also joked that the promotion had allowed customers to “convert basic arithmetic into an endless revenue stream,” and said stores were not designed to function as “infinite money printers.” These are statements from GameStop, not quotes from a named individual.

Can you still trade in a Switch 2 at GameStop?
GameStop’s Switch 2 trade listing generated October 7, 2026 showed a separate, date-limited offer that expired at the end of that business day. It listed the following maximum values for that date:

Those were values on the dated listing, not evidence that the January loophole returned or that those amounts are available now. The same listing’s Pro bonus terms specified that the extra 10% in-store credit applied to games and accessories, not systems or consumer electronics. Check GameStop’s Switch 2 trade listing for the offer shown there; verify its date and terms before relying on any value.

What affects a GameStop trade-in offer?
GameStop says its trade program covers selected products at selected stores in the United States and Guam. Its terms allow the company to modify or suspend offers without notice, and trades are final. For the Switch 2 listing, full value required the item to be in working condition; condition, required components, and manager approval could affect the transaction. Offers could stop without notice. Review GameStop’s trade terms and contact the local store about its requirements before bringing in a console.
Because trade offers change, compare the cash-equivalent and store-credit amounts shown on the day you trade, check whether a membership value applies, and confirm what console components are required. The October 7 figures above have expired and should not be used as a current quote.
